Initial D is my pick for the best all-around car-themed anime, especially if you want mountain-road street racing and a memorable driver-and-car pairing. That’s a matter of taste, not an objective ranking: the best choice changes if you prefer motorsport drama, futuristic spectacle, or a story connected to the Initial D world.
Why Initial D is the best place to start
Takumi Fujiwara’s driving skill develops through tofu deliveries on mountain roads, and his car is the Toyota Sprinter Trueno AE86. That combination gives the series a clear car-culture identity while keeping the focus on a driver learning what he can do behind the wheel. CNN Brasil’s October 6, 2026 roundup puts Initial D first among five car-anime recommendations, but it does not present its ordering as a scored quality ranking: CNN Brasil’s roundup.

For a viewer seeking a series built around mountain-pass racing and a distinctive car-and-driver pairing, it is the most natural all-around recommendation. If you have already seen it—or those are not the parts of racing anime you enjoy—the alternatives below offer substantially different experiences.

#1 Best Overall
Choose MF Ghost for racing in the Initial D world
MF Ghost is the clearest follow-up if you want a newer story that continues the franchise’s world. The official synopsis imagines a near future in which autonomous driving is widespread, while public-road races called MFG draw a large audience: MF Ghost official introduction.
The official introduction says the manga ran in Young Magazine from 2017 through February 2025 and reports more than seven million copies in circulation. That figure is the manga’s cumulative circulation, not anime viewership or sales in a particular territory. The official site says the anime’s third season began broadcasting January 4, 2026. Its English news page announced production of a Final Season on March 26, 2026; that is an announcement, not a release date: MF Ghost official news index.
Choose by the kind of racing story you want
For Formula 4 and the effort behind a small team: Overtake!
Overtake! is the alternative when you want the team and the pressures around racing to matter alongside competition on the track. CNN Brasil describes it as a Formula 4 story that explores the effort and financial challenges facing a small racing team.
For a feature-length rush: Redline
Redline is the choice for a self-contained, high-energy science-fiction racing spectacle rather than an ongoing series. Its appeal, as described in the roundup, is the scale and futuristic nature of the race.
Rank #3
For a speculative racing category: Highspeed Etoile
Highspeed Etoile suits viewers curious about a racing world built around an imagined category. It offers a different angle from the familiar mountain roads, public-road championship, and Formula 4 setting of the other recommendations.
For highway racing: Wangan Midnight
Wangan Midnight is a reasonable watch-next suggestion if highway racing is what you are after. The available ranking source evaluates the manga, not the anime adaptation, so it does not establish that the anime is better than the other choices: 10i.jp’s car-manga ranking.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. So, which one is best for you?
Start with Initial D for mountain-pass street racing and an iconic car-and-driver pairing. Pick MF Ghost if franchise continuity matters most; Overtake! for Formula 4 and team pressures; Redline for a film-length burst of sci-fi spectacle; or Highspeed Etoile for a more speculative racing premise. There is no evidence-based universal winner here—the right choice depends on what you want from a car anime.
