Senior-Friendly SUVs: Safety, Comfort, and Easy Entry (2026 Buyer’s Guide)

The 2026 Subaru Forester is the best first SUV for many older drivers, but the Honda CR-V and larger Subaru Outback deserve direct comparison. Learn how to evaluate crash ratings, entry height, seating, visibility, controls, driver assistance, and mobility accessories before buying.

For most older drivers, the best place to start is the 2026 Subaru Forester, followed by a direct comparison with the 2026 Honda CR-V. Both are compact crossovers that combine a relatively manageable size with driver-assistance technology and seating positions that may be easier to use than a low sedan or a tall truck-based SUV. The 2026 Subaru Outback is worth adding when extra passenger or cargo room matters more than compact dimensions.

That is a shortlist, not a universal prescription. A senior-friendly SUV is the one that lets the intended driver enter without climbing or dropping into the seat, achieve a comfortable and safe driving position, see adequately in every direction, understand the controls and alerts, and handle the vehicle’s size in real parking and traffic situations. Those qualities cannot be determined reliably from vehicle height, an online ranking, or a safety award alone.

The three SUVs to test first

The following comparison is intended for shoppers in the United States considering 2026 model-year vehicles. Equipment, drivetrain availability, pricing, and safety-test coverage can vary by trim and market, so confirm the exact vehicle on the window sticker and the current ratings databases before buying.

SUV Best starting point for Why it belongs on the list What to watch during the test drive
2026 Subaru Forester Most shoppers seeking a balanced first choice Subaru says EyeSight driver-assistance technology is standard across the 2026 Forester line, and Subaru reports an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ award. Confirm the current IIHS listing and its conditions. Check rear-quarter visibility, touchscreen readability, alert behavior, and whether the seat-to-hip transition feels natural.
2026 Honda CR-V Drivers prioritizing compact-SUV access and flexible comfort features Consumer Reports access testing, summarized by AARP, identifies the CR-V as a strong small-SUV access choice. Honda lists a broad Honda Sensing suite, with several convenience and parking features available only on selected trims. Verify blind-spot monitoring, cross-traffic monitoring, parking sensors, seat memory, lumbar adjustment, and the power tailgate on the specific trim.
2026 Subaru Outback Buyers who need more passenger or cargo room It is classified by IIHS as a midsize SUV and has strong reported results in several updated crash tests. The larger body may make parking, reaching, and judging corners more difficult. Test it in the narrow spaces, slopes, and roads the owner actually uses.

Start with the Forester because it offers the broadest combination of access-oriented ergonomics and standard driver assistance in this shortlist. Then sit in and drive the CR-V without assuming that a higher trim is automatically a better fit. Choose the Outback when its additional space solves a real need, not simply because a larger SUV appears more substantial.

What makes an SUV senior-friendly?

Age itself does not determine which vehicle is appropriate. The relevant factors are usually changes in strength, balance, hip or knee range of motion, visual field, reaction time, reach, or tolerance for complicated controls. Two people of the same age can need very different vehicles. Conversely, a healthy older driver may prefer a vehicle with no special adaptations at all.

1. Crash protection comes before convenience

Use both NHTSA’s 5-Star Safety Ratings and the IIHS ratings database when available. NHTSA provides an overall star-rating system and identifies vehicles selected for model-year testing. IIHS generally supplies more granular information about crashworthiness, headlights, restraints, and crash-avoidance performance.

Always check the exact model year, body style, drivetrain, trim, headlight configuration, and optional safety equipment. A high-level award does not prove that every trim performs identically. A rating for one generation or model year should not be casually carried over to the next one.

Useful features for many older drivers include:

  • Automatic emergency braking or forward-collision mitigation, ideally with pedestrian detection.
  • Forward-collision and lane-departure warnings that are easy to understand.
  • Lane-departure prevention or lane-keeping assistance, if the driver is comfortable with the steering input.
  • Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
  • A clear rear-view camera, useful parking sensors, and, where available, a front or surround-view parking camera.
  • Adaptive cruise control, especially when its following behavior is predictable.
  • Automatic high beams and a driver-attention monitor when their alerts are not distracting.

These systems reduce workload in some situations; they do not replace attentive driving. They can also warn or intervene at moments the driver does not expect. A test drive should include deliberate exposure to each relevant warning, followed by a discussion with the salesperson about how to adjust or temporarily disable features that are confusing. Honda’s official CR-V trim comparison, for example, lists collision mitigation braking, road-departure mitigation, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, and other features whose availability varies by trim.

2. Easy entry means sitting down, not climbing up

The tallest SUV is not necessarily the easiest SUV to enter. A very high seat can require a step up, while a low seat can require a deep squat and a difficult rise. The useful target is a seat that is reasonably close to the driver’s hip height, paired with a wide door opening and a low, flat sill.

Look for:

  • A door that opens widely enough for the driver to turn the body rather than fold into the cabin.
  • A seat height that allows the driver to lower onto the cushion with limited knee and hip strain.
  • A low sill with little vertical difference between the sill and the floor.
  • Enough space to bring both legs into the cabin after the hips are seated.
  • A seat edge that supports the thighs without pressing painfully behind the knees.
  • A door pull and latch that can be reached without twisting or using the steering wheel for support.

European road-safety guidance identifies door-frame height, door-opening width, doorsill height, seat height, and the gap between the sill and floor as important design dimensions for older occupants. They are useful screening criteria, but they cannot predict every person’s experience because body size, leg strength, hip mobility, balance, and footwear change the result. European Commission road-safety guidance explains why those dimensions matter.

Consumer Reports evaluates access with people of different ages, shapes, and sizes and compares vehicles directly. Its access-oriented coverage, summarized by AARP, identifies car-based crossovers as generally easier to enter and exit than many low sedans or taller truck-based SUVs. It describes the CR-V as a strong small-SUV access choice and the Forester as especially easy for many people because its seat and ride heights are neither too low nor excessively high. Those are population-level observations, not medical assessments or guarantees of individual fit.

3. The seat and steering wheel must work together

A supportive seat is valuable only if it can be positioned without compromising control or airbag distance. Prefer a driver’s seat with height adjustment, lumbar adjustment, and at least six-way power adjustment when the intended driver benefits from repeatable positioning. A tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel is important because the driver should not have to sit too close to the wheel to reach it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set the seat first, then adjust the steering wheel, mirrors, and pedals. The driver should be able to press the pedals fully without stretching, keep a comfortable bend in the knees, see the instruments, and maintain a safe distance from the steering-wheel airbag. AAA’s older-driver guidance uses approximately 10 inches of chest-to-steering-wheel distance as a useful target where possible, while recognizing that pedal reach and individual body proportions still matter. Use the owner’s manual and professional fitting advice for unusual mobility needs; do not move so far away that pedal control becomes uncertain. AAA’s older-driver feature guide also discusses adjustable seats, low thresholds, supportive materials, adjustable pedals where available, and steering-wheel adjustment.

Check the seat belt after positioning. The shoulder portion should cross the shoulder and chest rather than the neck, and the lap portion should sit low across the pelvis. A seat that feels soft in the showroom may allow too much movement or place the belt poorly. Comfort matters, but restraint geometry and control of the vehicle matter more.

4. Visibility and controls should be understandable at a glance

Before judging a vehicle’s visibility, adjust the seat and mirrors correctly. Then inspect the view over the hood, through the side mirrors, around the rear pillars, and toward the rear corners. A large rear window does not eliminate blind spots, and a camera cannot show every object beside the vehicle.

Ask the intended driver to operate the climate controls, gear selector, lights, wipers, parking camera, and driver-assistance settings. Physical knobs and clearly labeled buttons may be easier to use than a touchscreen menu, especially when the driver is moving or wearing gloves. Check whether the gauge lettering and warning symbols can be read without leaning forward. A large screen is not automatically a readable screen if glare, small text, or complex menus are involved.

A programmable-height power tailgate can reduce reaching and lifting for some owners, but it addresses the rear hatch—not front-seat access. Honda lists a programmable-height power tailgate on selected 2026 CR-V trims, so verify its presence and operation on the vehicle being considered.

Model-by-model comparison

2026 Subaru Forester: the strongest overall starting point

The Forester is the most defensible first test drive for a broad senior-friendly SUV brief. Subaru states that EyeSight driver-assistance technology is standard across the 2026 Forester lineup. Subaru also reports that the 2026 Forester received an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ award. Because IIHS awards can depend on the tested configuration and equipment, verify the current listing, model-year scope, and conditions at Subaru’s 2026 Forester features page and the IIHS database before treating the award as a buying conclusion.

Its access advantage is primarily ergonomic. AARP’s summary of Consumer Reports testing describes the Forester’s seat height as close to many people’s hip level and its ride height as not excessively high. That can make it easier for many drivers to sit down and swing their legs into the cabin. It does not guarantee a good fit for someone with arthritis, weakness, limited balance, or a particular height.

During the test drive, pay special attention to:

  • Whether the driver’s hip moves onto the seat without a large sideways step.
  • How much effort is needed to close the door from the seated position.
  • Whether the steering wheel can be reached with the seat properly positioned and the chest comfortably away from the wheel.
  • How much the rear pillars obstruct the rear-quarter view.
  • Whether the touchscreen, climate controls, and instrument displays are readable.
  • Whether EyeSight warnings and interventions are clear rather than overwhelming.

2026 Honda CR-V: a strong access and comfort alternative

The CR-V deserves a direct comparison rather than being treated as a backup choice. AARP’s access summary identifies it as a top small-SUV access choice in Consumer Reports testing. Its compact dimensions can also be less intimidating in a garage or parking lot than a midsize SUV, although the actual seating position and blind spots still need to be tested by the intended driver.

Honda lists a broad Honda Sensing suite for the CR-V, including Collision Mitigation Braking, Road Departure Mitigation, adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, lane-keeping assistance, forward-collision warning, and lane-departure warning. Depending on trim, the equipment list also includes blind-spot information, cross-traffic monitoring, traffic-sign recognition, driver-attention monitoring, and front and rear parking sensors. Do not assume that a feature listed for the model is installed on every vehicle in dealer inventory.

Selected trims add a 10-way power driver’s seat with lumbar support, two-position seat memory, leather-trimmed seating, a programmable-height power tailgate, and hands-free tailgate access on the highest trim. Memory settings can be useful when spouses share a vehicle, but they do not compensate for an intrinsically poor seat fit. Verify the exact equipment on the window sticker and try the memory function repeatedly.

2026 Subaru Outback: more room, more vehicle to manage

The 2026 Outback is the logical addition for someone who regularly carries passengers, mobility equipment, or bulky cargo and finds a compact SUV restrictive. IIHS classifies the 2026 Outback as a midsize SUV. The IIHS listing reports Good results for the driver-side small-overlap front test, the updated moderate-overlap front test for the tested vehicle, and the updated side test, along with an Acceptable rear-passenger restraint result in the updated moderate-overlap evaluation. Review the complete 2026 Outback IIHS listing rather than reducing several category results to one label.

The trade-off is physical size. A larger cabin can make loading and passenger access easier, but a larger exterior can increase the difficulty of parking, judging corners, reaching the far side of the vehicle, and maneuvering on narrow roads. Test the Outback at the owner’s home, usual grocery store, medical facility, and parking garage if possible. If those locations feel stressful in a test drive, the extra space may not be worth the daily burden.

How to read safety claims without being misled

Do not use an old award as a substitute for a current rating. Model generations, crash-test protocols, headlights, restraints, and standard equipment can change. For example, the IIHS RAV4 page included in this research applies the displayed structural testing to 2019–2025 models and reports a Marginal rear-passenger head-protection result in the updated side test. That does not automatically make every RAV4 a poor choice; it illustrates why individual test categories and model-year scope matter. Review the relevant IIHS RAV4 page rather than relying on a generic statement that a RAV4 is safe.

NHTSA’s test-selection list has a similar limitation. Its 2025 list included vehicles such as the Forester and Tucson, while its 2026 list includes vehicles such as the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. Being selected for testing is not the same as receiving five stars, and the list is not a complete ranking of every SUV sold. Check the actual NHTSA result for the exact vehicle instead.

A repeatable test-drive process

Bring the person who will drive the SUV. If a spouse, parent, or caregiver will regularly ride in the front passenger seat, bring that person too. A salesperson’s description of easy access is no substitute for repeated transfers by the actual user.

  1. Enter and exit at least three times. Do it normally, without using the steering wheel as a support point. Repeat the test after the drive, when stiffness or fatigue may be more noticeable.
  2. Evaluate the seat height. The driver should be able to sit down onto the seat without a deep squat, but should not need to climb onto it. Check whether the knees and hips tolerate the movement.
  3. Inspect the sill and floor. Look for a low, flat threshold that does not require a large sideways step or high leg lift. Check whether both legs can be brought in without twisting sharply.
  4. Close the door from the seated position. The driver should not need to lean far, pull hard, or use the steering wheel for leverage.
  5. Set the driving position correctly. Adjust the seat, steering wheel, mirrors, and pedals before judging comfort or visibility. Confirm full pedal access, a clear instrument view, and adequate space between the chest and steering wheel.
  6. Check the belt. Confirm that the shoulder belt crosses the shoulder and chest and that the lap belt sits low across the pelvis. Test the buckle from the normal seated position.
  7. Test blind spots and cameras. Look over the shoulder, through the rear-quarter windows, and in the mirrors. Try the rear camera, parking sensors, and any available front or surround-view system in a real parking space.
  8. Drive familiar roads. Include rough pavement, hills, highway ramps, low-speed traffic, and a parking lot. Listen for whether alerts are understandable over road noise and determine whether the vehicle’s steering or braking interventions feel predictable.
  9. Operate every important control. Try the climate system, lights, wipers, gear selector, cruise control, infotainment, driver-assistance settings, and liftgate. If the driver cannot explain how to repeat a basic task, the interface may be too complicated.
  10. Test both front seats and the second row when relevant. A vehicle that works for the driver may still be difficult for a spouse or passenger who has more limited mobility.

AAA’s older-driver advice similarly emphasizes trying a vehicle personally, checking blind spots, evaluating entry and exit, considering lift-over height, and confirming that the driver can reach the pedals and steering wheel without compromising airbag distance. Its broader guide to cars for older drivers is useful to review before visiting dealerships.

What to do when the test drive exposes a problem

  • Pain or instability during entry: Try a different seat height or another vehicle rather than assuming the driver will adapt. If the driver must pull on the steering wheel or door frame, the vehicle is not an easy transfer for that person.
  • The seat fits, but the pedals do not: Do not move too close to the steering wheel just to reach the pedals. Try the available seat and steering-wheel adjustments, and consider professional vehicle fitting if the problem persists.
  • The vehicle feels too large in parking spaces: Compare the CR-V or Forester before moving up to the Outback. Extra cargo room is useful only if the driver can confidently position the vehicle.
  • Driver-assistance alerts feel confusing: Have the salesperson demonstrate the warning, intervention, and settings. A feature that creates surprise or distraction may add workload rather than reduce it.
  • The front seat works but passenger transfers do not: Test the passenger side separately. If mobility is substantially limited, obtain a vehicle-transfer assessment or occupational-therapy mobility-fitting assessment instead of relying only on online SUV rankings.

Mobility accessories: useful in narrow circumstances, not substitutes for fit

A mobility accessory can make a suitable vehicle easier to use, but it cannot turn a poor vehicle fit into a safe one. Discuss any accessory with the driver’s clinician or mobility specialist when balance, weakness, or a significant range-of-motion limitation is involved.

car door assist handles

A car door assist handle, sometimes called a car cane, fits into a vehicle door latch and provides a temporary handhold during a transfer. The IFOPA Ability Toolbox describes this type of tool as lightweight and storable in a vehicle but does not endorse a particular product. Confirm that the handle is compatible with the specific latch and use it exactly as directed. An incompatible or poorly positioned handle can create a fall risk or damage the vehicle. It should not be used as permission to pull hard on a door or to support more weight than the device is designed to handle.

Swivel cushions

An auto swivel seat cushion may help a passenger rotate the hips and legs during entry and exit. Stander describes its Auto Swivel Seat Cushion as a portable cushion with a non-slip base intended to make vehicle transfers easier. It is a transfer aid, not a replacement for a correctly fitted seat belt or a professional assessment. Check that it stays stable on the seat and does not interfere with the belt buckle, seat controls, side airbag area, or the person’s ability to sit fully back.

Be cautious with ordinary seat cushions

An automotive seat cushion should be considered only for a carefully assessed comfort or positioning need. Adding a cushion can change hip height, belt geometry, head-restraint position, pedal reach, and distance from the steering wheel or airbag. NHTSA’s older-driver materials discuss how cushions may affect belt fit. A thicker cushion is not automatically safer or more comfortable, and a driver should not use one unless it remains secure and preserves proper restraint and control geometry.

Which SUV should you choose?

Choose the 2026 Subaru Forester first if you want the broadest starting point for easy entry, manageable size, and standard driver-assistance technology. Choose the 2026 Honda CR-V if its access, seat shape, controls, and available comfort features suit the driver better; compare trims carefully because equipment varies. Choose the 2026 Subaru Outback when passenger or cargo needs justify a midsize vehicle and the driver remains comfortable maneuvering its larger body.

Before signing, repeat the entry-and-exit test, confirm the exact safety equipment and model-year ratings, and drive the vehicle in the environments that matter most. The right SUV is not the one with the highest seat or the longest feature list. It is the one the intended driver can enter, position, see from, understand, and control consistently.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a taller SUV automatically easier for an older driver to enter?

No. A very tall vehicle may require a step up, while a low vehicle may require a painful squat. Seat height near the driver’s hip, a wide door opening, and a low, flat sill are usually more useful than maximum ground clearance. The intended driver must try the vehicle personally.

Which senior-friendly SUV should I test first?

For a broad 2026-model-year starting point, test the 2026 Subaru Forester first, then compare it directly with the 2026 Honda CR-V. The Forester has standard EyeSight according to Subaru and is described in Consumer Reports access coverage as easy for many people to enter. Individual fit can still favor the CR-V or another vehicle.

Do driver-assistance features make an SUV safe for an older driver?

They can reduce workload in some situations, but they do not replace attentive driving. Automatic braking, blind-spot monitoring, cameras, parking sensors, and adaptive cruise control should be tested for understandable warnings and predictable interventions. Verify which features are installed on the exact trim.

Is the Subaru Outback a better choice because it has more room?

Only if the additional room solves a real passenger or cargo need. The 2026 Outback is a midsize SUV, so its larger body may be more difficult to park, maneuver, or judge in tight spaces than a Forester or CR-V. Test it in the owner’s normal parking and driving environments.

What if an older adult has major balance or mobility limitations?

Do not rely solely on online SUV rankings. Arrange an occupational-therapy or professional vehicle-transfer assessment. A compatible assist handle or swivel cushion may help in a suitable vehicle, but accessories can affect stability, seat-belt fit, pedal reach, head-restraint position, and airbag distance.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Begin with the 2026 Subaru Forester, compare it carefully with the 2026 Honda CR-V, and consider the 2026 Subaru Outback only when its extra room is worth the larger footprint. Verify exact-year, exact-trim safety information and let the intended driver perform repeated transfers and a realistic test drive. Easy entry and safe comfort are personal fit questions—not conclusions that can be made from an SUV’s height or badge.
