There is no universal winner. The privacy policies reviewed do not provide a common measurement of how many bytes, recordings, or data points each service collects. A robotaxi can process the same account, device, location, and trip information as an app-based ride, while also describing in-cabin video or vehicle analytics. A separate autonomous-driving program may collect exterior camera, radar, lidar, location, and time data without linking every image to a passenger. The fair comparison is dataset by dataset: what is collected, whether it is tied to your account, why it is used, who receives it, how long it is kept, and what choices you have.
That distinction matters more than simply counting privacy-policy bullet points. “More personal data” could mean more information about your identity and journeys, more sensor coverage of the world around a vehicle, or more data linked directly to you. Those are different questions.

What the comparison actually measures
A rideshare app and a self-driving taxi both need information to match a rider with a vehicle, navigate to a pickup point, process payment, handle support, and document a trip. Both may therefore process account details, device information, precise location, and trip history.

What a robotaxi service can know about a rider
Waymo: account, trip, cabin, and inferred-destination data
Waymo’s Web Privacy Policy, marked in the cited material as last updated September 17, 2026, lists several classes of information. They include contact and account details, preferred trip locations, usage and device information, communications, and geolocation. The location examples are unusually concrete: pickup and drop-off points and route details.
The same policy lists in-vehicle video and inferences, including frequently visited destinations. That means the policy covers both information supplied through the app and information generated by the vehicle or derived from a rider’s activity. It does not establish that every trip is continuously recorded in the cabin, nor that every listed category is collected in every market or product configuration. The policy’s scope and available controls can vary by location and product.
For retention, Waymo says account-associated details such as name, email, and trip history are kept while an account remains active. It also describes additional retention for legitimate legal and business purposes. Those statements concern the information and purposes covered by the policy; they should not be read as one universal retention period for every video, sensor record, or inference.
The policy discusses disclosures to service providers and state-law “sale” or “sharing” terminology for certain advertising disclosures. Those legal terms have specific meanings under particular state laws. They do not by themselves prove that a trip was sold to an advertiser, and the applicable rights and controls depend on the rider’s location and product.

Waymo’s statement about vehicle sensors
In an August 24, 2026 company post, Waymo states: “We do not sell personal information collected by our vehicles’ cameras and other sensors.” The statement is the company’s characterization of its practice, not an independent measurement of all collection, use, retention, or disclosure. The post directs readers to the service privacy policy for the fuller description: Setting the Global Standard for Privacy in Autonomous Mobility.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Tesla Robotaxi: account-linked location and optional analytics
Tesla’s Robotaxi Privacy Notice says location from the mobile device and Robotaxi is processed during a trip and linked to the account. The notice explains that location services route the vehicle and show the rider the trip.
Depending on the rider’s selection, analytics may include trip details, route, vehicle performance, and short video clips or images. “Depending on selection” is important: the notice does not support assuming that all analytics or clips are enabled for every ride. A rider comparing two products should check the active setting and the current notice rather than treating optional collection as automatic.
What rideshare apps can know about a trip
Lyft: routine ride data plus conditional disclosure
Lyft’s Privacy Policy says that, in specified situations, it may share some or all ride details with another party that requested or paid for a ride. The examples include business or family profiles, passes, subsidized programs, and rides requested or paid for by another party.
The policy’s examples of potentially shared details include rider and driver information, date and time, charge, region, pickup and drop-off location, feedback, and incident information. This is a conditional disclosure. It does not mean every Lyft trip is automatically disclosed to an employer, family member, program administrator, or payer. The relevant question is who arranged or funded the ride and which arrangement applies to that trip.
For an ordinary app ride, the privacy exposure is therefore concentrated in account, device, precise location, route, payment, communications, support, and trip records. A rideshare policy may describe many of those categories even when the vehicle itself is not collecting passenger video. Conversely, the absence of an in-cabin category in the cited Lyft material does not prove that no other technology or partner could process imagery in every circumstance; it only limits what can be concluded from the policy details cited here.

Exterior sensors are not the same as passenger data
Uber’s roadway-data notice is a separate program
Uber’s Road Data Collection Privacy Hub describes outward-facing video from vehicles operating on public roads for research and development of safe self-driving models. The notice says the vehicles collect camera footage together with radar, lidar, location, and time information, with the footage focused on roadway scenarios.
That notice explicitly says it does not describe the data collected when someone requests or receives a ride or delivery, including an autonomous ride. It is therefore not valid to take Uber’s road-sensor description and label it the standard data collection for every passenger trip.
Uber says it shares the roadway data with autonomous-development partners. It also says images are not used to identify or profile people present in captured surroundings. The notice describes retention only for as long as necessary for its stated purposes or as required by law. These are scoped statements about that road-data program, not a blanket promise about all Uber products or all autonomous vehicles.
Could a camera still capture you?
Yes, an exterior sensor operating in a public place can record people, buildings, traffic signs, or other objects in its field of view. Whether that information is personal data, whether it is linked to a rider, and whether it is used to identify someone are separate questions. Uber’s notice says its roadway images are not used to identify or profile people in captured surroundings; it does not say that no person can ever appear in a frame.
The same distinction applies to any robotaxi service: a vehicle may collect environmental information needed to operate or improve autonomy even when the record is not attached to the passenger’s account. Counting those frames as if they were all personal information about the rider would overstate the rider-specific collection.
Do robotaxis record passengers?
The answer depends on the service and setting. Waymo’s policy lists in-vehicle video, so cabin imagery is a disclosed category for that service. The policy does not say every passenger is recorded continuously or that every market uses identical equipment and settings. Tesla’s notice says selected analytics may include short video clips or images, which means clips should not be assumed for every ride or every account.

These disclosures are different from outward-facing road footage. Cabin video can be directly about riders and their conversations, movements, or belongings. Exterior imagery is generally about the road environment and may incidentally include people nearby. Before booking, read the service-specific notice, look for recording or analytics controls in the app, and check whether the product offered in your jurisdiction has different terms.
Are self-driving cars collecting data about you?
They can, in several ways:
- As a rider: the service can process your account details, device activity, pickup and drop-off locations, route, communications, and trip history.
- As a passenger in the cabin: a service policy may list in-vehicle video or optional clips and images.
- As a person near the vehicle: outward-facing sensors can capture a scene that includes you, even if you are not a customer.
- Through inference: a provider may derive information such as frequently visited destinations from observed trips.
Only the first two categories are naturally tied to a rider account. The third may be environmental data, and the fourth is derived information. A precise answer therefore requires asking what data set is involved and whether it is linked to an identifiable person.
How to compare two services without a misleading data score
Use the following sequence for the specific provider, app version, vehicle, and jurisdiction you are considering:
- List account and device fields. Check whether the service names contact details, account identifiers, device information, communications, payment details, or usage activity.
- Map the trip record. Look for pickup, drop-off, route, date, time, destination history, and any preferred-location feature. Note whether the policy says these fields are linked to your account.
- Separate cabin from exterior collection. Treat in-vehicle video, microphones, or clips as a different category from cameras, radar, and lidar aimed at the road.
- Check optional settings. A notice that says “depending on selection” does not establish that the feature is active for every rider. Record which analytics, recording, or location permissions you actually enabled.
- Identify purposes. Distinguish providing the ride and routing from safety, support, fraud prevention, advertising, analytics, and autonomous-driving research.
- Identify recipients. Look for service providers, business or family-profile administrators, program sponsors, autonomous-development partners, and advertising disclosures. Confirm which recipient applies to your arrangement.
- Read retention and deletion language. Record separate terms for account records, trip history, video, sensor data, and legal holds. “While the account is active” is not the same as a fixed number of days.
- Check rights and controls for your location. Look for access, correction, deletion, objection, opt-out, and location or device-permission controls. The available mechanism may differ by state or country and by product.
This method avoids treating a long policy as proof of greater collection. A provider can list many categories because it operates several products, while another can describe fewer categories but still process substantial data under broad terms.

Retention is not one number
Waymo’s statement about keeping account-associated information while an account remains active applies to examples such as name, email, and trip history, with additional legal and business retention described. Uber’s roadway notice uses a purpose-based standard: recordings remain only as long as necessary for the stated purposes or as required by law. Those are not directly comparable datasets, so one cannot conclude that one service keeps “more” simply because its policy uses different wording.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Sharing can be conditional
Lyft’s examples show why the ride arrangement matters. A ride paid for or requested by another party may expose specified details to that party, while a personally requested ride may not trigger the same disclosure. Similarly, Waymo’s discussion of state-law advertising “sale” or “sharing” terms is a legal classification that can vary by jurisdiction and does not mean every trip is transferred to an advertiser.

Account linkage determines sensitivity
A route tied to your name and email is more readily attributable to you than an unlinked road scene collected for model development. Tesla expressly describes Robotaxi and mobile-device location as linked to the account. Uber’s road-data notice is framed around roadway scenarios and does not describe a rider-account link for each image. Always ask whether the provider can connect the record to your account, not merely whether a sensor or app can collect it.
Practical privacy steps for riders
- Use the least location access that still works. Review the app’s device permission and whether precise location is needed only while requesting or taking a trip.
- Inspect optional analytics. If the service offers choices about clips, images, performance analytics, or diagnostics, confirm the current selection before riding.
- Separate profiles when appropriate. A business, family, pass, or subsidized arrangement can create a different sharing path from a personally paid ride.
- Limit account history where the provider allows it. Use the service’s access or deletion process for records you no longer need, while recognizing that legal, safety, fraud, or business obligations may require some retention.
- Ask support about a specific trip. When a policy is broad, request clarification about whether a particular ride involved cabin video, optional clips, or disclosure to a payer.
- Recheck before publication or booking. Privacy notices and product availability can change, and local law can add rights or alter the meaning of “sale” and “sharing.”
Which option is more private for different riders?
If your concern is account-linked trip history
Compare the account, location, route, and retention sections first. Both robotaxi and rideshare services can maintain these records. Waymo explicitly lists trip history and frequent-destination inferences, Tesla links Robotaxi location to the account, and Lyft describes ride details that may be shared in specified arrangements. The service with fewer disclosed linked fields is not automatically collecting less; its policy may simply describe the categories differently.
If your concern is passenger recording
Focus on the cabin-data section rather than the vehicle’s exterior sensors. Waymo lists in-vehicle video. Tesla describes short clips or images only depending on selection. The cited Lyft details describe ride information and conditional sharing, not a comparable cabin-video category. Verify the current product-specific notice and settings before assuming that a ride is or is not recorded.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If your concern is being captured near the road
Exterior autonomous-development programs are the relevant category. Uber’s notice describes camera, radar, lidar, location, and time data from public-road vehicles and says the images are not used to identify or profile people in captured surroundings. That program is distinct from data collected when a customer requests or receives a ride.
If your concern is employer, family, or payer visibility
Check who requested or paid for the ride. Lyft’s policy makes disclosure of specified ride details conditional on arrangements such as business or family profiles, passes, subsidized programs, or another party’s request or payment. Do not assume that every trip has the same audience.
Bottom line: no policy-based winner
Robotaxis may disclose a broader mix of rider-service and vehicle information, including in-cabin video, optional clips, route and performance analytics, or environmental sensor data. Rideshare apps clearly process account, device, location, and trip information and can conditionally share ride details with another party. But the reviewed policies do not measure collection volume on a common scale.
The defensible answer is therefore conditional: a robotaxi may collect more types of data, especially vehicle and cabin data, while a rideshare app may collect extensive account-linked trip information without operating the same sensor systems. To decide which is more private for you, compare the specific service and jurisdiction across account linkage, location and trip history, cabin versus exterior capture, purpose, recipients, retention, and available controls. Check the live policy immediately before riding because these terms and features can change.
