The move ended production at that U.S. line; it did not mean Segway stopped making every product or that the company itself closed.
What Segway stopped making—and when
The July 15, 2020 end date applied to the PT production line at Segway’s Bedford facility. Segway New Zealand reported in June 2020 that the Bedford plant had manufactured PTs for U.S. and European Union markets since 2002, and that approximately 140,000 PTs had been produced there. That approximate total is a historical production figure, not a count of PTs still in use.
Reuters reported that the same production changes also ended production of the SE-3 Patroller and Segway Robotics Mobility Platform. The announcement concerned these products and the Bedford operation—not the end of the Segway brand or all Segway products.
Why Segway gave for the decision
Contemporary reporting described the decision as an economic one: the PT contributed a relatively small share of company revenue, while Segway shifted attention toward newer products. The reported revenue figure differs slightly by outlet. The Washington Post said Segway President Judy Cai put the PT at 1.5% of company revenue in the prior year; Reuters reported her figure as less than 1.5%. Both figures were attributed to Cai, and the reports do not justify treating them as identical.

Cai also addressed the pandemic’s role. The Washington Post quoted her: “This decision was not made lightly, and while the current global pandemic did impact sales and production, it was not a deciding factor in our decision.”
Reuters reported 21 job cuts in connection with the production changes.

Why the end of Bedford production was not a worldwide production timeline
Segway New Zealand’s June 2020 account described a different arrangement for its market: it said the New Zealand business had sourced PTs from a production line in China since 2018 and expected to continue doing so at that time. That dated regional account shows why the Bedford announcement should not be expanded into a claim that PT production ended everywhere on July 15, 2020. It does not establish what happened to that arrangement afterward.

In 2020, Segway New Zealand said Bedford would continue parts and service for its installed base and that EU service would be handled through Munich. Those were plans reported at the time, not confirmation of current stock or service availability in any particular country.

Segway’s PT warranty document identifies batteries and other replacement components as PT product categories and directed warranty customers to an authorized Segway dealer or company support. Segway’s current general support site advertises repair and spare-parts resources, but those general offerings do not establish PT-specific compatibility, inventory, warranty coverage, or authorized service in a given region.
If you are looking for a Segway PT replacement battery or another component, check the exact PT model and battery configuration, confirm the part’s suitability with the seller or a qualified service provider, and verify current availability and applicable service terms before buying. A general Segway spare-parts listing is not, by itself, proof that a part fits a PT.
