The first series-produced Neue Klasse model combines lower-carbon battery cells, secondary materials and changes across production and the vehicle lifecycle. Those figures are BMW’s published claims—not proof that the car is 34% better on every environmental measure.
What BMW means by “more sustainable”
The headline number is a product carbon footprint: BMW says the iX3 50 xDrive’s footprint across a modeled 200,000 km is 34% lower than its predecessor’s. That is a lifecycle comparison, not a claim about tailpipe emissions alone or a direct measure of every environmental impact. BMW’s launch announcement describes the reduction as “more than 30 per cent”; the company’s sustainability release gives the 34% figure. The result depends on the comparison boundary, vehicle lifetime, electricity assumptions and model version. It should not be read as a universal result for every iX3, market or driver. BMW says its vehicle-specific Vehicle Footprint is publicly available and TÜV-verified; that is the place to examine the detailed boundary and methodology.
How the iX3 reduces its footprint
Lower-carbon Gen6 battery cells
BMW says Gen6 cells for the iX3’s high-voltage battery contain 50% secondary cobalt, lithium and nickel. The company also says renewable electricity is used in anode, cathode and cell production. Against the Gen5 cells used in the previous model, BMW reports 42% lower CO₂e per watt-hour. This is a cell-level comparison, distinct from the 34% whole-vehicle lifecycle figure.

Secondary materials in selected components
BMW says around one-third of the vehicle is made from secondary materials. Its examples include 30% recycled maritime plastic in the engine-compartment cover and front storage compartment, 80% secondary aluminum in wheel carriers and swivel bearings, and 70% secondary aluminum in cast wheels. These are reported shares for named parts, not a statement that those percentages apply to the vehicle as a whole.
Changes beyond the materials list
The company attributes the lifecycle reduction to measures spanning the supply chain, production, use and end-of-life design, rather than to recycled content alone. Its August 2025 announcement presents technical and material details in the context of production start and identifies them as provisional for that context; the figures are BMW’s reported specifications, not independent measurements of real-world impact.

When does the electric version’s footprint become lower?
Manufacturing an EV generally begins with an emissions burden associated in part with its battery, while driving it avoids tailpipe emissions and adds emissions from electricity generation. BMW’s modeled comparison with a comparable combustion vehicle puts the iX3 50 xDrive’s lower-footprint point at about 21,500 km on the European electricity mix, or about 17,500 km when charged with renewable electricity. These are BMW’s 2025 estimates under those electricity assumptions—not universal break-even distances. A different grid, lifetime mileage or vehicle comparison can change the result.

- They compare specified things: the 34% figure compares lifecycle product footprints with the previous iX3 over 200,000 km; the break-even estimates compare with a comparable combustion vehicle under stated electricity conditions.
- They cover more than driving: BMW’s case includes measures in materials, battery-cell production, the supply chain, vehicle production, use and end-of-life design.
- They are not a blanket environmental ranking: a lower product carbon footprint does not by itself establish lower impacts for every pollutant, resource, location or ownership scenario.
- They are company figures: BMW says its Vehicle Footprint is TÜV-verified and publicly accessible, but the summary claims should still be attributed to BMW rather than presented as independent real-world testing.
