Seattle is replacing public DC fast chargers with models that include protective cable sheaths and cable-cut alarms, and improved sites are set to include cameras. At the same time, Seattle City Light continues to expand public charging for drivers who cannot charge at home. The city has not published results showing whether the new security features reduce theft or charger downtime.

What Seattle is doing about charging cable theft

Seattle City Light’s September 2026 update says fast-charger replacement projects are underway across its service area. The utility is selecting ChargePoint models site by site, based on electrical capacity, space constraints and the condition of existing infrastructure. The replacement equipment is designed to add protection and improve charging access, but the stated features should not be mistaken for proven theft deterrents.

  • Protective cable sheaths and cable-cut alarms: listed features of replacement fast chargers.
  • Security cameras: planned for improved sites.
  • Paired stations: replacement chargers will be electrically paired.
  • More payment and vehicle options: the chargers are expected to support tap-to-pay, ChargePoint’s app and payment system, and plug-and-charge for capable vehicles.
  • Connector support: improved designs are intended to fit more vehicle and charge-port configurations. City Light says it will continue supporting CHAdeMO where possible while supplies remain available.

Some locations will receive Level 2 chargers as additions or replacements. City Light’s update said new fast chargers were available at Alaska Junction, Shoreline, South Service Center, South Park and North Beacon Hill. Other projects were at design, permitting, procurement, contracting or construction stages. Check the live City Light replacement-project page for a particular station’s current status; construction and charger availability can change.

The city has not reported measured post-installation theft rates or downtime for the new sheaths, alarms or cameras. Their effectiveness therefore remains unestablished.

Why charging access still matters

Public charging is essential for more than drivers making longer trips. Seattle City Light’s curbside Level 2 pilot is intended for residents who cannot charge at home because they lack off-street parking. Its public charging program frames curbside and fast charging as part of an equitable network, particularly in areas without private charging investment.

As of June 2025, City Light reported 58 public curbside Level 2 chargers at 31 locations. Seattle’s 2023 Transportation Electrification Blueprint report said the city reviewed more than 1,800 resident requests before launching 31 curbside locations. These figures describe different reporting points and should not be read as a current count of every charger or location.

Level 2 curbside Residential-neighborhood charging for drivers who may not have a home charging option. City Light’s pilot is intended to bring charging to curbside locations; the program page reported 58 chargers at 31 locations as of June 2025.
DC fast charging Faster public charging at stations across City Light’s service area. Replacement sites are selected according to local electrical capacity, space and infrastructure. Connector options vary; City Light says it will support CHAdeMO where possible while supplies remain available.

How much demand is the network serving?

Seattle’s 2023 Transportation Electrification Blueprint report, published by the Seattle Office of Sustainability and Environment in 2024, recorded more than 57,000 kWh and 2,400 sessions at City Light-operated public stations in December 2023. It also reported that public charging used approximately 30% more power on average in the final six months of 2023 than in the same period of 2022. These are dated utilization figures, not current monthly totals.

Tesla Model 3/Y/Cybertruck Charger Lock for J1772 Adapter (Black)[2PACK]

  • Stops malicious and unwanted disconnects
  • Limited lifetime warranty

The same report said the city considered more than 1,800 resident requests when selecting 31 curbside locations. That demand context helps explain why simply delaying or removing public charging would not address the needs of residents without home charging. What is known about Seattle’s cable thefts?

Published theft figures are snapshots from 2024, not current totals. GeekWire reported on August 7, 2024, that Seattle City Light had lost more than 80 cables from its 21 fast-charging stations since March 2022. The same report said Electrify America and EVgo had reported more than 100 Seattle cable thefts combined in the preceding 12 months.

In a June 11, 2024 report, the Associated Press said Seattle police had recorded seven cable-theft cases in 2024 through the date of the story—the same number recorded for all of 2023. That is a historical police count, not a current incident tally. The AP described copper recovery as a likely motive, while noting that the recoverable copper in a cable is limited and difficult to extract.

GeekWire’s 2024 account also described the repair burden at that time: repairs cost $2,000 or more per charger, scheduling could take a few days to a week, and replacement cables could take up to six months to arrive. Those figures are historical and should not be treated as current costs or repair timelines. The report said metal shielding then covered about 40% of a cable, leaving most of it exposed.

Washington’s Senate bill report summarized public testimony describing repeated charger vandalism and citing a claim that as many as 6% of Seattle EV chargers had been vandalized. That percentage was a claim in testimony, not an independently verified citywide measurement. The report describes a committee process and recommendations, but the cited material does not establish whether those recommendations have since been implemented. Read the Washington Senate bill report.

Why a stolen cable can disrupt more than one driver

When a cable is cut, the affected charger—or an entire station—may be unusable until repairs are completed. Drivers then have to locate another working charger, which can disrupt commutes and essential trips. In the AP’s 2024 coverage, Electrify America operations vice president Anthony Lambkin described the impact of a whole station being offline on customers travelling to work, school and medical appointments.

The practical effect depends on how many working chargers remain nearby and how quickly the operator can restore the damaged equipment. Seattle’s published materials do not provide current, comparable uptime or replacement-time results for the new security features.

Where can I find a working fast charger?

Station availability changes, so use current operator information rather than relying on an older list of locations. For City Light replacement-project status, consult the utility’s project update. For charging availability or a technical problem at a ChargePoint station, City Light’s FAQ directs drivers to the ChargePoint app or the support number printed on the charger. Check the station listing before travelling, particularly if the trip depends on a single fast-charging stop.

Measuring 19.7" × 9.8" × 23.6", it includes mounting hardware and keys for securing and accessing the enclosure.

How to report a vandalized charger

  1. Report theft or vandalism to local law enforcement immediately. Include the station name and approximate address.
  2. Notify Seattle City Light. The utility’s FAQ says to contact it by email or phone; use the current contact details on its charging FAQ.
  3. For a technical issue, use the ChargePoint app or the support number on the charger.

For a non-City Light station, contact the charging network identified on the equipment or in its app. Do not assume every public charger in Seattle is operated by the city.

How Seattle’s expansion policy fits in

In August 2023, Seattle City Council said legislation had authorized City Light to lease private property for public chargers and private companies to lease City Light property for charging installations. The council forecast that this authority could enable 10–20 additional stations over the following two years. That was a 2023 estimate, not confirmation that those stations were built. See the council’s announcement.

Expanding locations and protecting equipment address related but different problems: new access does not prevent outages, while security measures do not by themselves add charging capacity. The relevant measure of progress will include whether stations remain available and how quickly damaged equipment is restored, alongside the network’s reach.
