Seattle-Area EV Drivers: How to Find a Working Fast Charger Amid Cable Theft

Seattle’s 2024 cable-theft reports document serious disruption, but they are not a current outage count. Check Seattle City Light’s live station status before driving.

If a public fast-charging site is offline because its cable was stolen, check Seattle City Light’s public charging status page immediately before setting out, then choose an operating station that fits your route and vehicle. The “epidemic” in the original headline was a characterization by Seattle EV Association president Jay Donnaway in a July 2024 report—not an official current theft rate. The documented theft totals below describe 2023–24; Seattle City Light’s separate September 2026 update reports replacement progress at five sites.

Where to check for a working Seattle-area fast charger

Seattle City Light publishes status information for its public network, which includes DC fast chargers and curbside Level 2 chargers. Check the live station status page just before leaving: a station’s availability can change, and a listing does not guarantee that a charger will still be free and working when you arrive.

When choosing an alternative, verify the connector and charging level your vehicle can use, whether the station is currently operational, and whether the detour works with your route. If the nearest fast charger is unavailable, an operating DC fast charger farther away may be more suitable than a slower Level 2 option when you need a quick stop.

What the cable-theft figures do—and do not—show

In a July 1, 2024 report, GeekWire said at least 100 EV charging cables had been stolen across Seattle in the preceding 12 months. Electrify America told GeekWire that 93 cables had been cut in Washington since July 2023; the Georgetown Bank of America site had been hit nine times, with 51 cables taken, while University Village had reported 22 stolen cables. These are historical figures from that reporting period, not a current 2026 count. GeekWire’s report described drivers scrambling to find alternatives, including one person who said she drove 30 miles north to Everett to find a working station. That is an individual example, not a survey result.

The Associated Press reported a different set of figures in June 2024: Seattle police had recorded seven cable-theft cases through that report, matching the total for all of 2023. Electrify America told AP it had recorded 129 cable cuts nationwide through May 2024, four more than during all of 2023. Those figures have different geographic scopes and definitions from GeekWire’s cable tally, so they should not be added together or treated as a single measure of Seattle outages. The AP report also quoted Electrify America’s vice president of operations, Anthony Lambkin, saying an offline station affects people’s ability to get to work, school and medical appointments.

Seattle EV Association president Jay Donnaway told GeekWire that cable theft had been an issue locally for more than a decade and had reached “epidemic proportions” in the preceding couple of years. The phrase is his description of the period, not an official rate. Neither those 2024 reports nor the later replacement update establishes a current Seattle-wide theft total or a verified current count of offline fast chargers.

Seattle City Light’s replacement progress

In its September 2026 project update, Seattle City Light said new fast chargers were available at five locations: Alaska Junction, Shoreline, South Service Center, South Park and North Beacon Hill. The agency said the replacement equipment includes protective cable sheaths and cable-cut alarms intended to reduce vandalism-related outages and alert or deter further damage. Those measures are not a guarantee against theft, and the update does not establish their effectiveness. Seattle City Light’s replacement project page also describes site-specific equipment choices based on electrical capacity, space constraints and the condition of existing infrastructure; other projects may be at earlier stages.

Why cable theft disrupts charging

News reports have linked theft to the resale value of copper in charging cables, even though the cables contain relatively little copper and are expensive to replace. A cut or missing cable can take a fast-charging unit—or an entire station—out of service until repairs are made. GeekWire reported that Seattle police assigned theft reports to its Major Crimes Task Force because of their frequency, high dollar amount and likelihood of repeated, targeted crimes. A police spokesperson told the outlet, “Preventing further thefts is difficult.”

Operators have reported security responses including cameras, improved station lighting and outreach to recycling centers. These are documented steps, not evidence that any one measure has prevented theft. Washington’s Senate Bill Report for ESB 5746 summarized testimony that as many as 6 percent of Seattle EV chargers had been vandalized and that Washington had more than 2,600 charging stations. Those numbers are attributed to testimony summarized in the report, not to an audited statewide inventory. The report also cited a U.S. Department of Transportation figure of 330 program-eligible Washington stations temporarily unavailable because of vandalism or mechanical issues at the time of a federal award. That count combines causes and applies to a defined group of stations at a particular time; it is not a current Seattle outage count. The Senate Bill Report describes a proposed advisory process addressing property crime affecting EV charging infrastructure.

Can a portable charging cable solve the problem?

A portable EVSE may help only if your vehicle is compatible and you have access to an appropriate outlet. It can support slower Level 1 or Level 2 charging under suitable conditions; it is not a substitute for public DC fast charging, and it cannot restore a station whose fast-charging cable has been cut. Public fast-charger cables are station equipment, not consumer accessories that drivers can replace themselves.
