The wording matters because “EV-only” ordinarily suggests a lineup with no gasoline engine. Scout’s plan is more specific: battery-electric versions will sit alongside extended-range electric versions whose gasoline engine generates electricity rather than mechanically driving the wheels.

Is Scout Motors really all electric?
No—not if “all electric” means every vehicle runs only on battery power. Scout Motors is centering the new brand on electric drive, but Scout’s first two announced vehicles will have two energy-system choices: a 100-percent battery-electric system or a gasoline-fueled range-extender system called Harvester.
The Harvester system uses a small internal-combustion engine to recharge the high-voltage battery while the vehicle continues to drive electrically. That makes the Harvester an extended-range electric vehicle configuration rather than a conventional gasoline-powered SUV or truck with a mechanical drivetrain.
Scout’s current support documentation confirms that both the Traveler and Terra are planned with the choice between an all-electric system and a gas-powered range-extended system. The most accurate description is therefore: Scout is being relaunched around electric drive, with battery-electric and gasoline range-extender versions.
| Powertrain choice | How it works | What Scout projects | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battery-electric | A high-voltage battery supplies electric drive without an onboard gasoline engine. | Up to 350 miles of all-electric range. | Drivers who can charge regularly and want gasoline-free operation. |
| Harvester range extender | A gasoline engine recharges the battery while electric drive continues to propel the vehicle. | More than 500 miles of projected range. | Drivers who want electric drive but need longer-distance flexibility. |
Scout labels the range figures as internal manufacturer projections and says EPA estimates will be provided when available. Actual range can vary with temperature, driving habits, charging conditions, battery condition, towing, and terrain.
What did Scout Motors reveal?
Scout Motors unveiled two production-intent concept vehicles: the Scout Traveler, a midsize-style SUV focused on passenger and cargo versatility, and the Scout Terra, a pickup with a dedicated bed and a stronger work-tool emphasis. The company says both vehicles draw design and use-case inspiration from International Harvester Scout vehicles produced from 1961 to 1980.
The reveal announcement describes a body-on-frame platform, four-wheel drive, a solid rear axle, and available front and rear mechanical locking differentials. Those features point toward a truck-based approach aimed at towing, off-road travel, camping, and utility work rather than a road-focused crossover formula.

| Planned model | Body style and utility | Projected towing | Notable planned feature | Powertrain choices |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scout Traveler | SUV with passenger space, cargo area, and split tailgate. | More than 7,000 pounds. | Passenger-and-cargo versatility for travel, camping, and off-road use. | Battery-electric or Harvester range extender. |
| Scout Terra | Pickup with a 5.5-foot bed and work-oriented cargo utility. | More than 10,000 pounds. | Planned 240-volt outlet and pickup-bed functionality. | Battery-electric or Harvester range extender. |
Scout also projects nearly 2,000 pounds of payload for both models, acceleration as quick as 3.5 seconds from 0 to 60 mph, and estimated torque approaching 1,000 lb.-ft. Those are manufacturer targets for planned vehicles, not independently tested performance results or final specifications. Scout’s official reveal announcement contains the company’s current launch specifications.
How far can the Scout EV go and how will it charge?
The battery-electric Traveler and Terra are projected to travel up to 350 miles on a charge, while Harvester versions are projected to exceed 500 miles of total range. These numbers remain targets until Scout publishes final EPA-certified figures.
Scout says the vehicles will use the North American Charging Standard, commonly abbreviated NACS, along with an 800-volt electrical architecture and charging capability of up to 350 kW. Scout also plans bidirectional charging, which can allow a vehicle to send power outward for compatible equipment or other uses; the final capabilities and required equipment will need to be confirmed closer to production.
The planned utility equipment reflects the same emphasis. The Terra is described with 120-volt and 240-volt power outlets, while both models are being developed around towing, camping, off-road driving, and vehicle-powered work. Scout’s Traveler and Terra product information provides the current overview of those planned capabilities.

Scout Motors is targeting initial production in 2027, with customer deliveries expected to begin in 2028. Scout says it plans to build initial validation vehicles in 2026, with that work continuing and maturing into 2027. These are company targets, not guaranteed production or delivery dates.
In a March 23, 2026 production update, Scout said more than 85% of reservations were for the Harvester range extender as of March 2026 and that the company intends to produce the EREV first to match reservation demand. That is a dated reservation snapshot, not a permanent prediction of what buyers will want or a promise that every Harvester reservation will be fulfilled first.
| Milestone | Current Scout timing | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Validation vehicles | Initial vehicles planned for 2026. | Development and testing stage, not customer availability. |
| Initial production | Targeted for 2027. | Company target that may change. |
| Customer deliveries | Expected in 2028. | No final delivery month or complete model-by-model sequence has been provided. |
How much does it cost to reserve a Scout?
The current U.S. reservation page lists a $100 fully refundable reservation fee. A customer can select a Traveler or Terra and choose Electric or Electric + Gas, but Scout says options and pricing may change before a vehicle is built.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
The reveal announced targeted entry pricing below $60,000. That is not a final MSRP: the target excludes taxes, title, license, fees, premium features, and potentially changing incentives. A reservation is also not a purchase contract and does not guarantee a specific vehicle, price, production slot, or delivery date. See Scout’s current reservation terms and configuration page for the information available to U.S. customers.
Who owns Scout Motors?
Scout Motors is a new, independent American automotive company backed by Volkswagen Group. The company is reviving the Scout name and its work-oriented identity rather than bringing back the original International Harvester company as an automaker.
According to Scout Motors’ company history, the original Scout 80 began rolling off the assembly line in 1960. The original Scout became associated with utility, farming, outdoor recreation, and go-anywhere travel. International Harvester produced the historic Scout vehicles from 1961 through 1980, and the new Traveler and Terra use that heritage as a design and positioning reference.
“Two years in the making, the day has finally come to share the next generation of Scout vehicles with the world.” — Scott Keogh, President and CEO of Scout Motors, at the October 24, 2024 reveal.
Readers interested in the original vehicles—not the unreleased Traveler or Terra—may also want an International Scout Encyclopedia for a deeper look at Scout history. The book is a heritage reference and should not be treated as a guide to the specifications, maintenance, or availability of Scout Motors’ upcoming vehicles.
What should prospective buyers watch next?
The biggest unanswered questions are final EPA range, battery capacity, horsepower, production specifications, pricing, delivery sequencing, and the exact equipment included in each trim. Scout has not yet supplied a complete model-by-model delivery schedule in the reviewed materials.
- Confirm the powertrain: Choose between battery-electric and Harvester only after Scout publishes final specifications, range ratings, and pricing.
- Test the towing math: The projected towing figures may be compelling, but towing can materially reduce real-world electric range and charging convenience.
- Check charging access: NACS compatibility and 800-volt capability are planned features, but home electrical requirements, charging curves, and public-station performance still matter.
- Treat the reservation as optional: The $100 fee is refundable, but a reservation does not guarantee a purchase or delivery date.
- Separate heritage from production reality: Historic Scout photographs and specifications describe International Harvester vehicles, not the new Scout Traveler and Terra.
Scout’s planned accessory portfolio could eventually include auxiliary lighting, assist steps, power off-boarding solutions, off-road bumpers with recovery points, a heavy-duty winch, and other equipment. Those accessories support future ownership coverage around charging, recovery gear, camping, and truck equipment, but no third-party partnership or availability should be assumed before Scout confirms it.
