For an ocean-and-island drive, choose the Florida Keys Highway; for a mix of historic towns, beaches and coastal parks, follow A1A in northeast Florida. Other options include Sarasota-area Tamiami Trail, the Ormond Loop and shorter coastal stretches near Jacksonville or Fort Lauderdale. Visit Florida lists 26 designated scenic highways covering 1,524 miles, but the route lengths below describe specific featured segments—not whole highways—and none is a drive-time estimate.
How to choose a Florida scenic drive
Start with the experience you want: ocean views and island-hopping, a combination of history and coast, wildlife and parks, or a practical drive with cultural stops. Then check how much time you have, whether a ferry is part of the route, and what is open on your travel date. Visit Florida says scenic-highway eligibility can reflect scenic, historic, cultural, archaeological, recreational or natural resources; a designated route does not mean every mile has uninterrupted scenery.
| Route segment | Region and endpoints | Length stated by Visit Florida | Best fit | Access detail |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A1A, St. Augustine to Amelia Island | Northeast coast, St. Augustine to Fernandina Beach | 65 miles | History, beaches, coastal reserve and barrier-island parks | Itinerary includes the Mayport ferry crossing |
| A1A Ocean Islands Trail | Northeast coast, Fernandina Beach through Atlantic Beach toward Jacksonville Beach | 39.7 miles | A shorter coastal outing, with island and beach stops | Mayport Ferry is among the featured points |
| Florida Keys Highway | South Florida, near Miami through Key Largo to Key West | 106 miles | Island scenery and a drive to Bahia Honda State Park | Check current road and bridge conditions |
| Tamiami Trail / Windows to the Gulf Coast Waters | Gulf Coast, Palmetto through Bradenton, Sarasota and Venice to North Port | 70 miles | A scenic route that also serves as a practical highway, with cultural and outdoor stops | Plan stops separately from the through-drive |
| Ormond Loop & Trail | North of Daytona Beach; a loop around rivers, dunes, parks and historic sites | Approximately 34 miles | Oak-canopied roads, parks and seasonal nature interests | Check access and conditions for any planned trail stops |
| A1A Coastal Byway | Northeast coast, Ponte Vedra Beach through St. Augustine to Flagler Beach | 72 miles | A broader coastal itinerary through historic St. Augustine | Confirm the stops you want are open |
| Broward County A1A | Southeast coast, between the Miami-Dade and Palm Beach county lines | 25 miles | A shorter urban-coastal drive through Pompano Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood | Allow for ordinary local traffic and stop time |
All lengths are Visit Florida’s stated figures for the named features; the source result does not state their publication years. They are not estimates of driving time, and segments should not be added together as though they formed one continuous itinerary. The Florida portion of the East Coast Greenway is listed at 663 miles, but it is a walking and cycling trail network, not road mileage.
Which northeast Florida A1A route should you take?
St. Augustine to Amelia Island: history and coast
Visit Florida describes this itinerary as 65 miles. It heads north from St. Augustine along the Atlantic side, with Vilano Beach and the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve among its points of interest. It suits drivers who want historic-town context alongside beaches and natural areas; scenery and the precise character of A1A vary along the way. A1A Ocean Islands Trail: a shorter coastal outing
The 39.7-mile Ocean Islands Trail listing runs from Fernandina Beach through Atlantic Beach toward Jacksonville Beach. Visit Florida highlights Fernandina Beach, Boneyard Beach on Big Talbot Island, and the Mayport Ferry. Choose it when you want a shorter northeast coast route rather than the longer St. Augustine-to-Amelia itinerary; confirm how the ferry fits your departure time before setting out. Visit Florida’s A1A Ocean Islands Trail feature.
A1A Coastal Byway: Ponte Vedra Beach to Flagler Beach
This 72-mile feature follows the coast from Ponte Vedra Beach through St. Augustine to Flagler Beach. It offers another way to combine a historic-city stop with a longer coastal drive. The listed span differs from the St. Augustine-to-Amelia itinerary, so choose the endpoints that fit your plans rather than assuming the two mileage figures describe one route. Is the Florida Keys drive worth planning around?
Visit Florida describes the Florida Keys Highway—also called the Overseas Highway in related coverage—as a 106-mile route from near Miami through Key Largo to Key West. It identifies the highway as Florida’s only All-American Road and highlights Bahia Honda State Park. The span makes this a natural choice for an island-focused journey, but mileage alone does not tell you how long the drive will take once stops, traffic and conditions are considered. Visit Florida’s Florida Keys Highway guide.
When to go
Visit Florida suggests September for bird migration and as an alternative to winter crowds. Treat that as a seasonal planning suggestion, not a promise of fewer visitors, favorable weather or wildlife sightings. Check current forecasts and conditions close to departure.

What to expect on the Gulf Coast’s Tamiami Trail segment
Visit Florida’s 70-mile “Windows to the Gulf Coast Waters” feature runs through Palmetto, Bradenton, Sarasota, Venice and North Port. It presents the road as both scenic and practical, with cultural destinations and outdoor recreation in the surrounding region. That distinction matters: it can serve as a useful connection between places as well as a sightseeing drive, so allow separate time for attractions rather than expecting the whole segment to function like a slow scenic byway. Visit Florida’s Tamiami Trail feature.
Volker Reiss, identified by Visit Florida as a Tamiami Trail spokesperson, says, “Our highway is a functional highway,” in a passage noting that the road was historically designed to move people and vehicles. That context helps explain why the route is described as practical as well as scenic.

What makes the Ormond Loop different?
The Ormond Loop & Trail is an approximately 34-mile loop north of Daytona Beach, circling rivers, barrier-island dunes, parks and historic sites. Visit Florida calls out the oak canopy along Old Dixie Highway and nearby Tomoka State Park. It suggests fall or spring for guided trail walks and points to December through March for right-whale viewing; neither seasonal window guarantees an event, wildlife sighting or access on a particular day. Visit Florida’s Ormond Loop & Trail feature.
Can you take a shorter coastal drive near Fort Lauderdale?
Broward County A1A is listed as a 25-mile north–south route between the Miami-Dade and Palm Beach county lines, passing Pompano Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood. It is a compact option for a southeast Florida coastal drive, though urban stretches and local traffic make it sensible to plan time around the stops you actually want. What should you check before leaving?
- Road and bridge conditions: Check current conditions with the relevant transportation authority, especially before a long trip to the Keys. The tourism route pages are not live traffic or closure feeds.
- Ferry operation: If your itinerary uses the Mayport ferry, verify its current schedule and operating status with the ferry operator. Do not assume the crossing will be running at the time you arrive.
- Park access and hours: Confirm opening hours, access, closures and any reservation requirements directly with each park you plan to visit.
- Weather and seasonal plans: Recheck forecasts and any event or wildlife-viewing information close to travel; seasonal suggestions are not guarantees.
- Time for stops: Treat the published miles as route-segment lengths, not a timetable. Scenic detours and attractions can add time.
- Photography: Let a passenger handle the camera. Keep your attention on driving and pull over legally and safely before taking pictures.
For a trip spanning several regions, a Florida road atlas can be a useful planning aid alongside current navigation and official updates; no particular atlas edition is specified here.
