Samsung oxide solid-state EV battery: the truth about the 600-mile, 9-minute claim (US)

Samsung SDI’s SolidStack is a future all-solid-state EV battery program—not a verified 600-mile US product. The official nine-minute claim means 8%-to-80% charging, while “oxide-based” belongs to a separate Samsung Electro-Mechanics wearable battery announcement.

The Samsung oxide solid-state EV battery is not a verified 600-mile US product: Samsung SDI has not published an EPA-rated vehicle range or identified its EV battery as oxide-based. Samsung’s official nine-minute result means charging from 8% to 80%, while the SolidStack all-solid-state program targets mass production in the second half of 2027.

The headline combines separate pieces of Samsung battery news. Samsung SDI announced a 900 Wh/L all-solid-state roadmap and a separate 8%-to-80% fast-charging result, while a different Samsung company announced an oxide-based battery for wearables. Here is what those claims do—and do not—prove for US electric vehicles.

Key takeaways

  • According to Samsung SDI (2024), the official fast-charging figure is 8% to 80% in nine minutes, not a complete 0% to 100% charge.
  • According to Samsung SDI (2024), the all-solid-state roadmap targeted 900 Wh/L and mass production in 2027, but the figure was a technology roadmap target rather than an EPA vehicle-range result.
  • According to Samsung SDI (2026), the company now calls its all-solid-state technology SolidStack and targets mass production in the second half of 2027.
  • According to Samsung Electro-Mechanics (2024), its oxide-based 200 Wh/L all-solid-state battery was a compact product for wearable devices, not a clearly identified Samsung SDI EV battery.
  • TechSpot (2024) reported the widely repeated 600-mile and approximately 500 Wh/kg interpretation, but the reviewed Samsung SDI sources do not disclose the vehicle, test cycle, pack size, or EPA certification needed to verify that range.

What did Samsung SDI actually announce?

Samsung SDI announced two related but separately presented areas of battery development at InterBattery 2024: an all-solid-state-battery roadmap and an ultra-fast-charging technology. The announcement did not establish that one production EV battery had achieved both a 600-mile range and a nine-minute full charge.

On March 5, 2024, Samsung SDI described an all-solid-state-battery roadmap built around a stated energy-density target of 900 Wh/L and anode-less technology. Samsung SDI said the roadmap was aimed at mass-production readiness in 2027. The same official InterBattery 2024 announcement separately described a fast-charging technology that could take a cell from 8% to 80% in nine minutes, with a stated aim of bringing that charging technology to mass production by 2026.

What is verified about the 600-mile Samsung battery claim?

The 600-mile figure is not a verified US EPA range rating in the official Samsung SDI material reviewed for this article. The figure appears in independent reporting as an estimate associated with Samsung’s future battery technology, not as a published result for a named production vehicle.

TechSpot (2024) reported approximately 500 Wh/kg alongside the 600-mile interpretation. Samsung SDI’s official sources reviewed here do not provide the test information required to turn that interpretation into a certified US range claim. The missing details include the vehicle model, battery-pack size, test cycle, temperature, speed, state-of-charge window, aerodynamic assumptions, and EPA certification.

A credible 600-mile claim must identify the vehicle and test method. A battery-cell or battery-technology energy-density figure cannot be treated as an EPA vehicle range number without accounting for the complete pack, vehicle efficiency, software limits, operating conditions, and the applicable test procedure.

Measure Figure associated with Samsung’s story What the figure does—and does not—show
Volumetric energy density 900 Wh/L, Samsung SDI’s 2024 all-solid-state roadmap target Energy stored per unit of volume; it is not a vehicle range rating.
Gravimetric energy density Approximately 500 Wh/kg in TechSpot’s 2024 reporting Energy stored per unit of mass; it is not a certified EPA range result.
Vehicle range 600 miles as a widely circulated estimate Requires a named vehicle, complete battery pack, test cycle, conditions, and certification; those details are not supplied by the reviewed official Samsung SDI sources.

Does Samsung’s nine-minute charging claim mean a full charge?

No. Samsung SDI’s official nine-minute claim means charging from 8% to 80%, not charging from empty to full.

Samsung SDI’s later technical explainer again described the result as an 8%-to-80% charging window and attributed the performance to optimization of the lithium-ion transfer path and lower resistance. The Samsung SDI charging explainer from November 5, 2024 does not turn the result into a promise that a complete EV battery can be charged from 0% to 100% in nine minutes.

The charging window matters because “nine-minute charging” without the starting and ending state of charge can imply a much broader result than Samsung actually stated. The official claim is best written as “8% to 80% in nine minutes”. The 2024 announcement also described mass production of the fast-charging technology as a goal for 2026; a goal announced in 2024 is not proof that the technology is now installed in a US production vehicle.

What does Samsung’s 900 Wh/L figure mean?

Samsung SDI’s 900 Wh/L number is an energy-density target for its all-solid-state-battery roadmap, not a promise that a complete EV will travel 900 miles or 600 miles. Wh/L describes energy stored relative to volume, while vehicle range describes how far a particular vehicle travels under a defined test procedure.

Samsung SDI’s December 3, 2024 explainer presented the 900 Wh/L all-solid-state technology as a development achievement and explained the company’s approach. The existence of a high energy-density target can make a future battery pack smaller, lighter, or capable of storing more energy, but the reviewed material does not provide the complete vehicle data needed to calculate a certified 600-mile range.

The same distinction applies to approximately 500 Wh/kg. A Wh/kg figure concerns energy relative to mass; a Wh/L figure concerns energy relative to volume. Neither figure, by itself, specifies vehicle efficiency, pack overhead, usable state-of-charge range, thermal-management requirements, or the result of a US certification test.

Is Samsung’s EV solid-state battery oxide-based?

Samsung SDI’s EV all-solid-state battery has not been identified as oxide-based in the official Samsung SDI sources reviewed for this article. The oxide-based Samsung battery announcement belongs to a separate Samsung company and describes a compact wearable-device battery.

Program Company and date Chemistry and energy-density information Application and status
SolidStack all-solid-state technology Samsung SDI, 2026; roadmap announced in 2024 All-solid-state technology with anode-less development; Samsung SDI’s 2024 roadmap target was 900 Wh/L. The reviewed EV material does not identify the electrolyte as oxide-based. Future battery program; mass production targeted for the second half of 2027.
Compact all-solid-state battery Samsung Electro-Mechanics, 2024 Explicitly described as oxide-based, with an announced energy density of 200 Wh/L. Wearable devices; Samsung Electro-Mechanics said it was promoting the product to customers for prototype evaluations.
Earlier Samsung research Samsung Electronics Advanced Institute of Technology, 2020 A separate all-solid-state-battery research announcement; it does not establish the chemistry or retail status of Samsung SDI’s EV program. Research announcement, not evidence of a purchasable US EV.

The Samsung Electro-Mechanics announcement is clear about the oxide designation, the 200 Wh/L figure, and the wearable-device application. Samsung SDI’s EV announcements instead discuss solid electrolytes, anode-less technology, energy density, safety, pilot production, and commercialization timing without calling the EV battery oxide-based.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics and Samsung SDI are separate Samsung group companies. The two announcements should not be merged into one “Samsung oxide solid-state EV battery” claim unless a future primary source explicitly connects the chemistries and applications.

When will Samsung solid-state batteries be in cars?

Samsung SDI has a future EV battery commercialization program, but the reviewed official sources do not verify a Samsung solid-state battery in a purchasable US vehicle today.

Samsung SDI has been developing all-solid-state batteries through its S-Line pilot effort and has described prototype samples, development work, and commercialization planning. In its latest cited company material, Samsung SDI gave the technology the name SolidStack and placed the mass-production target in the second half of 2027. The March 11, 2026 Samsung SDI announcement described SolidStack as under development and showed a pouch-type sample for physical-AI applications, including humanoid robots and drones.

A pouch sample for physical-AI applications is evidence of development, not evidence of a certified consumer EV. Samsung SDI’s materials also refer to customer samples and automaker interest in broad terms, but the reviewed sources do not name a US production vehicle, a US launch date, an EPA range rating, or a retail battery option.

Commercial stage What the reviewed Samsung material supports What a shopper can conclude
Technology roadmap 900 Wh/L target, anode-less all-solid-state design, and a 2027 mass-production goal announced by Samsung SDI in 2024 Samsung SDI is pursuing the technology; the target is not a vehicle certification.
Pilot development Samsung SDI’s S-Line pilot effort and prototype-development activity Pilot work is a step toward manufacturing, not proof of retail supply.
Named technology SolidStack, with mass production targeted for the second half of 2027 in Samsung SDI’s 2026 material The program has a commercialization target, not a confirmed US delivery date.
Prototype sample Pouch-type sample shown for physical-AI uses such as humanoid robots and drones The sample does not establish installation in a passenger car.
Certified US vehicle No validated Samsung SDI EPA range or purchasable US vehicle identified in the reviewed sources US shoppers should not treat the 600-mile battery as an available product.

How should you evaluate the 600-mile and nine-minute claims?

Evaluate the Samsung claim by separating the battery chemistry, measurement, charging window, test protocol, and production stage instead of treating the headline as one demonstrated vehicle result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the Samsung company. Samsung SDI’s EV roadmap is not the same product as Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ oxide-based wearable battery.
  2. Identify the measurement. Check whether the number is Wh/L, Wh/kg, cell capacity, pack capacity, or vehicle range. A cell-level energy-density number should not be compared directly with an EPA-rated driving distance.
  3. Write the charging window in full. Samsung’s official result is 8% to 80% in nine minutes. The result should not be shortened to “a full charge in nine minutes.”
  4. Look for a test protocol. A defensible 600-mile US claim needs a named vehicle, pack configuration, test cycle, temperature, speed, state-of-charge limits, and certification details.
  5. Check the production stage. A laboratory result, a roadmap target, a pilot-line sample, an automaker evaluation, and a certified vehicle are different milestones.
  6. Ask about ownership-relevant performance. A serious comparison should also address cycle life, calendar life, safety testing and failure conditions, operating temperature, pressure requirements, production yield, cost, and materials availability.

The most reliable future announcement would connect all of those pieces: a named vehicle, a production battery, a disclosed chemistry, a repeatable charging test, and a certified range result. Until that evidence appears, “600 miles and nine minutes” should be treated as a combination of a reported estimate and a qualified charging result, not as a proven Samsung EV specification.

Want a technical background on solid-state batteries?

For readers who want to understand why energy density, electrolyte chemistry, interfaces, and charging windows are difficult to compare, the publisher’s catalog for Solid State Batteries: Design, Challenges and Market Demands describes coverage of solid-electrolyte materials, electrode interfaces, fabrication, electrochemical characterization, engineering challenges, and market context. This solid-state battery book is educational background, not a Samsung product or an accessory for an unreleased EV.

The Bottom Line

Samsung SDI is developing the SolidStack all-solid-state EV battery, with mass production targeted for the second half of 2027. The official nine-minute result is 8% to 80%, and the reviewed primary sources do not verify either a 600-mile EPA range or an oxide-based Samsung SDI EV battery.
