What happened to Chris Raschke at Bonneville?

Chris Mark Raschke died on August 3, 2025, after crashing the Speed Demon III streamliner during Bonneville Speed Week at Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats. The vehicle lost control near the 2.5-mile mark and became airborne during a run reported at an estimated 280 to 300 mph—often rounded in headlines to “nearly 300 mph.”

Medical personnel treated Raschke at the scene, but he died from his injuries. The Southern California Timing Association (SCTA), the Bonneville Nationals Inc. (BNI), and the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office were identified as investigating the crash. The available reporting does not establish a final official cause.

The fatal Speed Demon III run

Raschke was driving the new Speed Demon III on the second day of the 2025 event. Contemporary accounts variously described the pass as a preliminary run or an attempt connected with a speed-record effort. Published speed estimates include approximately 280 mph, 283 mph, nearly 300 mph, and approximately 300 mph.

That variation matters. There is no researched indication that the fatal pass produced an officially recorded 300-mph timed result. The most accurate description is that Raschke was traveling at an estimated 280–300 mph, or at nearly 300 mph, when the streamliner lost control.

Reports place the crash near the 2.5-mile point on Course No. 1. The car became airborne, and Raschke was treated at the scene. Neither the available SCTA/BNI information nor the contemporary reports reviewed for this article identifies whether the initiating factor involved a mechanical problem, the salt surface, aerodynamic instability, driver input, or another issue.

Investigation and what remains unknown

Officials began investigating the incident after the crash. Until a final report is released, it would be speculation to attribute it to a tire, steering component, suspension failure, aerodynamic design, surface condition, or driver error. A vehicle becoming airborne describes what witnesses and reports observed; by itself, it does not establish why the crash began.

The incident temporarily suspended racing at Speed Week. According to an event update from HOT ROD, racing resumed the following day. That establishes a pause and resumption, not a complete official chronology of every activity held during the event.

Who was Chris Raschke?

Raschke was a longtime Ventura, California, motorsports professional rather than an unknown entrant making a single Bonneville appearance. The SCTA/BNI memorial identifies him as Chris Mark Raschke and records his birth date as June 19, 1964. It describes him as a husband, father, and grandfather who spent his life in Ventura County.

He entered motorsports at an early age and became the first official employee at Ventura Raceway in the early 1980s, according to the official Speed Demon biography. His early racing included ATC three-wheelers and a Ford Pinto in mini-stock competition.

Raschke later worked with engine builder and tuner Kenny Duttweiler. That experience introduced him to race-car fabrication, welding, intercooler work, suspension-component sourcing, and the practical business side of performance engineering.

In 1996, Raschke joined Automotive Racing Products, commonly known as ARP, and became its director of sales and marketing. Industry coverage also described him as an ARP brand ambassador and a familiar presence at automotive-performance events. His career connected hands-on racing knowledge with the aftermarket companies and people who support professional motorsports.

Raschke’s land-speed-racing experience

Before driving for Speed Demon, Raschke spent years working as part of the team’s crew. The team biography says he earned licensing passes in the 369 White Goose Bar roadster, drove the Wayne Jesel Truck to a record and a red hat in the Bonneville 200 MPH Club, and was later invited by George Poteet to drive the Speed Demon.

The same biography credits Raschke with a 391-mph qualifying run during his first streamliner passes. Those accomplishments belong to his earlier racing record and should not be confused with the estimated speed of the fatal 2025 run.

What is Speed Demon III?

Speed Demon is a streamlined, piston-powered, wheel-driven land-speed vehicle associated with George Poteet’s racing program. Unlike a conventional road course car, a streamliner is built around low aerodynamic drag and high-speed stability for a measured run across a prepared salt course.

The official Speed Demon team describes the car and its development program as incorporating extensive sensors and safety equipment. Its technical description includes a yaw sensor intended to shut down the engine and deploy a parachute if the vehicle reaches a specified yaw angle, as well as fire-suppression equipment.

Those are design features of the broader program—not evidence that a particular safety system operated or failed in Raschke’s crash. Without an official investigative finding, the equipment cannot be used to infer the cause of the incident.

Why the 2025 program mattered

The 2025 campaign followed the death of George Poteet in July 2024. In a June 2025 account, the Speed Demon team said Poteet’s family had agreed that the gold Speed Demon would eventually be retired and placed in a museum, while the team could continue racing with other equipment.

Speed Demon III was a new car based on a chassis built by Tom Hanna. The team planned to carry over established engines, transmissions, wiring, rear ends, wheels, and tires as it pursued the next stage of the program.

The team’s stated goal was to continue Poteet’s work and pursue a major land-speed milestone. SEMA reported that the program had achieved a best run of 459.734 mph in the prior year and was seeking a historic 500-mph attempt in 2025. Those figures provide context for the campaign, but they do not mean Raschke’s fatal pass reached 459.734 mph or 500 mph.

The official Speed Demon site says the program has won the Hot Rod Magazine Top Speed Trophy 12 times and set numerous SCTA class and FIA international records. It also says the team had been racing at Bonneville since 2006. These are team-reported achievements and are best understood as background on the program rather than as findings about the crash.

Bonneville Speed Week and the salt flats

The Bonneville Salt Flats are in northwestern Utah, within the Salt Lake Field Office area managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The BLM describes the flats as a land-speed-racing site covering more than 30,000 acres and notes that racing and speed-record attempts have taken place there for generations.

Speed Week is not a conventional circuit race. Competitors make high-speed runs on measured courses laid across the salt, with timing, licensing, vehicle classes, and course conditions central to the event. Permitted activities can temporarily restrict access to parts of the flats, and the condition of the salt surface is important both to racing and to resource protection.

That setting is also why a report of a crash at “Bonneville” should not be interpreted like a report from a permanent racing circuit. The course is established on a natural salt surface, and the event’s conditions and procedures are part of the investigation context. They are not, however, proof that the surface caused this particular crash.

His influence also continues through the Chris Raschke Legacy Scholarship, which SEMA announced after his death. The scholarship is intended to support students pursuing careers in the automotive aftermarket and to carry forward Raschke’s contribution to performance, engineering, and professional excellence.

Readers looking for additional historical context may also be interested in a Speed Demon book about George Poteet’s program and Bonneville land-speed racing. It provides background on the team and its racing history; it should not be treated as a book about the 2025 crash unless a later edition specifically confirms that coverage.

Because the investigation record remains incomplete, responsible coverage should avoid graphic crash imagery, unverified videos, and claims about the cause. The confirmed story is already significant: a veteran racer and automotive-industry professional died while driving a new Speed Demon streamliner during one of the world’s most demanding land-speed events.
