The 900 has a new body forward of the A-pillars, more body styles, and a wider sequence of engines and equipment. Neither badge guarantees an easier or cheaper ownership experience: year, market specification, rust, originality, maintenance records, and the quality of the individual car matter more than the name on the boot.
What the Saab 99 EMS and classic 900 actually are
The two cars share an engineering family, but they are not the same model. Saab premiered the 99 on 22 November 1967 and began selling it as a 1969 model. The first-generation 900 was presented in May 1978 and reached customers in autumn 1978 as a 1979 model. Saab’s own museum chronology describes the 900 as the next development of the 99 rather than a simple rebadge.

The distinction is especially important when looking at a supposedly original car. A 99 EMS carries the equipment and engine specification of a particular 99 model year. A classic 900 can be an early carbureted hatchback, a fuel-injected saloon, an early turbo, or a later 16-valve performance model. Those versions can differ substantially in performance, packaging, parts, and value.
Timeline and model identity
Saab 99: the earlier platform
The 99 established the shape and mechanical lineage that Saab developed for decades. By the 1970s its range included carbureted, twin-carburetor, and injected engines, with body styles changing by year and market. The 99 Turbo premiered at the Frankfurt motor show in September 1977, before the 900 went on sale.

Classic Saab 900: a new front half and new packaging
The 1979 model-year 900 was based on the 99, but its body forward of the A-pillars was entirely new. That means the cars are related underneath while presenting different front structures, exterior panels, interior packaging, and, in many cases, equipment. The classic 900 covered model years 1979 through 1993; this comparison does not concern the later GM-based 900 introduced in the 1990s.
What “EMS” means on a Saab 99
EMS identifies a better-equipped 99 version in the model-year records, not a separate generation. In the 1975 specification, the EMS used Bosch mechanical continuous fuel injection on a 1,985 cc four-cylinder and was listed at 118 hp. The same year’s baseline 99 engine was listed at 100 hp, while a twin-carburetor engine became available from February. These are model-year figures, not a universal specification for every EMS.
Body style also changed with time and market. The 1976 record describes the EMS as a two-door saloon with superior specification. The 1978 record lists it as available as a three-door hatchback as well as the two-door saloon, with availability varying by market. Therefore, an EMS badge alone does not tell you whether you are looking at a saloon or hatchback, or which equipment was factory-fitted.

As the 900 arrived, the 99 range narrowed. For 1979, most remaining 99s were two- or four-door cars; a three-door hatch continued in Sweden to fill a market gap. A late 99 can consequently overlap the early 900 period without being a 900 in disguise.

What changed with the classic Saab 900
More body styles
The first 900 line-up offered three- and five-door Combi Coupé hatchbacks. Saab added a four-door saloon for the 1981 model year. The saloon’s 1981 update included a larger fuel tank and boot. This broader range makes the 900 easier to match to a use case, but it also means that “a Saab 900” is an unusually broad description.
A broader engine ladder
The initial 1979 range listed a 100 hp single-carburetor GL, a 108 hp twin-carburetor GLS, a 118 hp injected EMS/GLE, and a 145 hp Turbo. The figures apply to that model year and market record only. Later development brought the lighter, more powerful H engine across the 900 range, followed by further engine and equipment changes.
The 900 Turbo 16S arrived later. A Hagerty UK buying guide describes its 16-valve engine at 175 bhp and places its introduction in 1984. That output should not be compared directly with a 1975 99 EMS without identifying engine, induction, boost system, transmission, and model year.

How the two cars feel different to own
Space and access
A 900 buyer can choose among three- and five-door hatchbacks and, from 1981, a four-door saloon. That choice affects rear-seat access, loading, and the way a car fits daily use. The 99 EMS examples documented here are concentrated in two-door saloon and three-door hatch configurations. A clean 99 may be the more distinctive choice, but body-style preference should not override corrosion or structural condition.
Performance expectations
The 1975 99 EMS’s 118 hp and the 1979 injected 900’s 118 hp look identical on paper, yet they belong to different cars and years. The 900 range also offered a 145 hp turbo from its first model year and later 175 bhp Turbo 16S specification. Turbo hardware, fuel system, gearing, cooling, brakes, and maintenance history all affect the ownership experience. Compare like with like rather than using the EMS badge as a proxy for every 99 or every 900.
Parts and trim
The 900 buyer guide from Classics World calls out difficulty sourcing some panels, including genuine front wings. It also warns that trim can hide corrosion. Parts support therefore has to be checked for the exact body style, year, and region. A rare EMS interior or a Turbo-specific component may be valuable only if it is authentic and obtainable when needed.

Where to inspect a classic 900 before buying
The following points come from the 900 buyer guidance published by Classics World on 22 May 2026. They are inspection prompts, not a diagnosis of every car and not evidence that a 99 EMS is less or more prone to the same defects.

Start underneath
- Put the car on a lift or inspect it safely from underneath; do not rely on a walk-around in a dark driveway.
- Examine inner sills, box sections, floorpans, and outer sills for corrosion, repairs, distortion, and moisture traps.
- Check wheelarches, lower front-wing sections, and rear quarters, where bubbling may indicate deeper corrosion.
- Inspect the bonnet, boot or tailgate, and door bottoms, including seams and the lower edges hidden by seals.
- Look behind trim and liners because cosmetic panels can conceal rust.
Structural metal should be assessed before paying extra for an attractive color, rare trim, or performance badge. A specialist can distinguish a sound repair from a thick cosmetic covering that will need to be removed again.
Listen to the engine and inspect for leaks
- Listen for abnormal timing-chain noise, particularly on a high-mileage or neglected engine.
- Look for signs associated with possible head-gasket failure, including unexplained coolant loss, contamination, overheating history, or persistent exhaust steam after warm-up. Confirm any suspicion with proper mechanical tests.
- Check cold starting, idle quality, oil pressure behavior, charging, and cooling-system operation rather than judging the engine from a brief warm restart.
The cited buyer guide identifies timing-chain noise and possible head-gasket failure as checks; it does not establish a failure rate or claim that every 900 has either problem.
Test the transmission, steering, and brakes
Drive the car long enough to select every gear repeatedly, check clutch take-up, and listen for bearing or differential noise. Verify that the car tracks straight, brakes without pulling, and does not show steering play or vibration. A short, gentle lap can hide faults that appear only when the drivetrain and cooling system are fully warm.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTurbo-specific checks
On a turbocharged 900, watch for excessive smoke and confirm that the turbo operates properly during a test drive, as recommended by the buyer guidance. Establish which turbo system and model year the car has before using performance figures. The early 900 Turbo is listed at 145 hp in the 1979 model-year record, while Hagerty UK describes the later Turbo 16S at 175 bhp. Those figures represent different stages of development, not a guaranteed output for every modified or poorly maintained car.

- Ask for evidence of oil changes and turbo-related repairs.
- Check that boost arrives progressively rather than as an erratic surge.
- Inspect hoses, intercooler plumbing where fitted, exhaust smoke, and oil leaks.
- Do not pay a turbo premium until the engine, turbocharger, cooling system, brakes, and shell have been independently assessed.
How to verify an EMS or 900 is what the seller claims
- Record the chassis or vehicle identification number, engine number where available, model year, market, and body style.
- Compare the identification data with period Saab documentation and the car’s stamped or tagged components.
- Check whether the engine is carbureted, twin-carburetor, mechanically injected, or turbocharged; a badge is not proof of the hardware underneath.
- Inspect trim, wheels, instruments, seats, and exterior panels for period-correct details, while allowing for documented replacements.
- Read service invoices and restoration photographs. Look for dates, mileage, parts fitted, rust repairs, engine work, and evidence that the current seller actually maintained the car.
- Have a Saab-knowledgeable inspector examine structure, drivetrain, authenticity, and parts availability before committing to a non-refundable purchase.
Originality is not automatically better than a carefully documented restoration, but undocumented claims should not command a premium. Conversely, a modified car can be enjoyable while being worth less to a collector who wants factory specification.
Which is easier to live with?
There is no evidence here for a universal reliability ranking or a categorical answer that the 99 EMS or 900 is easier to maintain. A sound, well-documented example of either can be more usable than a neglected car wearing the more desirable badge. The 900’s wider body and engine range may make it easier to find a layout that suits commuting or carrying passengers, while a 99 EMS may appeal to a buyer who values earlier styling, rarity, and the specific feel of the 99 generation.
Choose the 99 EMS when these priorities dominate
- You want the earlier 99 design and are prepared to verify a particular EMS specification by year and market.
- A two-door saloon or three-door hatch suits your use.
- You value a mechanically injected 99 example and can document its originality or restoration.
- The shell is demonstrably sound and parts for that exact car are available in your region.
Choose the classic 900 when these priorities dominate
- You need the choice of three-door, five-door, or later four-door body styles.
- You want access to the evolving 900 engine range, including turbo and later 16-valve variants.
- You prefer the 900’s revised front structure, dashboard, heating and ventilation development, and later equipment.
- You have found a car with verified underside condition and a complete maintenance history.
Walk away from either car when these warning signs remain unresolved
- Structural corrosion cannot be inspected because the seller refuses a lift or independent examination.
- The identity, engine specification, or claimed trim does not match the documentation.
- Timing-chain noise, overheating, smoke, or drivetrain faults are dismissed without testing.
- There are no meaningful records and the price assumes collector-grade originality.
Price, insurance, and ownership budgeting
No fair, current price range for both models was established on a comparable basis. Values vary with country, currency, year, body style, engine, rust, restoration quality, originality, provenance, and season. A 900-only UK buyer guide cannot be used to declare a price winner against the 99 EMS, and an asking price is not the same as a completed sale.
Build a budget around inspection, transport, immediate maintenance, corrosion repair, tires, brakes, fluids, and hard-to-source trim rather than around the purchase price alone. Ask an insurer about agreed-value or classic-car cover, usage limits, storage requirements, eligibility, and geographic restrictions. Hagerty UK’s buying guide includes an insurance quote link, but its presence does not establish availability, pricing, or affiliate eligibility for every reader.
A practical buying sequence
- Define the brief: decide whether you need a hatchback or saloon, regular-road usability or occasional use, naturally aspirated or turbo power, and factory originality or documented modification.
- Screen the listing: request the model year, market, VIN, engine type, body style, ownership history, rust photographs, and service records before travelling.
- Inspect the shell first: verify sills, floors, box sections, arches, wings, quarters, bonnet, tailgate, and door bottoms on a lift.
- Assess the mechanical package: check cold start, chain noise, cooling, possible head-gasket symptoms, clutch, gearbox, brakes, steering, and charging.
- Test turbo operation if fitted: look for smoke and confirm controlled boost under load.
- Verify identity and originality: reconcile badges and trim with chassis data and invoices.
- Get a written specialist report: use its repair priorities to renegotiate or walk away.
- Price the complete project: include transport, immediate safety work, parts lead times, storage, insurance, and specialist labor.
Bottom line for a classic-car buyer
The 99 EMS is the earlier, higher-specification injected 99; the classic 900 is the next-generation development with a new front body structure, more body styles, and a much wider progression of engines and equipment. A 1975 99 EMS listed at 118 hp is not interchangeable as a buying proposition with a 1979 900 EMS/GLE at the same stated output, and neither should be compared casually with a 145 hp early Turbo or a 175 bhp Turbo 16S.
Buy the best documented shell and drivetrain you can verify. Use the badge to identify the starting point, then let model year, market, body style, engine, corrosion, originality, records, and specialist inspection determine whether the individual car deserves your money.
