Its inventor-submitted application called it a “one wheel motorcycle” and an “all electric mobility product”; its patent used the term “electric-powered self-balancing unicycle.” Those descriptions explain why “scooter” is an imprecise shorthand—but none establishes a current legal vehicle category.
What the RYNO was
The defining idea was a rider-supporting frame balanced over a single powered wheel. The patent describes a control system that adjusts motor output automatically to reduce the difference between measured pitch and a setpoint. That active balance mechanism distinguishes the design from a conventional two-wheeled scooter, which relies on two wheels rather than a self-balancing single-wheel layout.
RYNO Motors’ 2014 award application described motorcycle-like controls and riding posture in a shorter, more compact form. Why “scooter” is an inadequate label
In everyday conversation, “scooter” can refer to many small personal vehicles. For the RYNO, however, the word obscures the feature that defines it: a single wheel whose balance is actively controlled. The maker used several labels—“one wheel motorcycle,” “all electric mobility product” and “cycle”—while the patent title called it a self-balancing unicycle. “Self-balancing electric one-wheeler” is a useful descriptive term without claiming a formal legal classification.

The application said RYNO was intended for compact movement in dense urban environments and characterized it as falling under “Segway Scooter regulations.” That is a historical statement by the applicant, not current legal guidance. It does not establish whether the vehicle may be used on sidewalks, bike lanes or roads in any particular place. Rules depend on jurisdiction and may distinguish vehicles by design, speed, power and where they are ridden; check the applicable local authorities before riding.
What the patent record says
The US patent record identifies Christopher J. Hoffmann and Milorad Ozrelic as inventors and Ryno Motors Inc as assignee. For US9085334B2, it lists a priority date of August 22, 2012, a filing date of August 22, 2013, and publication and grant on July 21, 2015. Google Patents lists the patent as expired for fee-related reasons, with a lapse event dated August 26, 2019.
