Rowan Atkinson, the actor who played Mr Bean, reportedly claimed £910,000 to repair his McLaren F1 after a 2011 crash. ITV News described it in 2013 as Britain’s highest recorded car-repair claim at the time—but that does not establish it as the biggest insurance claim of any kind, worldwide, or a record that still stands.
What happened to Rowan Atkinson’s McLaren F1?
Atkinson crashed his McLaren F1 in August 2011. A February 2013 ITV News report said he successfully claimed £910,000 for repairs and that the work took about a year. The report characterized the repair bill as believed to be the highest ever recorded in Britain.
That is a reported car-repair insurance claim—not a verified ranking of every type of insurance claim. ITV’s account is contemporary news coverage, rather than a published insurer claims database or an independently audited record.
Was it one of the biggest car insurance claims ever?
It was reported as Britain’s biggest single car insurance claim, or largest car-repair claim, at the time. ITV News London repeated that bounded description in 2015. The available reporting does not prove that it was the largest claim across all insurance categories, the largest worldwide, or the current all-time record.

The distinction matters: the reported £910,000 covered repairs to one car. It should not be presented as a record for bodily-injury liability, every kind of motor claim, or insurance claims generally.
Why was the McLaren F1 so specialized to repair?
Christie’s catalogue documentation for a McLaren F1 road car describes a BMW V12 engine, six-speed manual gearbox, carbon-fibre composite body and central driving position. Those details give context to the car’s unusual engineering, but the catalogue does not document Atkinson’s particular damage or explain which repairs drove his bill. It would be speculation to attribute the reported cost to any one feature.

What happened to the car afterward?
In June 2015, ITV News London reported that Atkinson sold the car for £8 million. That is a sale price reported by the broadcaster; it does not establish that the crash increased the car’s value or make the figure a general valuation benchmark for McLaren F1s.
