Today, Stellantis describes Mopar as its global brand for genuine parts and authentic accessories.
What does Mopar mean?
Mopar combines “motor” and “parts.” It is a brand name, not a carmaker or a vehicle model. The word later took on a broader meaning among enthusiasts, who use “Mopar” as shorthand for Chrysler-family vehicles and their performance culture.

The two uses are related but distinct: officially, Mopar identifies parts, accessories and services; colloquially, it can describe a community and the vehicles associated with it.
How Mopar developed
1929–1937: parts infrastructure and a name
Chrysler’s parts operation predates the Mopar name. The company’s history says Chrysler formed the Chrysler Motor Parts Corporation in 1929, after acquiring Dodge, to support its growing business with dedicated parts manufacturing, supply and distribution. In 1937, the Chrysler Parts Corporation Activities Council coined Mopar and trademarked it for antifreeze products. Stellantis dates the brand’s birth to August 1, 1937. Mopar’s 85-year history and Stellantis Media’s 2017 timeline describe the name’s origins.

1940s–1950s: a wider parts business
Mopar’s official timeline records wartime production shifts and an expanding product line. A Mopar Parts Depot opened in Center Line, Michigan, in 1953, reflecting the growing role of parts distribution alongside the original antifreeze product.

1960s–1970s: performance and enthusiast identity
As Chrysler products became part of the muscle-car era, Mopar’s association extended to performance parts and racing. The history includes the 426 HEMI era, but Mopar’s enthusiast identity was not built around just one engine or car. Stellantis says owners were using “Mopar” for Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth vehicles by the late 1960s and early 1970s. A 2013 Stellantis North America account also reflects the name’s cultural meaning to enthusiasts.
1987 onward: more brands, services and customer care
Chrysler’s 1987 acquisition of American Motors assets brought Jeep parts and accessories into the Mopar portfolio. Later milestones included services such as Mopar Express Lane and vehicle-information technology, as the brand’s role broadened beyond supplying parts. These are milestones in its history, not a guarantee that every named service or tool is currently available in every market.

What Mopar means for owners today
Stellantis describes Mopar as its global brand for genuine parts and authentic accessories. The official U.S. parts page covers Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram and FIAT vehicles. Parts are vehicle-specific: check the make, model, year and fitment information rather than assuming a part works across every vehicle from one of those brands. For a discontinued part, Mopar recommends checking with an authorized Stellantis dealer.
Mopar is not the only parts label in Stellantis’s North American parts business. In an August 2023 announcement, Stellantis described Mopar as its genuine-parts and authentic-accessories brand and introduced bproauto separately as a competitively priced replacement-parts line. They are distinct brands with different stated roles; “replacement part” does not, by itself, establish that a part is genuine Mopar. Stellantis’s announcement explains the distinction.

Mopar’s reach: historical figures, not current totals
In its 2017 account marking Mopar’s 80th anniversary, Stellantis Media reported that the brand reached more than 150 markets and offered more than 500,000 products. The same 2017 account described more than 50 parts distribution centers, 3,650 limited-run Mopar vehicles sold since 2010, and more than 1,000 U.S. Mopar Express Lane operations, with more than 1,750 in over 20 countries. Those are figures reported for that period—not verified current totals.
In that 2017 announcement, Pietro Gorlier, then Head of Parts and Service (Mopar), FCA Global, said: “From humble beginnings as a simple name for antifreeze products, now the Mopar brand reaches customers in over 150 markets offering parts, service and innovative care throughout the whole customer journey.” The market figure in the quote refers to the 2017 statement, not a current count.
