Rowan Atkinson’s best-documented car was a McLaren F1, which he said he owned for 17 years and drove 40,000 miles. But no available source provides a complete, up-to-date inventory of his cars. The vehicles below are documented examples associated with him across different years: some former ownership, some historic competition cars and some cars reported in his collection at the time of an interview.
The best-documented car: McLaren F1
Atkinson told British GQ in 2022 that he bought a McLaren F1 in 1997, kept it for 17 years and drove about 40,000 miles in it. He also said the car drew attention, while he enjoyed it most when people did not recognize what it was. The interview records a past ownership story, not a car he still owns.
The F1 stands out among the cars linked to Atkinson because it was not merely a rare supercar kept for display: his account describes years of use on the road. It is the clearest example of his enthusiasm for driving as well as collecting.
Classic cars with competition history
Jaguar Mark VII
Goodwood Road & Racing’s 2025 interview reports that Atkinson bought a magnesium-bodied Jaguar Mark VII at auction in 2001 and campaigned it for years. Goodwood said the car remained road registered at the time of that interview; that does not establish its registration or ownership status today. The publication’s account identifies a 1952 Mark VII among cars reported in his collection in other coverage.

Aston Martin V8 Zagato
British GQ’s collection reporting and a Škoda Motorsport retrospective associate Atkinson with an Aston Martin V8 Zagato. The car is also linked in reporting to his racing, including a crash at Croft. Those accounts describe historical events and association; they do not establish the car’s current condition or whether he still owns it.
Ford Falcon Sprint
Atkinson has also been associated with a Ford Falcon Sprint in reporting about his cars and racing. The available accounts do not establish a model year or trim detail, so it is best identified simply as a Falcon Sprint rather than assigning it a more specific specification.

Aston Martins and other reported collection cars
Goodwood reported that Atkinson had a 1970s Aston Martin Vantage associated with Johnny English Strikes Again at the time of its interview. That is distinct from the V8 Zagato: the Vantage is identified through its film association, while the Zagato is linked to his racing history.
Other dated reports connect Atkinson with a Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead, Honda NSX, BMW 1M Coupe and a 2006 extended-wheelbase Mr Bean Mini. British GQ and Škoda Motorsport mention additional vehicles, but these examples should not be read as a present-day or exhaustive garage list. A car appearing in a Mr Bean production is not, by itself, evidence that Atkinson personally owned it.

What Atkinson has said about his taste in cars
Atkinson’s comments help explain why his collection has included both modern performance cars and older machinery. In the Goodwood interview, he said, “Real moderns I find very, very difficult to enjoy because of all the beeping and the bonging,” and added, “My feeling is that the best modern cars are around ten to 15 years old.” The remarks express his preference at the time of the interview, not a rule about every car he has owned.
In a 2018 AMA transcript, Atkinson said he was very into electric cars at the time and mentioned a BMW i3 and Tesla Model X. That dated comment does not verify present ownership of either car.

Which car was his favorite, and what happened to the F1?
Atkinson has called cars “my great obsession,” as quoted by British GQ. The available interviews do not establish a single favorite car. The McLaren F1 is the most clearly documented for length and intensity of use, but that is not the same as Atkinson naming it his favorite. He told GQ he sold it after 17 years of ownership.
Is there a complete list or valuation of his collection?
No complete, audited list of Atkinson’s current cars or reliable collection-wide valuation is established by the cited reporting. The strongest evidence is a set of dated interviews and retrospectives. Read each car as an association tied to its source and period, not as confirmation that it remains in his garage today.
