The 426 Street Hemi appeared in factory production cars for the 1966–1971 model years, across a changing roster of Dodge and Plymouth nameplates. The year and trim are crucial: a car name on a Hemi list does not mean every version of it offered the engine, and special race-only Hemi cars do not belong on an ordinary street-car roster.
Factory Street Hemi applications by model year
This year-by-year roster is a practical guide drawn from a secondary production compilation, not a certified exhaustive factory record. Model availability shifted with year and trim, and some entries in published compilations conflict with their own restrictions. Treat disputed applications as unconfirmed until checked against original model-year literature or authenticated production records.
| Model year | Dodge applications listed | Plymouth applications listed |
|---|---|---|
| 1966 | Coronet; Charger | Belvedere; Satellite |
| 1967 | Coronet and Coronet R/T; Charger | Belvedere; Satellite; GTX |
| 1968 | Coronet; Coronet R/T; Super Bee; Charger R/T | Road Runner; GTX |
| 1969 | Coronet R/T; Super Bee; Charger R/T; Charger 500; Charger Daytona | Road Runner; GTX |
| 1970 | Coronet R/T; Super Bee; Charger R/T; Challenger R/T | Road Runner; GTX; Superbird; Barracuda/Cuda |
| 1971 | Super Bee/Charger Super Bee; Charger R/T; Challenger R/T | Road Runner; GTX; Barracuda/Cuda |
Where the roster needs extra caution
The compilation’s 1966 Coronet entry and its 1967 Belvedere-family and Coronet entries are not fully reconciled with claims elsewhere about trim restrictions. In particular, do not assume the 1967 Belvedere, Satellite, or non-R/T Coronet was a generally available Street Hemi application based on this list alone. Verify the specific car and model year against primary documentation.
Names and platform relationships also changed over this period. The list identifies model and trim labels as reported by the secondary reference; it should not be read as evidence that every listed nameplate offered the engine in every year from 1966 through 1971.

Street Hemi cars versus race-only Hemi cars
A Hemi-powered car is not necessarily a factory Street Hemi application. Dodge’s official heritage account describes the 1968 LO23 Dart as a Hemi Super Stock race-car program and reports 80 LO23 cars. That race-focused program is not evidence that the regular-production Dart was available with the Street Hemi. A secondary production compilation likewise classifies the 1968 Dart and Plymouth Barracuda A-body Hemi cars—including the BO29 Barracuda—as race-Hemi production.
For that reason, the 1968 LO23 Dart and BO29 Barracuda should not be added to the ordinary Street Hemi roster without clearly labeling their race-only status. The number of LO23 cars is the heritage page’s reported figure, not a count of Street Hemi-equipped production cars.

How reliable are published production totals?
Ultimate Muscle Car, updated in 2025, reports 9,761 Street Hemi engines for production cars from 1966 through 1971. Its annual entries do not sum to that headline figure, and its cross-year model totals also differ from some year entries. The total is therefore a secondary published estimate, not a settled factory count.
The same compilation reports 150 1968 A-body Hemi cars, categorizing the Dart and Barracuda examples as race-Hemi cars. That figure should not be treated as a count of Street Hemi cars. Because the published totals are inconsistent, comparing individual models by rarity using those figures would create false precision.

What to check when identifying a factory-equipped car
- Pin down the model year and exact trim. A nameplate alone is not enough to establish that the Street Hemi was offered.
- Distinguish street-option cars from race programs. Hemi Super Stock models and special race packages require separate classification.
- Look for period factory literature and authenticated records. Brochures can establish advertised availability, while reliable production records are needed to substantiate a particular car’s original equipment and build details.
The Henry Ford’s catalog, for example, records an original Plymouth Division sales brochure for the 1967 Barracuda, created by Chrysler Corporation and dated November 1966. That record shows a period-literature source exists; it does not, by itself, prove that a Street Hemi was offered in that Barracuda model year.
Street Hemi output figures in secondary coverage
SlashGear’s 2024 model overview gives the engine figures as 425 hp and 490 lb-ft. Those are the publication’s stated specifications; they should not be treated as a definitive period rating without confirmation from factory literature. Period horsepower ratings may also use a different measurement convention than modern figures, so direct technical comparisons require care.
