The Roush P-51 Mustang is a road-going Ford Mustang special edition; the P-51 Mustang is a North American World War II fighter aircraft. They share the Mustang name and an aviation-inspired visual language, but they are not related products, and the car is not an aircraft replica. Roush’s 2017 edition used a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 rated by the manufacturer at 727 horsepower, while the Smithsonian describes the aircraft as a single-engine, low-wing, long-range fighter developed for Britain and later used extensively by U.S. forces.
This photo tour keeps the comparison honest. It looks at the car’s bodywork, cabin, wheels, suspension and engine bay; then examines the fighter’s wing, canopy, propeller and airframe. The photographs can reveal the shared tribute, but they cannot turn a 2017 performance car and a wartime aircraft into equivalent machines.

First, identify which Mustang you are looking at
“Roush P-51 Mustang” means a Roush-modified Ford Mustang package. The name “P-51 Mustang” without the Roush qualifier normally means the North American fighter aircraft. The aircraft was designed and built in the early 1940s for military service; the Roush car is a modern, road-legal performance vehicle styled as a tribute.
Roush says its first P-51 Mustang arrived for the 2008 model year. The specifications discussed in this tour apply specifically to the 2017 ROUSH P-51. They should not be silently applied to every Mustang carrying a P-51 badge, nor should the dimensions of one museum aircraft be treated as universal for every P-51 variant.

The table combines manufacturer claims with museum records, so each number remains tied to its source and variant. It is not a performance ranking.
How to use the photo tour
Start with a true side-by-side image, but label the subjects precisely. The car caption should read “2017 ROUSH P-51 Mustang.” The aircraft caption should name its exact model or variant only when the photograph or its collection record supports that identification. If an image merely shows a restored P-51 without a documented variant, call it a P-51 Mustang rather than assuming it is the Smithsonian’s P-51D-30-NA.
Photographs are strongest at showing design cues: the car’s grille, hood treatment, badges, wheels, leather and engine hardware; and the aircraft’s propeller, canopy, wing, landing gear and airframe. They cannot establish a car’s measured acceleration, an aircraft’s combat performance or the final number of cars delivered.
Photo stop 1: the Roush car’s front and side profile
Grille, lamps and badges
A front three-quarter photograph should make the car’s Mustang base clear before the special-edition details are discussed. Look for the grille opening, the road-car lighting and the low, wide stance. P-51 badges identify the tribute package; they do not indicate that the vehicle was made by the aircraft’s original manufacturer.
Roush describes aviation references throughout the 2017 package. A close-up of a badge is useful because it records the styling language without implying that the car carries military equipment or an aircraft airframe component.
Hood and body treatment
The hood is the visual bridge between the ordinary road car and the aviation theme. Photograph the hood from above and at eye level so the surface treatment, vents and paint contrast are visible. Roush’s description also identifies carbon-fiber exterior pieces. In a caption, say that carbon-fiber trim is part of the 2017 package; do not claim a specific panel is carbon fiber unless the image or documented specification identifies it.

A side view shows how the body kit changes the Mustang’s proportions. Keep the camera low enough to record the rocker panels and wheel openings, then take a second image from a normal standing height so readers can distinguish the genuine body shape from perspective distortion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheckerboard references
Roush says the checkerboard badging references the 357th Fighter Group. That is a historical styling reference, not evidence that the car served in the group or that its paint reproduces one particular combat aircraft. A caption can explain the connection while leaving the original markings and the modern badge visually distinct.
Photo stop 2: wheels, brakes and the TrakPak stance
Use a wheel-level photograph to show the forged wheels and the way the car sits over its suspension. Roush lists TrakPak suspension for the 2017 edition. The image can document the wheel design, tire stance and visible suspension height; it cannot prove a handling time or a track result.
For a useful sequence, take one full side image, one three-quarter wheel image and one detail of the wheel center or P-51 marking. Keep the car stationary and identify the road surface and camera angle in the caption if perspective makes the ride height difficult to judge.
Do not read aircraft meaning into ordinary road components. A forged wheel is a performance-car part, while an aircraft’s wheel and landing gear serve a different load path, operating environment and maintenance regime. The shared visual idea is strength and speed, not interchangeable engineering.

Photograph the stitching, leather texture and P-51 identifiers in separate close-ups. Avoid calling the cabin a cockpit without qualification; a car has road controls, passenger seating and automotive safety systems, whereas the fighter’s cockpit was designed around flight instruments, weapons and a pilot’s survival needs.
A good caption might identify the leather as bomber-jacket-inspired and note the P-51 badge. It should not claim that the leather came from an aviation supplier or that the trim duplicates a particular aircraft interior unless documentation says so.
Photo stop 4: the engine bay and the 727-horsepower claim
The engine-bay image is where the car’s mechanical identity becomes clearest. Roush’s 2017 description specifies a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 rated at 727 horsepower. That figure is the manufacturer’s stated output for this edition, not an independently verified dyno result.
Frame the supercharger and engine cover together, then add a wider image showing the surrounding bay. Label the powertrain as a supercharged V8 and keep the 727-horsepower attribution in the caption or adjacent text. Do not compare that number directly with an aircraft horsepower figure that is not established in the cited records.
The car’s six-speed manual or automatic transmission choice is another point where the two Mustangs diverge. The fighter transfers engine power through an aircraft propeller and related flight systems; the car sends power through a road-car transmission and driven wheels. Their controls, cooling requirements and operating loads are fundamentally different.
Photo stop 5: recognizing the fighter in a photograph
Propeller, canopy and wing
A P-51 photograph is easiest to identify from its overall aircraft silhouette: a single engine at the nose, a propeller, a low wing and a fighter canopy. The Smithsonian describes the P-51 as a single-engine, low-wing, long-range fighter. Those characteristics are safer identification clues than paint color alone, because restored aircraft can carry different historical markings.

Use a nose view to show the propeller and intake area, a side view for the canopy and tail, and a plan or elevated view for the wing shape. State only what the photograph supports. A visible checkerboard or national marking may suggest a unit or period, but it does not by itself establish the aircraft’s exact serial number or variant.
Variant and museum provenance
The Smithsonian collection record cited for dimensions concerns a P-51D-30-NA. Its listed measurements are 37 feet 2 inches long, a 32-foot 3-inch wingspan and 13 feet 4 inches in height. Attach those figures to that museum aircraft and variant. Earlier and later P-51 versions, restored examples and aircraft with different equipment should not automatically be assigned the same measurements.
If your photograph is of the Smithsonian aircraft, identify it as the collection’s P-51D-30-NA when the image record supports that statement. If it is another restored Mustang, use the available provenance instead. A careful caption is more informative than a confident but unsupported variant label.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the aircraft was built to do
The P-51 was developed for Britain and later became closely associated with U.S. long-range bomber escort. The Smithsonian’s description emphasizes its role as a long-range fighter, which explains why range and escort capability matter more to its identity than a simple top-speed comparison.
The Smithsonian’s 2017 overview gives an approximate World War II production total of about 14,000 P-51s. “About” matters: it is a rounded historical figure, not a count of surviving airframes or a claim that every production example was the same variant.

This is a category comparison, not a contest. Asking which one is “faster” or “better” without defining the measurement would produce a misleading answer because a road car and a fighter plane are built for unrelated operating problems.
Why the 51-car figure needs a qualification
Roush’s 2017 product description says only 51 cars would be built. That is an announced production run attached to the edition, not an independently audited final-delivery count in the cited material. Use wording such as “Roush announced a planned run of 51” rather than “exactly 51 were completed.”
The number is also part of the tribute’s symbolism: “P-51” and “51 cars” reinforce the aircraft connection. It does not mean the car shares the aircraft’s production scale. The Smithsonian’s approximate figure of about 14,000 P-51s built during World War II belongs to a wartime aircraft program and cannot be used to estimate the rarity of the car.

Reading Jack Roush’s promotional claim
Roush founder Jack Roush is quoted on the official product page as saying, “THE ROUSH P-51 IS THE MOST POWERFUL AMERICAN PRE-TITLED CAR EVER BUILT.” Present this as Roush’s promotional claim. The cited material does not provide an independent ranking methodology, a comparison set or a test confirming the superlative, so it should not be rewritten as an established industry record.
How to caption a responsible side-by-side image
- Name both subjects: use “2017 ROUSH P-51 Mustang” for the car and the documented aircraft model or variant for the plane.
- Separate observation from context: describe visible badges, checkerboard details, propeller, canopy or wing first; then explain the historical reference.
- Attach numbers to their sources: identify 727 horsepower and the planned 51-car run as Roush’s 2017 claims, and the dimensions as measurements for the Smithsonian’s P-51D-30-NA.
- Avoid false equivalence: say that the car is a road-going tribute and the aircraft a long-range fighter rather than implying shared performance specifications.
- Record provenance: include the photograph date, location and aircraft serial or collection information when available.
Common identification mistakes
- Calling the car an aircraft: the Roush P-51 is a modified Ford Mustang automobile.
- Calling the fighter a Roush product: Roush created the modern tribute package, not the North American aircraft.
- Applying one aircraft’s dimensions to every P-51: the cited measurements belong to a P-51D-30-NA collection aircraft.
- Treating 727 horsepower as a test result: it is the manufacturer’s stated rating for the 2017 edition.
- Presenting the 51-car run as a verified final count: the source describes a planned production quantity.
- Assuming paint proves provenance: restored aircraft can wear markings that require documentation to interpret.
- Turning the comparison into a speed race: the sources establish different missions and power systems, not a meaningful car-versus-aircraft test.
Further aircraft reading
Readers who want manufacturing and wartime production context can look for Michael O’Leary’s Building the P-51 Mustang, listed in the Smithsonian catalog. The catalog record establishes the book and its subject; availability, price and edition should be checked through a current library or bookseller record.
For the car, remember that Roush performance parts such as supercharger kits and exhaust components can have model-year-specific fitment. A catalog category is not proof that a component belongs on the limited 2017 P-51 package, so verify the exact vehicle and part documentation before treating any accessory as original equipment.
The useful conclusion from the photographs
The Roush P-51 Mustang succeeds as a visual and naming tribute: P-51 badges, checkerboard references, carbon-fiber exterior pieces, a 727-horsepower supercharged V8 and aviation-inspired leather give a modern Mustang a deliberate fighter-plane theme. The original P-51 remains a historically significant single-engine, low-wing, long-range fighter whose identity comes from wartime design and bomber-escort service.
