The P-51 is dramatically faster and more powerful in its intended environment, but that does not make it a “better Mustang.” One carries a driver on roads; the other carried a pilot, guns and sometimes bombs or rockets through wartime air operations. The most useful comparison is therefore about mission, engineering and test conditions—not a simple horsepower ranking.
What is being compared?
The phrase “Roush Mustang vs. P-51 Mustang” combines two machines that share a name but not a job. The archived Car and Driver comparison uses a 1999 Roush Stage 3 and a North American P-51D Mustang. It is not a test of a current Roush package against every P-51 variant ever built. The magazine article originated in the November 1999 issue and its archive page was updated August 1, 2026.

Roush Performance Products was formed in 1996 after development work on Ford’s 1994 SN95 Mustang platform; its first Mustang vehicle package had been available in early 1995. That history explains the automotive side of the name. Roush modified production Mustangs for road use. It did not build the wartime aircraft.

The P-51D was a military fighter and fighter-reconnaissance aircraft. The Royal Canadian Air Force’s historical fact sheet describes the Mustang as first flown in 1940 and explains that early Allison-powered versions had limited high-altitude performance. The later Merlin-powered combination gave the type the performance and range needed for long-range escort missions. The “P-51” badge used by some special-edition road cars is a tribute to that aircraft; the car remains a road-going Mustang with automotive systems, limits and legal requirements.

At-a-glance specifications from the named sources
The figures below are kept in their original source sets. Car and Driver’s numbers come from its 1999-era comparison, while the aircraft figures in the second column come from the Royal Canadian Air Force fact sheet. They should not be merged into one universal specification.

The table shows why an unqualified “which is faster?” answer is incomplete. The 1999 article places the road car at 162 mph and the aircraft at 437 mph, while the RCAF fact sheet gives the P-51D a 448-mph maximum. Those are different source-specific figures, not a discrepancy to hide by averaging.
Why the P-51 is faster without making the Roush irrelevant
Different aerodynamic environments
A road car must generate enough tire grip to accelerate, corner and stop while remaining stable close to the ground. Its body is constrained by road width, ride comfort, visibility, cooling at low speed and regulations governing lighting, crash protection and emissions. A fighter is designed around lift, drag, altitude, fuel load, weapons and pilot survivability. Its propeller, wing and supercharged engine are optimized to move a large aircraft through air rather than push four tires along pavement.
At several miles above sea level, air density is much lower than at the surface. The P-51’s supercharged V-12 and long, streamlined airframe were developed to preserve performance in that environment. A Mustang that can cruise at altitude while carrying fuel and ammunition is solving a different engineering problem from a Mustang that must idle in traffic, absorb potholes and meet road-use requirements.
Power is only one part of speed
Horsepower indicates the rate at which an engine can do work, but it does not describe mass, gearing, propeller efficiency, wing loading, tire grip or the operating altitude. The Roush’s output is sent through a drivetrain to the rear wheels. The P-51’s output turns a propeller and is converted into thrust by the aircraft’s propeller-and-airframe system. Comparing the numbers as though both engines were installed in the same chassis would produce a misleading conclusion.

Mission equipment changes the trade-offs
The RCAF fact sheet lists six 0.5-inch machine guns and provisions for bombs, rockets or drop tanks. Those systems, ammunition and fuel capacity add weight, but they are essential to the aircraft’s mission. The Roush’s equipment is aimed at carrying people on roads: seats, brakes, suspension, bodywork and road tires. Removing or adding military payload would change the aircraft’s performance, just as changing tires, fuel and passenger load changes a car’s behavior.
How the 1999 comparison should be read
Car and Driver’s figures are period results
Car and Driver’s archive identifies the Roush Stage 3 at 335 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 333 lb-ft at 3,800 rpm. The same archived comparison gives the Roush a 162-mph top speed. Those values describe the 1999 Stage 3 tested for that article, not every Roush Mustang and not a modern model year.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For the P-51D, that article lists a Packard V-1650-7 supercharged V-12 producing 1,490 horsepower at 3,000 rpm and 2,608 lb-ft at 3,000 rpm, with a 437-mph top speed and a 41,900-foot ceiling. Its table also records 7.0 seconds to 60 mph, a 15.2-second quarter mile at 105 mph and 1,100 feet to stop from 70 mph.
Those aircraft acceleration and braking entries need context. The P-51 was not a production automobile being tested on a normal road-test course. The archive presents a playful cross-category comparison with unusual test conditions. Treat the figures as the historical article reports them, not as evidence that an aircraft can be driven like a street car or that its stopping distance is directly interchangeable with a car magazine’s standard test.
Why another authoritative source gives different aircraft numbers
The Royal Canadian Air Force fact sheet lists 1,590 horsepower and a 448-mph maximum speed for the P-51D, along with a 360-mph cruising speed. It also lists a 41,900-foot service ceiling, 1,300-mile range, 7,125-pound empty weight and 11,600-pound gross weight. These figures are authoritative for that fact sheet, but the available source descriptions do not provide enough shared measurement detail to reconcile them with Car and Driver’s 1,490-hp and 437-mph values.

The safe method is to attach the source to every set of aircraft numbers. Do not present 1,490 and 1,590 horsepower as if they were two readings from one test, and do not describe 437 and 448 mph as a single uncontested top speed. Differences can arise from variant condition, ratings, propeller or engine setup, fuel and payload, atmospheric conditions, or the purpose of the publication, but the cited material does not establish which factor explains this pair.

From limited high-altitude performance to long-range escort
The P-51 lineage began with an Allison-powered design first flown in 1940. According to the RCAF’s history, those early versions were limited at high altitude. The Merlin engine and associated installation changed the aircraft’s capability, allowing effective long-range escort work. That development is more important than the Mustang name: the aircraft became valuable because it could combine speed, altitude and range with the ability to protect bomber formations.
Aircraft scale and operating envelope
The RCAF dimensions make the physical difference clear: a 37-foot 1-inch wingspan, 32-foot 3-inch length and 13-foot 8-inch height. The aircraft carries one pilot and operates in three dimensions, where ceiling, climb, fuel planning and energy management matter. Its listed 1,300-mile range is an aviation mission figure, not an estimate of how far a driver can travel between service stations.
Weapons and external stores
Six 0.5-inch machine guns gave the P-51D an offensive and defensive role, while bomb, rocket and drop-tank provisions allowed mission-specific loading. A loaded aircraft would not necessarily match an unloaded aircraft’s speed or climb performance. This is another reason a single maximum-speed number cannot summarize the machine’s usefulness.
What the Roush Mustang was built to do
Road performance derived from a production Mustang
A Roush Stage 3 starts with a Ford Mustang platform and turns it into a performance road car through modifications appropriate to street driving. The 1999 comparison’s output and speed figures represent one period configuration. The car’s value lies in usable acceleration, controllable handling and the ability to operate within the road network, not in reaching aircraft-like speed.

Roush’s later catalog is not proof of 1999 fitment
Roush’s current Mustang catalog includes model-year listings for supercharger systems, exhaust, body components, suspension and accessories. A part shown for a current Mustang should not be assumed to fit a 1999 Stage 3. Owners need to verify model year, engine, trim, transmission, existing modifications and the manufacturer’s fitment notes before ordering. Prices and availability can change, so a current catalog entry is not a permanent specification for the historical car.
Road-car constraints are part of the design
The Roush must start, idle, steer, brake and remain serviceable in ordinary use. It can be parked, registered and driven by a licensed driver subject to local law. Those requirements impose compromises that do not apply to a fighter kept in an aviation environment. Calling those compromises weaknesses misses the point; they are what make the car useful to its intended owner.
Roush “P-51” editions and the fighter-plane confusion
When a Roush Mustang carries a P-51 designation, the badge references the famous North American fighter. It does not turn the car into an aircraft, give it the aircraft’s engine, or make its performance figures interchangeable with the P-51D’s. The correct description is a Roush-modified Ford Mustang styled or named in homage to the fighter.
For identification, check the car’s model year, documentation, VIN-related records and equipment list rather than relying on the badge alone. “P-51 Mustang” can mean the aircraft in an aviation context, while “Roush P-51” can mean a special-edition road car. Asking which year and which machine prevents the most common misunderstanding.

Which Mustang is “better” depends on the question
| If you care most about… | The relevant machine | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Legal road driving, commuting and road trips | Roush Mustang | It is engineered around roads, occupants, traffic and serviceability. |
| High-altitude speed and long-range escort history | P-51D | Its Merlin-powered design, winged airframe and mission equipment serve aviation operations. |
| Hands-on automotive modification | Roush Mustang | Model-year-specific performance parts and chassis upgrades are the relevant tools. |
| Military-aviation history | P-51D | Its development, armament and escort role are central to its significance. |
| Collecting a physical representation | Scale or die-cast P-51 model | A model captures the aircraft’s form without pretending to be an operating airplane. |
This is a decision framework, not a claim that one machine is universally superior. A driver needs predictable road behavior; an aviation enthusiast may care about authenticity, restoration and historical configuration. Their success criteria are different.

How fast is a P-51 compared with a Roush Mustang?
Using Car and Driver’s archived 1999 comparison, the Roush Stage 3 is listed at 162 mph and the P-51D at 437 mph. Using the Royal Canadian Air Force fact sheet, the P-51D’s maximum is 448 mph, with a 360-mph cruising speed. In either source set, the aircraft’s published maximum is far higher, but the comparison is meaningful only when the source, variant and operating context stay attached to each figure.
The speed gap also says nothing about whether either machine could perform the other’s job. The aircraft cannot replace a road car for daily transportation, and the road car cannot escort bombers, carry machine guns or operate at a 41,900-foot ceiling. Maximum speed answers one narrow question; mission capability answers the practical one.
Common mistakes when comparing the two
- Mixing variants: the archive concerns a 1999 Roush Stage 3 and a P-51D, not a current Roush model and an unspecified Mustang aircraft.
- Blending source figures: keep Car and Driver’s 1,490-hp, 437-mph set separate from the RCAF’s 1,590-hp, 448-mph set.
- Treating the aircraft test like a road test: the 60-mph, quarter-mile and braking entries come from a playful historical comparison and do not establish ordinary automobile behavior.
- Equating horsepower with superiority: power must be interpreted with mass, aerodynamics, propulsion method, altitude, payload and mission.
- Assuming current parts fit an old car: check year, trim, engine and modifications before buying a catalog component.
- Reading the P-51 badge literally: a Roush P-51-named car remains a road vehicle inspired by the fighter.
For readers who want a physical P-51
A scale model is a practical way to explore the aircraft without confusing a replica with an operating machine. Eduard’s manufacturer sheet identifies a 1/48-scale P-51 Mustang plastic model kit. Before purchase, confirm the exact variant, scale, tooling, paint and accessory contents on the current listing. A separate Matchbox Collectors North American P-51 Mustang die-cast replica is another display-oriented option; availability can change, and it is not an aircraft that can fly.
These products belong in the enthusiast and model-building category, not in the performance-car specification table. They are relevant because the reader interested in the name may want an accurate desk or shelf representation of the aircraft after learning how different it is from a Roush Mustang.
Bottom line
The Roush Mustang and the P-51D share an evocative name but occupy separate worlds. The 1999 Roush Stage 3 is a 335-hp road car listed at 162 mph in Car and Driver’s archived comparison. The P-51D is a Merlin-powered fighter whose published figures vary by source: Car and Driver lists 1,490 hp and 437 mph, while the Royal Canadian Air Force lists 1,590 hp and 448 mph maximum. The aircraft wins any simple speed or power comparison because it was designed for high-altitude combat aviation. The Roush wins the question that matters to a driver: which one can be owned, registered and used as a road car?
