Rosco McGlashan is leading Aussie Invader 5R, an Australian rocket-car project targeting 1,000 mph (about 1,600 km/h). The project says the car is entering rocket-engine testing, but it has not announced a confirmed record-attempt date. The phrase “bigger than the America’s Cup” remains unverified: the source and meaning of that comparison have not been established, so it should not be treated as a confirmed McGlashan quote.
Who is Rosco McGlashan?
The Aussie Invader project identifies McGlashan as its team leader and driver. Its biography says he was born in Perth in 1950 and traces his interest in land-speed racing to seeing Donald Campbell’s Bluebird in Australia as a child. Those details are the project’s account of his background.
The project also credits McGlashan with setting an Australian land-speed record in Aussie Invader 2 in March 1994, at 500 mph (802.6 km/h). That history is reported by the team and is not independently corroborated by the sources cited here. Aussie Invader’s land-speed record history
What is Aussie Invader 5R aiming to do?
Aussie Invader 5R is a rocket-powered land-speed car project built in Perth, Australia. Its stated goal is 1,000 mph (about 1,600 km/h), a target rather than a speed the car has achieved. The team describes the proposed vehicle as using a bi-propellant rocket engine and publishes the following figures:

Is the record attempt happening now?
The project homepage, updated October 6, 2026, says the car is entering its rocket-engine testing phase and that the team is working with New Zealand rocket company Snowdon Consulting Ltd. That is a development update from the project, not confirmation that testing is complete, that the car has made a record run, or that an attempt date is set. Aussie Invader 5R project homepage

What does “bigger than the America’s Cup” mean?
The origin of the comparison in the headline has not been established. No identifiable speaker, interview or original story is available to show whether “bigger” refers to audience, spectacle, national profile, commercial scale or something else. There is therefore no basis to attribute the phrase to McGlashan or to use it as a measurable comparison between the project and the sailing competition.
What can be stated is narrower: Aussie Invader 5R has a 1,000-mph ambition and is in the project-reported engine-testing phase. The America’s Cup wording should remain a headline claim unless its source and intended comparison are confirmed.
