A rooftop tent fits a Subaru Outback only when four things line up: the exact model year and trim, the roof-load limit the owner’s manual gives for driving, the rack’s dynamic capacity, and the combined weight of the tent and crossbars. Subaru’s 2025 accessories brochure documents one complete setup, a Thule tent for the Outback Wilderness, and no single answer covers every Outback. The five candidates below are models to verify against your own car, not tested winners.

Can any Subaru support a rooftop tent?

Not on a blanket basis. Subaru’s 2025 Outback accessories brochure describes its tent as suitable for vehicles with factory raised roof rails and adequate roof capacity, and tells owners to check the total roof-load limit in the owner’s manual:

“Suitable for use on Subaru vehicles equipped with factory raised roof rails and adequate roof capacity. Consult vehicle owner’s manual for total roof load limit.”

That wording makes the answer conditional. The brochure does not publish one roof-load number for all Outback years and trims, so the figure you need comes from your own vehicle.

#1 Best Overall
WildFinder Rooftop Tent, Hard Shell Roof Top Tent for Jeep SUV Truck Van
  • 100% ALUMINUM ALLOY MATERIAL: Made of high quality aircraft grade aluminum, not easy to aging and thermal expansion and contraction, super durable, can be used for many years. If it is made of plastic, it is easy to leak after winter and summer seasons.
  • STAINLESS STEEL AIR PRESSURE LEVER + POLYESTER FABRIC: Polyester fabric is more comfortable, breathable and waterproof. Strong blackout and privacy. Stainless steel material air pressure rod, durable, will not rust, long service life.
  • RECESSED MARINE PAD + CONDENSATION PAD + COMFORT MATTRESS: the recessed marine pad reduces humidity. The condensation pad prevents water vapor from forming water droplets due to air pressure and temperature difference. 5cm non-deforming mattress provides you with a quality and comfortable resting environment.
  • COMPLETE ACCESSORIES FOR CAMPING: We are equipped with a 7.5 FT Telescoping Ladder, Ladder Organizer, Organizer Bag x10, LED Strip, Shoe Organizer x2, Mesh Windows x3, Mattress x2, and Built-in Mattress x1. These accessories can give you a better camping and outdoor experience. (Luggage Crossbar is not included.)
  • WATERPROOF/SUNPROOF/WINDPROOF/SNOWPROOF:Level 6 Windproof; 99.99% Sun Protection; 5000 MM Rainproof; Level 4 Heavy Snow Protection.

Confirm these inputs before comparing tents

  • Model year, generation and trim. Subaru’s documented tent applies to the Outback Wilderness. Other trims need their own check.
  • Roof-rail configuration. Subaru’s wording refers to factory raised roof rails. Confirm whether your car has them.
  • Total roof-load limit. Find the figure in the owner’s manual for your exact vehicle. Do not use a figure from a forum or a different model year.
  • Crossbar type. Identify whether you have factory integrated crossbars or aftermarket bars, and read their rating.
  • Garage and parking height. Measure your clearance with the tent closed and with any rack in place.

Dynamic load, not parked load, sets the limit

Manufacturers publish two different ratings. A parked or static rating describes what the roof can carry while the car is stationary. The dynamic rating describes what the roof can carry while driving, and it is the number that governs a rooftop tent. A high static figure does not allow you to exceed the dynamic limit.

Three points follow from the evidence:

  • iKamper states that factory integrated crossbars on the Outback are typically rated at 100 lb or less and are unsuitable for its tents. Use the vehicle and rack documentation to verify any alternative setup.
  • Roofnest warns that dynamic roof limits vary by model year, so a tent that suits one year may not suit another.
  • Crossbar mass counts against the same limit. Roofnest notes that its Condor 2 Air leaves a smaller load margin once crossbar weight is included.

Work the margin as a simple sum: tent weight, plus crossbars and rack, plus any other roof-mounted gear, must stay under the dynamic limit for your vehicle. For example, if a manual listed a 150 lb dynamic limit, a 130 lb tent would leave 20 lb for the crossbars, rack and anything else on the roof. That example uses a hypothetical limit to show the method. It is not a figure for any real Outback.

Five candidates to verify for your model year

The evidence does not support a ranking. Each candidate below is listed with the maker’s own specifications and the fitment condition attached to it.

1. Subaru-listed Thule Roof Top Tent (code SOA567C100)

This is the only tent that Subaru lists in its 2025 accessories brochure for the Outback, and it is limited to the Outback Wilderness. The brochure requires the Thule Crossbar Set – Aero Extended. Published specifications are a tent weight of 128 lb, open size of 95 × 56 × 44 in, closed size of 49 × 56 × 11 in, sleeping footprint of 95 × 51 in, and peak height of 40.2 in. This is the strongest documented fit in the evidence, but it still requires a check against your owner’s manual and crossbars. Thule also states that it can recommend only its own rack systems for its tents.

2. Roofnest Falcon 3 Evo Air

Roofnest’s Outback page lists this hardshell tent at 130 lb and says it fits many Outback years, subject to the vehicle’s dynamic rating and crossbar mass. Those are manufacturer claims. Roofnest does not provide an independent test result for the Falcon on an Outback, so confirm the dynamic rating for your year before buying.

3. Roofnest Condor 2 Air

Roofnest lists the Condor 2 Air at 145 lb on its Outback page. The evidence presents it as the choice for buyers who put more weight on interior space. The extra 15 lb compared with the Falcon 3 Evo Air matters: Roofnest itself warns that the remaining margin is smaller once crossbar weight is added. Shell type and crossbar requirements beyond that warning are not stated in the Roofnest material.

4. iKamper Skycamp family

iKamper’s Vehicle Compatibility Guide for the Subaru Outback (dated July 15, 2026) says fit depends on suitable rack capacity and geometry, not on the tent alone. Its FAQ publishes a minimum dynamic rack capacity for each model along with crossbar spacing requirements. The tent’s weight is not stated in the evidence. Confirm the model-specific figures on iKamper’s current FAQ before choosing a rack.

5. iKamper BDV family

The same iKamper guidance covers the BDV family, along with its X-Cover tents, and ties fit to rack capacity and geometry. Model-specific minimum dynamic capacities and tent weights are set out in iKamper’s FAQ rather than in the Outback guide, and the weight is not stated in the evidence used for this article. Do not treat factory bars as an adequate base for any iKamper model.

Rack, crossbar and spacing rules

  • Bar spacing. iKamper specifies at least 30 inches and at most 60 inches between crossbars. Other tent makers set their own spacing.
  • Factory crossbars. iKamper says factory integrated crossbars are typically rated at 100 lb or less and are unsuitable for its tents.
  • Rack compatibility. Thule states it cannot guarantee compatibility of other racks and sets its own installation and spacing restrictions for its tents.
  • Rack capacity by model. Minimum dynamic rack capacity differs by iKamper tent model. Use the figure for your specific tent, not a family average.

Height and clearance

Packed height matters more than most buyers expect. Subaru’s documented Thule tent folds to 11 in tall, but the total height of a roof-mounted setup also includes the roof, the rack and the crossbars. Measure the complete stack against your garage door, carport or parking structure before ordering. Because the tent’s open dimensions and peak height are much larger, check the deployed size against any tree branches or overhead structures at your campsite.

Verification sequence

  1. Record your Outback’s model year, generation, trim and roof-rail type from the vehicle or registration.
  2. Find the total roof-load limit in the owner’s manual for that exact vehicle, and note whether it is a dynamic figure.
  3. Add the tent’s listed weight, the crossbars or rack weight and any other roof items. Confirm the total is below the manual’s limit.
  4. Confirm that the tent maker lists your exact Outback year and trim, and that the rack maker approves the same tent and attachment method.
  5. Check the bar spacing against the tent maker’s requirement, using 30 to 60 inches as the iKamper range where that brand applies.
  6. Measure the closed stack height and the deployed footprint against your parking clearances.

What this guide cannot confirm

  • No candidate has been independently tested for Outback fit. The weights and dimensions come from the manufacturers named above.
  • The evidence does not give a single roof-load limit or fit verdict for every Outback year and trim.
  • Subaru’s accessory listing is from its 2025 brochure. Newer model years may change availability or fitment.
  • Current retail availability and prices for these tents were not verified.
