If you want a Toyota SUV with a V6, the model year matters: the current 2026 Sequoia has a twin-turbo V6 hybrid, while the current 4Runner has turbocharged four-cylinder engines. A recent conventional V6 option is the 2024 4Runner. The published specifications make it possible to compare power, towing and estimated fuel economy—but they do not establish which SUV is most reliable.

Which Toyota SUVs have a V6 engine?

Among the model years covered here, the 2026 Sequoia is the current V6 choice. It pairs a twin-turbo V6 with Toyota’s i-FORCE MAX hybrid system. The 2024 4Runner is a recent example of a conventional, non-hybrid V6 Toyota SUV. The 2026 4Runner is not a V6, and neither is the 2024 Highlander.

These distinctions matter when shopping used or comparing listings: a model name alone does not tell you which engine a particular year has. Check the exact model year, trim and powertrain.

How do the V6 Toyota SUV options compare?

Model year and SUV Engine and output Towing and fuel economy Published starting MSRP
2026 Toyota Sequoia Twin-turbo V6 hybrid; 437 hp and 583 lb.-ft. of torque Up to 9,500 lb. towing; estimated 22 mpg combined $65,725
2024 Toyota 4Runner 4.0-liter V6; 270 hp and 278 lb.-ft. of torque Up to 5,000 lb. towing; listed fuel economy 16 mpg city/19 mpg highway $40,705

Figures are Toyota-published specifications, estimates and starting MSRPs for the stated model years, not local transaction prices. These are different model years and vehicle classes, so the price gap is not a like-for-like value comparison. MSRP also does not account for taxes, fees, financing, fuel costs or maintenance.

2026 Toyota Sequoia: the current V6 option

The Sequoia is the choice in this comparison if you specifically want a current Toyota SUV with a V6 and need full-size capacity or substantial towing. Toyota rates its i-FORCE MAX twin-turbo V6 hybrid at 437 hp and 583 lb.-ft. of torque, and lists towing of up to 9,500 pounds. Its estimated combined fuel economy is 22 mpg.

Its $65,725 starting MSRP is substantially higher than the historical starting MSRP of the 2024 4Runner, but the Sequoia is a different class of SUV and the figures are from different model years. Compare the specific trim and equipment you intend to buy rather than treating those base prices as a direct value verdict. See Toyota’s 2026 Sequoia specifications.

2024 Toyota 4Runner: a recent conventional V6

The 2024 4Runner is a more recent conventional V6 example: its 4.0-liter engine makes 270 hp and 278 lb.-ft. of torque, with towing rated up to 5,000 pounds. Toyota lists fuel economy at 16 mpg city and 19 mpg highway, and its published 2024 starting MSRP was $40,705. That MSRP is historical, not the price of a used 4Runner today. Availability now depends on the used market. Toyota’s 2024 4Runner specifications provide the model-year details.

Does the new Toyota 4Runner have a V6?

No. The 2026 4Runner uses a 2.4-liter turbocharged inline-four, either in a conventional configuration or as an available hybrid. Toyota lists 278 hp and 317 lb.-ft. for the turbo engine; the hybrid is rated up to 326 hp and 465 lb.-ft. Toyota lists estimated combined fuel economy up to 23 mpg and seating for up to seven on its 2026 model page. These figures describe the 2026 4Runner, not a V6. Check Toyota’s 2026 4Runner page and 2026 4Runner brochure for powertrain details.

Is the Toyota Highlander a V6 SUV?

Not for the 2024 model year. Toyota describes the 2024 Highlander with either a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder or a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid. Do not assume an older Highlander’s engine configuration applies to a 2024 vehicle; verify the year and powertrain in the listing. Toyota’s 2024 Highlander specifications identify its available powertrains.

How to judge power, towing and value

Start with what the SUV needs to do, then compare matching model years and trims. A published horsepower figure is not a towing rating, and a higher starting price does not by itself indicate better or worse value.

  • Confirm the engine: Check the exact year and trim. In this comparison, only the 2026 Sequoia and 2024 4Runner are V6 models.
  • Match towing capacity to the load: The published maximums are up to 9,500 pounds for the 2026 Sequoia and up to 5,000 pounds for the 2024 4Runner. Verify the rating for the exact configuration and ensure it meets the trailer’s loaded weight and your towing needs.
  • Consider fuel use alongside power: Compare the stated fuel-economy figures in context. The Sequoia figure is an estimated combined mpg value; the 2024 4Runner listing gives separate city and highway figures.
  • Compare actual purchase costs: Starting MSRP is not a dealer quote or total ownership cost. For a used 2024 4Runner, condition, mileage and asking price vary by vehicle.

Can one of these be called the most reliable?

The specifications cited here do not provide model-year-specific independent reliability data, so they cannot support a reliability ranking or a claim that one is the most reliable. To compare long-term reliability, look for independent data that identifies the model years studied, its methodology and sample limits. For an individual used 4Runner, the vehicle’s maintenance records, inspection findings and condition are more directly relevant than a general model label.
