Use the lowest RON grade that your vehicle manufacturer approves. If the owner’s manual or fuel flap permits a minimum of RON95, RON95 is suitable for normal driving and usually costs less, particularly when you qualify for BUDI95. If the manufacturer specifies a minimum of RON97, use RON97; Toyota’s 2026 GR Corolla brochure, for example, specifies “Minimum RON 97” for both automatic and manual variants. Do not choose RON97 on the assumption that it universally increases power, mileage or engine cleanliness.
What RON95 and RON97 mean
RON is the Research Octane Number used to classify petrol’s resistance to engine knock. RON95 and RON97 are different fuel grades, with RON97 carrying the higher octane rating. The number is important because an engine is designed around a minimum octane requirement. Running fuel below that requirement can allow knock under conditions the manufacturer considered when calibrating the engine.

A higher rating is not automatically a performance upgrade. It is a specification that may be required for a particular combustion system, compression ratio, turbocharger calibration or operating strategy. Whether a vehicle gains any measurable economy or power from moving above its approved minimum depends on that specific vehicle. No authoritative, model-independent statistic establishes that RON97 always improves fuel economy, power or engine cleanliness.

| Question | Use RON95 | Use RON97 |
|---|---|---|
| What does the manual or fuel flap specify? | It permits RON95 or gives a minimum below RON97. | It states a minimum of RON97. |
| What is the priority? | Normal driving at the lowest approved cost. | Meeting a documented manufacturer requirement. |
| Does BUDI95 apply? | Eligible Malaysians can buy subsidised RON95 through the programme, subject to the monthly limit. | BUDI95 does not turn RON97 into a subsidised grade; RON97 is priced separately. |
| What evidence supports a performance benefit? | There is no need to pay for a higher grade when the manufacturer allows RON95. | The justification is the vehicle’s specification, not a universal promise of extra power or mileage. |
How Malaysian petrol prices and BUDI95 change the calculation
Malaysia’s BUDI MADANI RON95 (BUDI95) programme began on 30 September 2025. The Ministry of Finance announced subsidised RON95 at RM1.99 per litre, with a 300-litre monthly eligibility limit and a subsidy benefit of up to RM183 per eligible individual per month. The same opening-period announcement set non-subsidised RON95 at RM2.60 per litre and RON97 at RM3.21 per litre.

Those figures describe the programme’s opening period, not a permanent pump-price list. The Ministry calculates retail prices under the Automatic Pricing Mechanism (APM), so prices can move with global oil markets. A Ministry table for 25–31 December 2025 listed RON97 at RM3.16 per litre, non-subsidised RON95 at RM2.56 and subsidised BUDI95 at RM1.99.
A Ministry notice issued in September 2026 for 1–7 October 2026 reported a five-sen-per-litre decrease for both unsubsidised RON97 and unsubsidised RON95. It did not make the earlier figures a permanent reference point. Check the newest Ministry of Finance weekly announcement before treating any number as the price in force on your refuelling date.

| Period or announcement | Subsidised RON95 (BUDI95) | Unsubsidised RON95 | RON97 | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Opening period from 30 September 2025 | RM1.99/litre | RM2.60/litre | RM3.21/litre | Rates announced by the Ministry of Finance when BUDI95 began. |
| 25–31 December 2025 | RM1.99/litre | RM2.56/litre | RM3.16/litre | Weekly APM-based table; valid only for that stated week. |

What the opening-period gap means at the pump
Using the opening-period figures as an illustration, the difference between RON97 at RM3.21 and subsidised RON95 at RM1.99 was RM1.22 per litre. A 40-litre fill would therefore differ by RM48.80, while a 60-litre fill would differ by RM73.20. These are arithmetic examples based on the 30 September 2025 announcement, not current quotations.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor the 25–31 December 2025 table, the RON97-to-subsidised-RON95 gap was RM1.17 per litre. The same 40-litre and 60-litre fills would differ by RM46.80 and RM70.20 respectively. The gap between RON97 and non-subsidised RON95 in that week was RM0.60 per litre, or RM24 for 40 litres. Your actual difference depends on the week’s APM price and whether your purchase is eligible for the subsidy.

Check your car before choosing a grade
The vehicle’s own requirement outranks general advice about engine type, age or driving style. A turbocharged badge, a high-output variant or a premium position in a model range does not by itself prove that RON97 is mandatory. Conversely, assuming that every version of a familiar model accepts RON95 can be wrong when a special variant has a different calibration.
- Read the owner’s manual. Look for “fuel,” “petrol,” “octane,” “RON,” or “recommended octane rating.” Record the minimum value, not merely the grade shown in an example.
- Check the fuel flap and filler-neck label. Some vehicles print the minimum RON beside the cap. Treat a clear minimum instruction as part of the manufacturer’s operating specification.
- Confirm the exact variant and transmission. Model names can cover several engines and gearboxes. The 2026 Toyota GR Corolla brochure, for example, lists “Recommended Octane Rating | Minimum RON 97” for both its automatic and manual variants.
- Follow the stricter instruction when documents differ. If the manual and a label appear inconsistent, ask the manufacturer’s local service channel to identify the correct specification for your vehicle identification number rather than guessing.
- Keep the requirement separate from the price decision. First establish the minimum acceptable RON. Only then compare BUDI95 eligibility, weekly prices and payment convenience.
When RON95 is the right choice
Your manual explicitly permits RON95
If the manufacturer states that RON95 meets the minimum requirement, RON95 is the correct fuel for ordinary use. You are not required to buy RON97 simply because it has a larger number. Staying at the approved minimum avoids paying for a specification your engine does not require.
You qualify for BUDI95
For an eligible Malaysian, subsidised RON95 can materially reduce the cost per litre. The programme uses MyKad and imposes a 300-litre monthly limit. At the opening-period prices, the maximum stated monthly subsidy benefit was RM183 per eligible person, which corresponds to the RM0.61-per-litre difference between RM2.60 unsubsidised RON95 and RM1.99 subsidised RON95 across 300 litres.

Quota is a monthly allowance, not a guarantee that every vehicle can be filled without tracking usage. A household with several vehicles should monitor how much of the eligible person’s allowance has been used. Once the allowance or eligibility conditions no longer apply, the price comparison changes to the applicable unsubsidised RON95 and RON97 rates.

Your driving is normal for the vehicle
Use the grade approved for the conditions described by the manufacturer. Everyday commuting, errands and highway travel do not create a general requirement to move to RON97 when the manual already permits RON95. If the manufacturer publishes special fuel instructions for a particular operating condition, follow those instructions rather than substituting internet rules of thumb.
When RON97 is necessary
The manufacturer states a minimum RON97
A minimum is not the same as a suggestion to experiment. If the manual or fuel label says RON97, use RON97 as the normal fuel. The GR Corolla example is explicit: Toyota Malaysia’s 2026 brochure specifies a minimum RON97 rating for automatic and manual variants. That documented requirement is enough to settle the choice for those vehicles, regardless of whether a cheaper grade is available.
The vehicle documentation describes a variant-specific requirement
Use the requirement for the exact engine and market specification. A different engine, software calibration or special-edition variant can carry a different minimum from a visually similar car. Do not transfer the GR Corolla’s requirement to another Toyota, another Corolla version or another turbocharged vehicle.
You are resolving uncertainty, not chasing a claimed gain
When the documentation is missing or unreadable, identify the vehicle and obtain the manufacturer’s specification before making a long-term choice. Buying RON97 temporarily while confirming the requirement is a conservative spending decision, but it is not evidence that every car benefits from the higher grade.

Is RON97 worth paying extra for?
It is worth the extra cost when it is the manufacturer’s minimum requirement. In that case, the price is part of operating the vehicle as designed. It may also be a personal choice for a car that permits RON95, but the available evidence does not support presenting that choice as a guaranteed economy, power or cleanliness improvement.
For a RON95-approved vehicle, compare the actual cost with a clear purpose. If your only reason is that RON97 “feels premium,” there is no model-independent result to rely on. If you are evaluating a specific car for a specific use, look for that vehicle’s own manufacturer documentation or controlled, model-specific testing; do not generalise from a different engine.
Fuel economy is also affected by route, traffic, tyre pressure, load, weather, maintenance and driving style. Without a controlled comparison on the same vehicle and route, a change in consumption cannot be attributed confidently to the RON grade. Treat any one driver’s anecdote as an observation, not a universal rule.

Eligibility and identification
The Ministry’s September 2026 notice said eligible Malaysians could continue buying subsidised fuel through BUDI95 using MyKad, subject to the monthly limit. Eligibility is therefore a programme condition, not something created by selecting a particular station, payment card or loyalty account.

Monthly limit
The announced limit is 300 litres per month for an eligible individual. The maximum benefit of up to RM183 per month was tied to the opening-period price difference and the full 300-litre allowance. If prices change under the APM, the amount saved per litre and the equivalent monthly benefit can change even though the quota remains the stated programme limit.
Digital payment options
The official BUDI95 announcement named TNG eWallet, Setel by Petronas and CaltexGo as digital options. Availability, identity checks and the way a particular option displays a balance can change, so follow the current programme instructions at the point of purchase. These tools help with payment or eligibility handling; they do not change your vehicle’s required RON grade.
What happens when you are not subsidised
If you are not eligible, have exhausted the monthly allowance or buy a grade outside the subsidy, use the applicable unsubsidised price. Do not compare subsidised RON95 with RON97 unless the person and transaction actually qualify for the subsidised rate. Mixing those categories can make the apparent premium look larger or smaller than the amount you will really pay.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Choosing by engine label alone. “Turbo,” “performance” or “premium” does not establish a minimum. Read the vehicle-specific manual.
- Confusing recommended and minimum ratings. A document may show a preferred rating and a minimum rating. Use the stated minimum as the compliance threshold, then follow any additional manufacturer conditions.
- Treating a weekly price as permanent. APM prices are revised with market movements. Attach the date and week to every price comparison.
- Assuming all RON95 is subsidised. BUDI95 eligibility, MyKad identification and the 300-litre monthly limit determine whether the subsidised price applies.
- Carrying one model’s requirement to another. The GR Corolla’s RON97 minimum is evidence for that documented variant, not a rule for all Corolla models or all turbocharged cars.
- Promising universal gains from RON97. No authoritative general statistic establishes an across-the-board improvement in mileage, power or cleanliness.
- Ignoring the payment record. Keep the date, litres purchased and whether the transaction used BUDI95. This makes it easier to track the monthly quota and audit an unexpectedly high bill.
- Using additives to answer an octane question. Injector cleaners and other maintenance products do not substitute for buying the RON grade specified by the manufacturer.
A repeatable decision process at the station
- Identify the required minimum. Read the manual or fuel-flap label before opening the pump nozzle.
- Reject any grade below that minimum. If the requirement is RON97, select RON97 even when RON95 is cheaper or subsidised.
- Check BUDI95 status. For a RON95-approved car, confirm that your MyKad-linked eligibility and monthly allowance are available.
- Read the pump’s current price. Record the displayed price and date; do not rely on an old screenshot or a previous week’s table.
- Choose the lowest compliant grade. If RON95 is allowed, compare subsidised or unsubsidised RON95 with your budget. If RON97 is required, buy RON97.
- Save the receipt or transaction record. Note litres and total cost so you can monitor the monthly quota and compare like-for-like fills later.
Questions to settle before a long trip or a new-car handover
- Is the number printed on the fuel flap a minimum, a recommendation or a warning about a different fuel type?
- Does the manual specify a different grade for a particular engine, transmission or market?
- Will the journey use enough fuel to approach the 300-litre BUDI95 monthly limit?
- Are you comparing the same price category—subsidised with subsidised, or unsubsidised with unsubsidised?
- Have you written down the date of the Ministry price announcement or the pump display?
Bottom line for Malaysian drivers
RON95 is the sensible default only when your vehicle documentation permits it, and BUDI95 can make it the lowest-cost compliant option for eligible Malaysians. RON97 is the correct choice when the manufacturer sets RON97 as the minimum, as Toyota’s 2026 GR Corolla brochure does for both listed variants. Because Malaysian prices move under the APM and BUDI95 applies only under stated eligibility and quota rules, make the decision in this order: verify the vehicle’s minimum, verify subsidy status, then check the dated pump price.
