For any trip, check both addresses in the app, request same-time quotes for the same route, and verify that the vehicle and assistance features meet your needs.
This US-focused guide explains how the services differ, what the current evidence actually shows, and how to decide between a driverless ride and a conventional rideshare booking.

What counts as a robotaxi, and how is it different from rideshare?
A robotaxi is a passenger service in which an automated-driving system performs the driving task within a defined operating area. The passenger does not hire a person to drive. The experience still varies by operator and market, however.
Fully autonomous service
Waymo describes its rider-only trips as fully autonomous, with no human driver in the front seat. The vehicle, rather than a rideshare driver, handles steering, braking, routing and normal driving decisions. Service can still be interrupted by technical, safety or weather limits.

Autonomous trips arranged through a rideshare app
Uber describes autonomous trips as a matching preference rather than a ride that a customer directly books as “autonomous.” In early-market deployments, an autonomous-vehicle specialist may ride in the vehicle to monitor the system and help if a trip cannot be completed. The exact experience depends on the vehicle and market, so follow the instructions shown in the app and on the in-car screen.

A conventional UberX, Lyft Standard or similar trip has a human driver in control. That driver can often make an immediate judgment about a blocked driveway, unusual passenger request or road closure, although human driving also introduces its own risks and variability. A robotaxi may instead need remote or in-vehicle assistance, a reroute, or a safe stop.

What the available safety evidence shows
Safety comparisons are meaningful only when the mileage period, geography, crash definition, exposure denominator and benchmark method are visible. A headline such as “robotaxis are safer” can overstate what a particular dataset proves.
Waymo’s published rider-only mileage and benchmark
Waymo’s Safety Impact page reports 271.3 million rider-only miles through June 2026. The page compares crash outcomes with human-driving benchmarks built from state police crash records and vehicle-miles-traveled data in areas where Waymo’s rider-only service operates at scale. The current comparison covers Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Austin, and uses a dynamic adjustment for differences in where the automated vehicle drives.

Those are Waymo’s operator-generated results, not an independent, controlled head-to-head test of every robotaxi against Uber or Lyft drivers. The page’s geography and operating mix should be read as part of the result, rather than treated as a nationwide average.

Why crash definitions change the result
Waymo says automated-vehicle reporting captures physical contacts that may not meet the threshold for a police report in a human-driven crash. The same page cites a 2023 NHTSA estimate that 60% of property-damage crashes and 32% of injury crashes are not reported to police. Comparing a dataset that records every detected contact with a human dataset based largely on police reports can therefore make the two rates look different even before driving performance is considered.
The appropriate denominator is events per mile, not a raw count of incidents. A fair comparison also aligns local roads, traffic, speed, time of day and other driving conditions. Waymo notes that its operating cities do not have appreciable snowfall, so these results do not establish performance in regular snow conditions.
How to interpret the evidence as a rider
- Treat the mileage period and four-city geography as boundaries on the claim.
- Ask whether a reported event is a police-reportable crash, a physical contact, an injury event or another category.
- Check whether rates are calculated per mile and whether the human benchmark uses comparable roads and conditions.
- Do not convert an operator’s benchmark into a claim about every automated-driving company or every rideshare driver.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s David Zuby is quoted on Waymo’s safety page saying: “By making detailed information about crashes and miles driven publicly accessible, Waymo’s transparency will not only support independent research but foster public trust. We hope other companies developing and deploying automated driving systems follow suit.” The statement supports transparency; it is not an independent safety verdict.
Is a robotaxi cheaper than an Uber or Lyft?
There is no reliable nationwide rule. The only useful answer for a specific trip is the fare displayed for the same origin, destination and time in each available app.
The dated San Francisco comparison
Obi analyzed fare offers in San Francisco from March 25 through April 25, 2025. It retained 705 comparison points where Waymo, Lyft Standard and UberX all returned both a quote and an estimated arrival time. The reported mean fares were:

In that sample, Waymo’s mean was 31% above UberX and 41% above Lyft Standard. The figures are historical quoted fares from one city and one month. They are not today’s prices, a measure of total service quality, or evidence that Waymo is always more expensive.

What changes a live quote
Waymo says the app presents the price before booking and calculates it from the most direct route. It also warns that prices may be higher during busy periods such as nights and weekends. Tesla’s support page says its app displays a fare estimate before confirmation and that introductory pricing can change. Neither statement guarantees a lower fare than conventional rideshare.

- the total fare, not just a base estimate;
- the pickup ETA and any difference in waiting time;
- tolls, booking fees or other displayed charges;
- whether your group requires a second vehicle because of capacity.
Prices can change while you are checking. A quote is therefore a decision-time fact, while a published average is historical context.
Where can you actually get a robotaxi?
“Available in a city” does not mean available at every address. Robotaxi operators use service polygons, approved roads and staged rider access. Both the pickup and destination must be accepted by the app.

Waymo’s listed US markets
Waymo’s current FAQ lists Dallas, Denver, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, Orlando, Phoenix, San Antonio, San Diego, Tampa and the San Francisco Bay Area. Access is not uniform: some cities allow anyone to ride, while others are still gradually welcoming riders. Waymo says Austin and Atlanta trips are available through Uber rather than as a uniformly open standalone service.

Waymo’s dated Help Center announcements document staged launches and expansions during 2026, including Denver, Tampa, San Diego, Las Vegas and additions within existing markets. Because boundaries and eligibility can change, use the live trip screen instead of relying on a city list. The announcements are collected at Waymo Help.
Uber’s autonomous matching
Uber says autonomous vehicles operate only in selected areas where the technology is ready and approved. Riders enable the autonomous-vehicle preference to increase the chance of a match; Uber’s described flow does not currently offer a guaranteed direct autonomous-ride booking. If no eligible vehicle is available, the request can be matched to a conventional ride or remain unmatched according to the app’s options.
Tesla’s listed service areas
Tesla Support lists limited robotaxi service areas in Miami, Orlando, Tampa, Austin, Dallas and Houston, with operating hours varying by area. The current details and fare-estimate explanation are at Tesla Robotaxi support. A listed market still does not establish that your neighborhood, airport terminal or hotel entrance is inside the active boundary.
How to check and book the right service
- Enter both exact addresses. Use the actual pickup entrance, terminal, hotel driveway or building pin rather than only the city name.
- Confirm the app accepts the trip. A metropolitan-area listing is not proof that both endpoints are inside today’s operating polygon.
- Request conventional quotes at the same time. Enter the identical route in Uber and Lyft, then note fare, ETA and displayed fees.
- Check rider access. Some robotaxi markets are open to everyone; others are onboarding riders gradually or expose autonomous rides only through a partner app.
- Review capacity and passenger requirements. Count riders and luggage, and arrange a compliant child or booster seat before requesting a vehicle.
- Read the vehicle instructions. Match the vehicle details to the booking and follow any screen, pickup-zone or seat-belt directions.
- Keep a fallback. If the app removes the option, weather worsens or the trip is time-critical, request a conventional ride or another approved transport option.
What a driverless ride may feel like
Pickup and identification
Because there is no driver to wave to, the app and vehicle identification matter more. Confirm the displayed vehicle details before entering, use the designated pickup point and follow the in-car instructions. Uber says some autonomous vehicles have an in-car screen; the available interface varies by vehicle.
Capacity and child seats
Waymo says its vehicles accommodate up to four riders. Families traveling with a child under eight must bring and properly install an appropriate car seat or booster; those children cannot sit in the front. A larger party may need two vehicles, which changes the total cost and coordination.

Human assistance
Waymo says riders can contact support through the car or by phone after a collision. Uber says an AV specialist may be present during early deployment and that rider support is available through the app. These are service descriptions, not a promise that a person will be physically present on every trip.
Stops, reroutes and unusual situations
A human driver can often negotiate a blocked driveway or interpret a hand signal immediately. An automated vehicle may instead ask you to follow a new pickup point, wait for remote assistance, reroute or end the trip at a safe location. Stay seated, keep the doors closed until instructed, and use the in-car or app support channel rather than trying to direct the vehicle yourself.
Weather and service interruptions
Waymo describes service as available around the clock in current service areas, but its Help Center says a ride can be unavailable because of safety considerations, technical issues, severe or inclement weather, or a public-health issue. “Around the clock” therefore describes intended operating availability, not a guarantee that every request will be accepted in every condition.

Which option fits common trip situations?
Both endpoints are clearly inside an active robotaxi area
Request a live robotaxi quote and compare it with UberX or Lyft Standard. Choose the robotaxi when the driverless cabin is valuable to you and the fare, ETA, capacity and support arrangements fit the trip. Choose conventional rideshare when its quote or pickup time is better, or when you prefer a human driver for this journey.
The trip involves an airport, event or other time-critical arrival
Check the exact terminal or venue entrance rather than assuming the city is covered. Compare pickup ETAs, allow for a possible service boundary or reroute, and keep a conventional option available if missing the arrival window would be costly.
You are traveling with young children or a large group
Verify the seat count and bring the required child restraint. If your party exceeds four riders in a Waymo vehicle, price two vehicles before booking. Do not assume a child seat, accessible configuration or extra luggage space is supplied unless the app and operator explicitly confirm it.
Snow, severe storms or an unusual road closure is possible
Expect availability to be conditional. Waymo’s published safety comparison does not establish performance in regular snowfall, and its help policy allows suspension for severe weather. A conventional rideshare may also be delayed or unavailable, so check the live status immediately before departure.
The route leaves the robotaxi polygon
Use conventional rideshare or another transport mode for the whole trip unless the app explicitly offers a permitted transfer. Do not rely on a general city listing to assume that a cross-boundary ride will be accepted.
What to do if the vehicle cannot complete the trip
- Follow the vehicle’s safety instructions. Remain secured and wait for the next prompt unless there is an immediate emergency.
- Use in-car or app support. Waymo directs riders to support through the car or phone after a collision; Uber directs riders to in-app support.
- Confirm the proposed resolution. The system may reroute, request a different pickup point, dispatch assistance or end the ride safely.
- Document the trip details. Save the booking, time, location and any displayed message for support.
- Rebook only after checking the boundary and conditions. A second request may fail for the same weather, road or service-area reason.
A practical decision rule
Use a robotaxi when both endpoints are accepted, the live quote and ETA are acceptable, the passenger and child-seat requirements are satisfied, and you are comfortable with the operator’s assistance model. Use conventional rideshare when the robotaxi is outside its polygon, unavailable at the needed time, unsuitable for your group or weather, or not worth its quoted price. Neither mode wins every trip; the correct choice is the one that meets the specific journey’s coverage, safety-information, cost and support requirements.
