The Rob Woffinden Classic returned to Pinjar Park Speedway on 4 February 2023 after a three-year pause, with a 16-rider solo field, a sidecar shootout and Outlaw Kart races on the announced program. The event honours Rob Woffinden, the British speedway rider and volunteer who helped build the original track and was the father of Tai Woffinden.
What the 2023 preview announced
PerthNow’s preview, published on 3 February 2023, described the Classic’s return after three years without an edition during the COVID-19 pandemic. It reported that Tai Woffinden, a WA-raised three-time world champion, was seeking a fourth Classic victory. The planned field included 16 Australian and international riders, among them under-21 world champion Jaimon Lidsey and Europe-based Australians Cameron Heeps and Ryan Douglas.
The preview said the event would use a format new to Perth in 25 years:
- Sixteen riders would score points over 20 heats.
- The top four after the heats would qualify directly for a six-lap final.
- The next four would race in a B Final, with its first- and second-place finishers taking the remaining spots in the final.
The announced program also included a Top 5 Sidecar Shootout and races for WA Outlaw Kart competitors. PerthNow listed the first race for 7pm on Saturday, 4 February, at Pinjar Park off Neerabup Road; that was the schedule for the 2023 event, not a current event time.

Why the Classic bears Rob Woffinden’s name
The Speedway Motorcycle Club of WA’s 2020–21 program says Rob Woffinden was among the volunteers who built Pinjar Park’s original 142-metre track. He later helped in the pits as his son Tai began racing. Rob died in January 2010, aged 47; PerthNow reported that he had battled cancer for a long time. The Classic is held in his memory.
The event’s history also includes Tai’s 2019–20 victory, which the club program identifies as making him the Classic’s first three-time winner. The club’s results page for the 19 January 2019 edition records Tai as the 500cc solo final winner; Clayton Mills and Steve McQueen won the 1000cc sidecar event.

What Tai Woffinden and the organiser said
In PerthNow’s 2023 preview, Tai described the return as a chance to promote his father’s event: “It’s good to be back in Australia… and to promote my dad’s event – it hasn’t been run for three years,” he said. He also said he was looking forward to “putting on a show for the fans.”
Graeme Sinden, identified in the preview as an organising committee member, said the Bennco Group-sponsored event would feature music, bars, food outlets, live screens and entertainment. He called it “a motorcycle speedway event that Perth has not seen for a long time.” These were statements about the planned 2023 event.
The 2024 edition was a separate event
Motorcycling WA’s annual report records that the next edition took place on 3 February 2024. Justin Sedgmen won its six-man, five-lap final, ahead of Jaimon Lidsey and Tai Woffinden. That result belongs to the 2024 Classic, not the edition previewed for 4 February 2023.
