The Rivian R2 is a five-seat, two-row electric SUV that has begun customer deliveries in the U.S. Its Performance trim is available now, while the less expensive Premium and Standard trims are scheduled for late 2026 and 2027, respectively. Against the Tesla Model Y, the R2’s strongest published advantages are cargo capacity, towing capability and a more adventure-oriented design; the Model Y leads on range in the cited comparison and rides more smoothly.
What is the Rivian R2?
The R2 is Rivian’s midsize electric SUV, with two rows and seating for five. It is positioned as a smaller, more affordable alternative to the company’s R1 vehicles and a direct competitor to electric SUVs such as the Tesla Model Y. That does not mean every R2 version is available now. The current U.S. product page lists three trims with different starting prices and delivery timing. Rivian notes that pricing, options and production features can change, so check its live R2 page before placing an order.

Prices above are Rivian’s current listed starting prices, not a guarantee of the final transaction price; taxes, fees, options and destination charges can affect what a buyer pays. In a September 2026 comparison, AP/Edmunds listed destination-included R2 prices from $46,485 for Standard to $59,485 for Performance. How far can the R2 go, and how does it charge?
Range depends on the trim. Rivian lists 330 miles estimated for Premium, while AP/Edmunds reports R2 versions ranging from 275 miles for Standard to 345 miles for Standard Long Range, with most other versions at 330 miles. The Standard range display on Rivian’s current page is blank, so confirm the estimate for the exact configuration you are considering rather than treating one R2 figure as universal.
For context, AP/Edmunds reports Model Y estimates from 294 miles for an all-wheel-drive base version to 357 miles for rear-wheel-drive Premium. These are figures for particular versions, not a like-for-like comparison of every R2 and Model Y. In the publication’s tests, Edmunds recorded 304 miles for an R2 Performance against its stated 330-mile estimate, and 337 miles for a Model Y base rear-wheel-drive model. Rivian says every R2 has a native NACS charge port and access to more than 21,000 Tesla Superchargers across the U.S. and Canada. The company also claims that a DC fast charger can add 150 miles in 15 minutes or charge from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes. AP/Edmunds found Tesla charged slightly faster in its comparison. The result reflects that publication’s comparison and conditions, not a promise that every Model Y will charge faster than every R2 in every situation.

The capacity and towing figures favor the R2 on paper, but towing capacity is not the same as practical range while towing. For the R2, Rivian ties the 4,400-pound rating to the Tow Package. What are the R2’s space and off-road specifications?
Rivian lists 90.1 cubic feet of total storage, including 79.4 cubic feet with the rear seats folded and 28.7 cubic feet in the rear cargo area. It also lists 9.6 inches of ground clearance. The company’s water-fording figure is 19.7 inches under its stated closed-door and storage conditions; it should not be read as a general invitation to drive through water. Rivian R2 specifications

Those numbers, together with the R2’s adventure-oriented equipment, point to a more utility- and outdoor-focused brief than a straightforward commuter crossover. However, the cited comparison does not include an independent off-road test, so the specifications alone do not establish how the R2 performs on a particular trail.

AP/Edmunds reports that both SUVs offer driver aids, phone charging, large touchscreens, Google-based navigation and camera systems. It notes that the R2 includes a driver display and that its touchscreen felt more responsive during Edmunds’ testing; that responsiveness is a subjective test observation, not a measured specification. For passengers, the comparison favors the Model Y for a smoother ride and the R2 for rear-seat room and headroom. The Model Y’s optional third row may matter to buyers who need occasional extra seats, but raising it cuts into cargo space.
Which SUV should you choose?
- Consider the R2 if cargo space, a higher stated towing rating, rear-seat room or adventure-focused capability matter more than maximizing range. Confirm the trim’s delivery timing and whether it has the Tow Package if you need the full towing rating.
- Consider the Model Y if the longer-range versions and smoother ride highlighted in the comparison better match your priorities, or if an available third row is useful.
- Compare exact versions before deciding. Match drivetrain and trim, check whether the quoted price includes destination, and compare the vehicle’s actual equipment and delivery timing. A headline price or range without those details can be misleading.
What is not yet established?
Rivian’s current page does not provide a Standard range estimate, and the cited material does not establish a confirmed European retail launch schedule, long-term reliability, or independent road-test results for every R2 trim. For purchase decisions, use the live Rivian configuration for current specifications and availability rather than filling gaps with older launch-era estimates.
