On the evidence publicly documented by their manufacturers, three models meet that description: the McLaren F1, Gordon Murray Automotive T.50 and the Gordon Murray Special Vehicles S1 announced in 2026. The first two are established road-car programs; the S1 is a limited, road-focused announcement whose production and individual-market registration are still future matters.
The list is deliberately strict. A central cockpit is not enough if the car is a track-only machine, and a car is not counted when the available official material confirms its road identity but does not clearly confirm the central driving position.

What qualifies as a middle-of-the-cabin steering wheel?
For this list, “middle” means a central driving position: the driver’s seat and steering wheel sit on the longitudinal centerline of the passenger compartment. That is different from a left- or right-hand-drive car with a slightly offset seat, and different again from a single-seat racing car whose cockpit happens to be narrow and centrally located.

The confirmed models at a glance
These are the models for which the available manufacturer material supports both a central driver and a road-going purpose. The wording in the status column matters: the S1 is an announced 2026 program, not a claim that every example has already been delivered or registered.
| Model | Road-use status | Central-seat evidence | Production context | Published powertrain or performance figures |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| McLaren F1 | Established road car and supercar | McLaren’s F1 history describes its central driving position | 106 F1 supercars produced, according to McLaren; year not specified on the accessed page | Not stated in the cited material for this comparison |
| Gordon Murray Automotive T.50 | Road-going supercar | Central driver with two passenger seats flanking it | Highly limited customer production; launch material does not state a total in the cited extract | 997 kg dry weight; 3.9-litre V12, 670 PS; manufacturer specifications from 2020 |
| Gordon Murray Special Vehicles S1 | Announced road-focused touring supercar, revealed in August 2026 | Central driving position and three-seat cabin | Planned limit of 64 cars worldwide; announcement-era figure | 4.2-litre naturally aspirated Cosworth V12, up to 690 PS, six-speed manual |
McLaren F1: the original modern road-car reference
McLaren’s own retrospective identifies the F1 as a road car and specifically highlights its central driving position: the driver sits on the centerline rather than behind one front wheel. That arrangement made the F1 the defining modern example of a road supercar built around a centered driver instead of a conventional two-seat layout.
McLaren reports that 106 F1 supercars were produced. That is a manufacturer-reported production count, and the company’s page does not specify a publication year for the figure. It is best understood as the total for the F1 supercar family rather than a count of currently registered cars.

The central seat changes the driver’s relationship with the car. Forward sight lines are symmetrical, the steering column does not force the driver to one side, and the dashboard and controls can be organized around the person who is actually driving. Those are design consequences of the layout, not evidence that every centered car has identical handling or ergonomics.

Gordon Murray Automotive T.50: a central seat engineered as the starting point
Gordon Murray Automotive explicitly calls the T.50 a road-going supercar and puts the driver in the middle with one passenger seat on each side. The manufacturer presents that architecture as the foundation of the car rather than a styling detail. As Professor Gordon Murray put it in the company’s launch material: “At the heart of T.50 ethos is the ultimate, sensory-rich driving experience, which all starts with the central driving position.”
The same 2020 launch material gives the T.50 a manufacturer-stated dry weight of 997 kg and a 3.9-litre V12 rated at 670 PS. Those are published specifications, not independent test measurements. The company also says the carbon-fibre three-seat arrangement weighs 13 kg in total, an unusually specific figure that shows how extensively the central layout was treated as an engineering system.

A conventional supercar can package two occupants without moving the driver from the side of the cabin. The T.50 instead reserves the center for the person controlling the car and places the two passenger seats outside that line. This can give the driver a consistent visual reference over the nose and removes the need to tailor the primary driving position to left- or right-hand traffic. It also creates different compromises for passenger access, dashboard packaging and regulatory equipment, which is why central-seat road cars remain rare.

Gordon Murray Special Vehicles S1: the 2026 announced successor in spirit
Gordon Murray Special Vehicles revealed the S1 in August 2026 as a road-focused touring supercar. Its announcement says the car retains a central driving position and a three-seat cabin, preserving the basic seating idea established by the T.50 while aiming at long-distance road driving rather than a circuit-only mission.
The announced specification is a 4.2-litre naturally aspirated Cosworth V12 producing up to 690 PS, driving through a six-speed manual transmission. Production is planned to be limited to 64 cars worldwide. “Planned” is important: the announcement supports the model’s intended road use and layout, but it should not be read as proof that all 64 cars have been built, delivered or approved for registration in every jurisdiction.
What the S1 announcement does—and does not—establish
The official release directly supports three points: a central driver, three seats and a road-focused mission. It does not provide a universal registration guarantee. Buyers would still need to confirm the compliance package and documentation for the market in which a specific S1 is to be used.

McLaren Speedtail
The Speedtail is unquestionably presented by McLaren as a road car, and its official model page states a maximum speed of 403 km/h (250 mph). However, the accessible official material used for this list does not expose a clear statement confirming the central driving position. Because the layout is the defining criterion here, the Speedtail remains a plausible candidate rather than a confirmed entry.
That distinction prevents a performance number from being mistaken for cockpit evidence. The model page is McLaren’s Speedtail listing; a definitive count should wait for explicit primary-source wording about the driver’s seat and steering wheel.
Gordon Murray Special Vehicles S1 LM
The S1 announcement calls the S1 LM “road-legal,” but the central-position wording on that page describes the S1 and does not clearly verify the cockpit layout of the separate S1 LM model. It should therefore not be presented as a separately confirmed central-seat supercar without model-specific official evidence.

McLaren Solus GT
The Solus GT is the clear exclusion. McLaren describes it as a single-seat track car and explicitly says it “does not adhere to road or racing regulations.” Its centered cockpit cannot satisfy a road-legal list, so it belongs in a track-car discussion instead.
McLaren’s model information is at the Solus GT page.

Why central driving positions remain rare
Most road cars place the driver to one side because traffic rules, steering hardware, pedal boxes, airbags and dashboard controls can be shared across left- and right-hand-drive markets. A centerline driver requires a different body structure and a cabin designed around three occupants rather than two. The engineering is possible, but the business case is difficult when production volumes are low and certification costs must be spread across very few cars.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe benefits are correspondingly specialized. A centered driver gets the same sightline regardless of whether the car is driven on the left or right side of a road, and the steering wheel is aligned with the vehicle’s center rather than offset toward a door. The disadvantages can include more complicated entry and exit, unusual passenger access and limited practicality for owners who expect a conventional grand-touring interior.
How to interpret “road-legal” when shopping or researching
- Identify the exact model and specification. A road-focused family can include a track derivative with different certification, as the S1 and S1 LM naming illustrates.
- Check the manufacturer’s compliance documents. Confirm the emissions, lighting, noise and safety equipment required for the country where the car will be registered.
- Separate production intent from delivered status. A planned production limit, such as 64 S1 cars, is not a registration record or proof that every example exists.
- Verify the cockpit layout from primary material. Performance figures, a central-looking dashboard or photographs alone should not replace an explicit statement about the driver’s position when compiling a definitive list.
A central-seat collectible for fans
For readers interested in the layout as a design object rather than a full-size purchase, McLaren identifies a LEGO Speed Champions McLaren F1 LM model kit and describes its central driving seat. It is a scale model, not a road car and not evidence about production numbers or current stock. Details are available from McLaren’s LEGO offering.
What the evidence supports today
The defensible answer is three models with central-driver, road-use evidence: McLaren F1, Gordon Murray Automotive T.50 and the announced Gordon Murray Special Vehicles S1. The Speedtail may join them when an explicit official central-seat statement is available, while the S1 LM requires its own cockpit confirmation. The McLaren Solus GT remains outside the category because its maker says it does not comply with road regulations.
