It is not a universal current specification: Rivian now lists up to 420 miles of EPA-estimated range for the 2027 R1T Premium Long Range with 22-inch road wheels, while other trims and wheel packages have different estimates.
Where the R1T’s 400-mile claim came from
When Rivian announced the R1T on November 26, 2018, it described the all-electric pickup as having a projected range of up to 400+ miles. That was a launch-era projection, not an EPA estimate for every R1T then or now. The original announcement also described a five-passenger truck with quad-motor all-wheel drive, a 1-meter wading depth and an 11,000-pound towing capacity. 2027 R1T range depends on trim and wheels
Rivian’s 2027 R1 range update lists the Premium Long Range R1T at up to 420 miles of EPA-estimated range with 22-inch road wheels and tires. The same update gives different estimates for R1Ts fitted with 20-inch Adventure wheels, so the 420-mile figure should not be applied across the lineup.

These are Rivian’s figures in its 2026 update for the 2027 model year; they are estimates, not guarantees of the distance a driver will cover. Rivian says its EPA range figures are based on standardized laboratory tests. It identifies tires, drive modes, weather, HVAC settings and accessories as factors that can affect range, but does not quantify their individual effects. Quad range is not the same as its Conserve-mode figure
Rivian’s current Quad product page lists up to 374 miles of EPA-estimated range. The page also displays 400 miles in Conserve mode. These are differently labeled figures: 400 miles in Conserve mode is not the Quad’s EPA-estimated range. The Quad page lists 1,025 horsepower and 1,198 lb-ft of torque, and cautions that performance figures can vary with battery, tires, drive modes, vehicle load and weather. Rivian R1T Quad product page

Rivian’s 2026 update for the 2027 model year lists a U.S. R1T starting price of $79,990, excluding applicable taxes and fees. Price and availability can change, and a starting price does not identify the cost or range of a particular configuration. What the range figures can—and cannot—tell you
- The 2018 “400+ miles” was a projected launch figure, not the current range for every R1T.
- For the 2027 Premium Long Range with 22-inch road wheels, Rivian lists up to 420 miles EPA-estimated.
- Wheel and tire package matter: Rivian’s 20-inch Adventure estimates differ by trim, including 380 miles for Premium Long Range.
- Rivian’s published figures do not establish a specific real-world distance under towing, weather or other driving conditions. Use the estimate as a standardized comparison point, not a promise for a particular trip.
