Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) separates some or all of an electric car’s battery cost or financing from the car’s upfront price. You pay less initially, then pay for the battery under the arrangement attached to that vehicle—such as a per-kilometre rental or a separate battery loan. BaaS does not necessarily mean swapping batteries, and a lower upfront price does not by itself mean a lower total cost.
What BaaS means—and what it does not
Under a BaaS-labelled offer, the battery’s cost or use is handled separately from the vehicle price. Depending on the provider and contract, a company may own and rent the battery, charge according to distance driven, or arrange separate financing for the battery. The exact ownership, payment and service terms are offer-specific.
BaaS is not automatically battery swapping. Swapping is a physical process: the Ministry of Power’s 10 January 2025 guidelines define it as quickly replacing a discharged or partly discharged swappable battery with a charged one. NITI Aayog’s 20 April 2022 draft policy describes BaaS more broadly, allowing for a fixed or removable battery and treating swapping as one possible method. A fixed-battery passenger car can therefore have a BaaS payment arrangement and still be charged in the usual way.
How the payments can work
The label does not identify one standard payment model. Check the specific offer to find out whether the battery charge varies with kilometres driven or is paid as a loan instalment.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
| Example | How the battery payment works | What the official information says |
|---|---|---|
| MG Windsor BaaS | Pay-per-kilometre battery rental, in addition to the vehicle price. Charging costs are separate. | JSW MG Motor India’s product listing, accessed in 2026, starts at ₹9.99 lakh plus ₹3.99 per kilometre for the Windsor; the Windsor Pro has a higher rental rate. The brochure says rental depends on finance-partner offers, so listed rates are time-sensitive, not fixed market tariffs. MG Windsor product information |
| Mahindra BaaS/Dual Loan | A separate financing structure for the vehicle and battery, rather than a battery rental or swapping arrangement. | Mahindra’s FAQ, accessed in 2026, illustrates battery EMI starting at ₹6,975 and an effective usage cost of ₹3.75 per kilometre under stated daily-use and down-payment assumptions. These are illustrative figures, not a universal tariff. The FAQ excludes charging, maintenance and repair costs. Mahindra BaaS FAQ |
For a per-kilometre rental, the battery payment generally rises with distance driven. For a separate battery loan, the payment follows the loan’s EMI, interest, fees and tenure. Do not compare the examples’ upfront prices or per-kilometre figures as if they were equivalent: the payment mechanics and assumptions differ.
How to compare a BaaS offer with buying the battery upfront
Compare the same car and variant with and without BaaS across the period you expect to own it. Use the written offer and loan documents rather than relying on a headline price or a sample calculation.

- Set the comparison period and driving estimate. Use your expected ownership period and annual kilometres. Distance is especially important when the battery payment is usage-based.
- Record the upfront costs for both options. Include the quoted vehicle price, down payment, taxes and any applicable fees shown in the offer.
- Calculate the battery payments. For rental, apply the quoted rate to expected use and check for minimum-use rules or changes over time. For a battery loan, include EMI, interest, tenure and fees.
- Add charging and home-charging costs. Electricity is separate from the cited MG battery rental. Check whether a charger is included with the exact trim and what installation will cost.
- Read the battery and ownership clauses. Confirm warranty coverage, responsibility for accidental or customer-caused damage, repair or replacement provisions, and what happens to the agreement if you sell the car.
- Compare the totals, not just the monthly payment. Sum the upfront and recurring costs for each option over the same period and expected use. Keep assumptions—especially kilometres, financing tenure and electricity costs—consistent.
Terms for warranty, damage, transfer and resale are not settled by a general product-page summary; verify them in the current contract for your car and finance partner.
Does a BaaS car need a swapping station?
Not necessarily. BaaS describes how battery ownership, service or payment is arranged; swapping describes exchanging a removable battery for a charged one. If the car has a fixed battery, the driver can charge it as usual. The Ministry of Power’s 10 January 2025 guidelines apply to swappable-battery providers and owners or operators of battery charging and swapping stations, including safety provisions and permission for station owners to use an existing electricity connection to charge swappable batteries, subject to the guideline text. What India’s policy documents say
The Ministry of Power issued its battery-swapping and charging-station guidelines on 10 January 2025. They address station operations and swappable batteries; they do not establish that every BaaS car must swap its battery.
NITI Aayog’s 20 April 2022 battery-swapping policy is a draft, not a final nationwide passenger-car mandate. It proposed an ecosystem framework covering areas such as compatibility, safety, battery tracking, reuse and recycling, with a primary focus on light electric vehicles, especially two- and three-wheelers. The draft said its policy period would run through 31 March 2025, subject to review or extension. A Government of India parliamentary answer reported deliberations on the draft among NITI Aayog, BIS, DST and other stakeholders; it does not establish that the draft became a final passenger-car swapping rule. Check the equipment included with your trim
Charger equipment can differ by variant. MG’s product information lists a 7.4 kW AC charger for specified Windsor Pro versions; do not assume it is included with every trim or that every owner needs to buy a separate charger.
