In an October 2, 2026 report, TechCrunch said Rivian told the regulator that affected vehicles at service centers were “being inspected to properly torque the fastener or replace damaged components at no cost to customers.” That is Rivian’s description of its service remedy, not a DIY repair procedure.

TechCrunch also reported that a manufacturing operator at Rivian’s Normal, Illinois, factory noticed an under-torqued fastener on September 17, 2026. According to the report, Rivian investigated and reprogrammed the automated station to reject improperly torqued fasteners. A production-station correction does not by itself confirm that a particular vehicle has been inspected or repaired.
How to check whether your R2 is affected
- Find your vehicle’s VIN and check it in NHTSA’s recall lookup at nhtsa.gov/recalls. A model year or production-date range alone cannot establish whether your individual vehicle is included.
- Contact Rivian to confirm eligibility and arrange service. The campaign record lists Rivian customer service at 1-888-748-4261.
- Follow Rivian’s service instructions and have the recall remedy completed if your vehicle is included. The published campaign summary does not provide an owner repair procedure.
The campaign record projected that owner letters would be mailed and affected VINs would become searchable on NHTSA.gov on November 28, 2026. That date was still in the future in the latest available campaign information dated October 7, 2026, so the letters or VIN lookup should not be assumed to be available yet. TechCrunch reported that Rivian told regulators it was not aware of customer reports, accidents, injuries, or fatalities related to the issue. That statement describes what Rivian said it knew at the time; it does not remove the stated risk of losing drive power or replace the recall remedy.
