Rivian is testing R2 prototypes, but the available reports do not verify a new October 2026 sighting or establish a particular road, date, or route. Spy photos—including a reported California test vehicle with LiDAR—show development configurations, not necessarily equipment destined for customer vehicles. Rivian’s own materials still describe its R2 media-drive vehicles as prototypes and caution that performance claims are preliminary.
What has been seen on the road?
Earlier spy coverage and secondary reporting describe R2 test vehicles, including one reportedly equipped with LiDAR in California. That supports the broader conclusion that Rivian has been testing R2 prototypes; it does not establish a newly verified October 2026 sighting or the exact location and date of a particular vehicle.
Visible sensors on a test vehicle may be part of a development or validation setup. Their presence alone does not show that a sensor, feature, or configuration will be standard on production R2s.
What Rivian says about the prototype
Rivian’s 2026 media-drive article describes its dual-motor vehicle as a prototype and says: “R2 specifications and performance claims are preliminary estimates based on a prototype vehicle.” The article gives preliminary estimates of 656 hp, 609 lb-ft of torque, and 0–60 mph in 3.6 seconds for that dual-motor launch variant. Rivian’s 2026 sizing article lists the R2 at 66.9 inches tall, 185.9 inches long, with a 115.6-inch wheelbase. Those are company-published dimensions; they do not establish that every prototype or eventual trim will have identical specifications. Rivian’s R2 sizing article
R2 trims, pricing and availability listed by Rivian
As shown on Rivian’s R2 product page checked on October 8, 2026, the Performance trim is listed as available now, while Premium is scheduled for late 2026 and Standard for 2027. The dates and prices below are Rivian’s current page claims and may change.

Rivian says R2 has a native NACS charge port and can access CCS chargers using an adapter. That does not mean every adapter will work: compatibility depends on the specific hardware and charging setup. Verify an adapter’s compatibility with its manufacturer before buying, and check the charging connector available at your destination. What a spy sighting can—and cannot—tell you
- It can show: Rivian is evaluating vehicles on public roads and that a particular development vehicle may carry test equipment such as LiDAR.
- It cannot confirm: that the vehicle’s sensors, trim details, performance, or other visible features will appear on every customer vehicle.
- For buyers: use Rivian’s dated product information for current trim availability and published estimates, while treating prototype performance claims as preliminary.
