The Rivian R2 is no longer in pre-production. Rivian said customer production began April 22, 2026, at its Normal, Illinois, facility, and the company’s Q2 2026 filing says external deliveries began June 9. The R2 is being built on a new line at Normal; Rivian’s Georgia plant is future capacity, not the current R2 production site.
When did Rivian R2 production and deliveries begin?
Rivian announced on April 22, 2026, that “Customer R2 production has officially started.” The company described production as the last major step before customer deliveries later that spring. Its Q2 2026 results, filed July 30, state that external R2 deliveries began June 9.
Those milestones distinguish production from customer handover: R2s entered customer production in April, and external deliveries followed in June. Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said the company was excited to produce R2 for customers. Statements by Rivian executives about the vehicle’s manufacturing improvements are the company’s characterization, not an independent assessment. Where is the Rivian R2 being built?
Current production: Normal, Illinois
The Q2 filing identifies Rivian’s Normal, Illinois, facility as the site producing R2 on a new manufacturing line. It reports 12,613 vehicles produced at the Normal facility in Q2 2026, but that is total facility output, not R2-only production. Rivian also reported 12,194 total company deliveries during the quarter; that figure covers all Rivian vehicles, not just R2.

Georgia: planned future capacity
Rivian says a Georgia plant is under construction to add future capacity for R2, a future R2 Robotaxi variant, and upcoming models including R3. The filing does not say that R2 production has moved to Georgia. The distinction is current manufacturing in Normal versus planned capacity in Georgia.

These are manufacturer-published figures, not independent test results. Rivian says actual capability varies with configuration and conditions, including battery, tires, drive modes, vehicle load, weather, HVAC settings, and accessories. Charging speed also depends on battery state and temperature, charger, and site conditions. Rivian’s March announcement gives the US-market R2 pricing and configuration details.
How do ordering and delivery work?
In June 2026, Rivian said order invitations would begin rolling out June 9. It said timing would depend chiefly on reservation timestamp and delivery location, with existing Rivian owners potentially receiving accelerated timing. The first orderable version was the Performance Launch Package; Rivian projected Premium for late 2026 and Standard for 2027. These are company schedules and may change with availability.

Rivian described confirmed-order delivery as two to six weeks in that June guidance. It also said it was not offering factory pickup: vehicles would be handed over at a local Rivian Service + Demo Center.
