Rivian’s R2 reservation is a refundable $100 deposit for customers in the United States and Canada, but it is not a vehicle order and does not lock a trim, price or delivery date. Rivian began sending order invitations in rolling batches on June 9, 2026. Your reservation timestamp and delivery location are the main timing factors, while current Rivian ownership, expiring leases recorded in your account and some randomly selected reservation holders can affect early invitations. Check the estimated window in your Rivian Account, then compare the live configuration and price before placing an order.
The first orderable version announced was Performance with Launch Package. Rivian said Premium would follow in late 2026 and Standard in 2027. Those are dated availability expectations, not personal delivery promises. The current configurator and the estimate attached to your account are the controlling information.

What the R2 reservation actually buys you
On Rivian’s current R2 product page, the reservation requires a refundable $100 deposit and is currently limited to the United States and Canada. The deposit places you in Rivian’s reservation system; it does not create a confirmed order.
That distinction matters because Rivian says, “Your configuration and pricing are not locked until you place your order and receive a confirmation from us.” A reservation therefore does not guarantee the trim, wheels, interior, options, price or delivery date you may have seen when you paid the deposit. Check the refund language and any current terms displayed in your Rivian account before committing.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway.
- HARDWIRED - PROFESSIONAL INSTALL: This Level 2 charger is hardwired (not plug-in), so a licensed electrician installs it per National Electrical Code. It delivers up to 48A on a dedicated 60A, 240V circuit - enough to charge most EVs fully overnight. Want more speed? You can set DIP switches 4 and 5 to unlock 50A on a dedicated 70A circuit. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that your electrical panel can support the circuit.
- CONTROL FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start and stop charging, set the charging speed (6-48A), get reminders, and track how much energy and money each charge uses. Requires a 2.4 GHz home WiFi network.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
The reservation is most useful if you want to be considered as R2 production and deliveries ramp, but are willing to make the final configuration decision later. If you need a fixed price or a guaranteed date today, the deposit cannot provide that certainty.
How the reservation and order process works
- Confirm eligibility. Rivian currently lists R2 reservations for customers in the United States and Canada. Create or use the Rivian account where you intend to manage the reservation and delivery.
- Pay the $100 deposit. Rivian describes the deposit as refundable. Save the confirmation and review the exact refund terms shown at checkout or in your account.
- Monitor your Rivian Account. Rivian says the account displays an estimated invitation window. Treat it as an estimate rather than a scheduled order date.
- Wait for an order invitation. Invitations began June 9, 2026 and are being issued in rolling batches as deliveries ramp. Rivian identifies reservation timestamp and delivery location as the primary factors. Current ownership, an expiring lease entered in the account where applicable, and random selection of some reservation holders can also influence early batches.
- Review the live configuration. When invited, compare the trim, wheel choice, colors, interior, packages, estimated range and displayed price that are actually available to you. Do not assume that an announcement or an earlier reservation screen represents the current build.
- Place and confirm the order when ready. The reservation does not become a vehicle order until you submit the configuration and Rivian confirms it. Only then are the configuration and price locked under Rivian’s stated process.
- Plan for delivery after confirmation. Rivian’s published timing has varied. Its May 2026 announcement described two to six weeks after order confirmation, while an August 2026 ownership article said most customers take four to eight weeks. These are dated estimates, not guarantees; use the buyer-specific estimate in your account and order documents.
What determines when your invitation arrives?
Rivian does not present a single nationwide queue with one guaranteed date. The company names your reservation timestamp and delivery location as the primary factors. It also says early batches may account for existing Rivian ownership, expiring leases recorded in an account and randomly selected reservation holders.
That means two people who reserve on the same day can receive different estimates if they live in different delivery regions or have different account circumstances. Keep your address and account information current so the location used for scheduling is accurate. The estimated window shown in your account is more relevant to your situation than a general launch headline.

Waiting can be sensible if you need to save, arrange home charging or decide between trims. Before declining or delaying, read the current invitation terms in your account so you understand any deadline or availability condition attached to that specific offer.
What an invitation does—and does not—mean
An invitation is permission to proceed to the ordering stage; it is not proof that a vehicle has been built or assigned. It also does not automatically preserve a particular color, interior, wheel, package or price. Those details depend on what the configurator offers when you order.

If the first available configuration is not your preferred color or interior, compare the available build with the option of waiting. Rivian’s launch material does not promise that an unavailable choice can be added after the order is confirmed, so do not place an order assuming a later swap will be allowed. Ask Rivian about the current policy before submitting payment or accepting a configuration you would not keep.
Where delivery happens
Rivian’s May announcement says it is not offering factory pickup and describes delivery through a local Rivian Service + Demo Center. Verify the current delivery location and handoff procedure in the order process, because arrangements can change as production expands. If you were considering traveling to the factory to get an R2 sooner, do not build your plan around that option unless Rivian explicitly offers it for your order.

Rivian’s March 13, 2026 announcement listed starting prices for Performance with Launch Package and Premium. In May, Rivian said Performance with Launch Package was the first trim available to order, Premium was expected in late 2026 and Standard would follow in 2027. Pricing and options can change with availability, and the price is not locked until a confirmed order.
| Trim or version | Availability stated by Rivian | Starting price stated in 2026 announcements | Published performance or range figure | What to verify before ordering |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Performance with Launch Package | First R2 trim announced as orderable in May 2026 | $57,990 starting price, listed by Rivian in March 2026 | 656 hp; 0–60 mph as quick as 3.6 seconds with 21-inch wheels | Current wheel, package, color and interior availability; the final configured price |
| Premium | Expected in late 2026 in Rivian’s May announcement | $53,990 starting price, listed by Rivian in March 2026 | Up to 330 miles EPA-estimated range | Whether ordering is open in your account and which equipment is included |
| Standard RWD Long Range | Expected in 2027 in Rivian’s May announcement | Not stated in the cited announcements | Up to 345 miles estimated range | Launch timing, final price, drivetrain details and the exact range rating for the offered build |
The prices and dates in this table are announcement figures, not a guarantee that the same configuration or price will appear in your account. Rivian’s live configurator should take precedence over a dated announcement.
Performance with Launch Package
Rivian lists Performance with Launch Package at a $57,990 starting price in its March 2026 announcement. The company quotes 656 horsepower and 0–60 mph in as quick as 3.6 seconds when equipped with 21-inch wheels. Those are manufacturer figures; acceleration varies with configuration, conditions and other factors. The 21-inch-wheel qualification belongs with the acceleration claim, so do not treat 3.6 seconds as a universal result for every Performance build.

- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.

If your priority is quick acceleration, inspect the exact wheel and tire selection in the configurator. A lower starting price does not necessarily describe the equipment you want, and changing wheels or packages can alter the displayed total.

Premium
Rivian announced a $53,990 starting price for Premium and described up to 330 miles of EPA-estimated range. The May announcement placed Premium’s expected availability in late 2026. Because that date is an expectation rather than a guaranteed release for every region, confirm that Premium is selectable in your account before making a purchase plan around it.
“Up to 330 miles” is a maximum for the applicable configuration, not a promise that every Premium vehicle or every driving trip will achieve that distance. Check the wheel and equipment combination attached to the estimate you are shown.
Standard RWD Long Range
Rivian announced up to 345 miles of estimated range for Standard RWD Long Range and said Standard would follow in 2027. The cited announcements do not establish a starting price. If this version is the reason you reserved, treat the 2027 timing and the range figure as forward-looking manufacturer information and wait for the live configurator to show final equipment, price and certification details.
R2 dimensions, capability and charging figures to compare
| Item | Rivian-published information | How to use it when choosing a build |
|---|---|---|
| Body and seating | Five-seat, two-row electric midsize SUV | Check whether two rows and five seats cover your passenger and cargo needs; it is not the three-row R1S. |
| Performance | Performance with Launch Package: 656 hp and 0–60 mph as quick as 3.6 seconds with 21-inch wheels | Manufacturer figures dependent on configuration and conditions; verify the wheels on your build. |
| Range | Up to 345 miles estimated for Standard RWD Long Range; up to 330 miles EPA-estimated for Premium | Compare the exact trim and wheel choice. Neither headline maximum should be treated as universal real-world range. |
| Towing | Up to 4,400 pounds with the Tow Package | The quoted maximum requires the Tow Package. Confirm that package and the vehicle’s tow rating before planning a trailer. |
| Charging port | Native NACS port | Check the charging equipment and connector requirements at home, work and regular destinations. |
| Home-charging rate cited by Rivian | Up to 38 miles of range per hour when paired with the Rivian Wall Charger | This is a manufacturer-published pairing figure, not a promise for every electrical installation or charging session. |
Rivian’s specifications and claims are collected on its R2 model page and in its March 2026 announcement. The cited material does not provide an independent real-world range test, so use the EPA-estimated or manufacturer-estimated number as a comparison point rather than as a guaranteed trip distance.

Range planning: compare the build, not the headline
The range figures announced for R2 span different trims and rating descriptions: Standard RWD Long Range is listed at up to 345 miles estimated, while Premium is listed at up to 330 miles EPA-estimated. They are not interchangeable numbers. The rating method, drivetrain, wheel choice, weather, speed, payload and route all affect the distance you can actually cover.
When your invitation opens, record the range shown for the exact configuration before changing wheels or packages. If a change alters the estimate, use the revised figure for route planning. For a long commute or frequent road trips, leave a practical buffer instead of planning to arrive with the battery at its displayed maximum.
Rivian’s published figures should not be presented as independent testing. The available material does not establish a suitable third-party road test, so a buyer who needs a verified real-world result should wait for testing of the specific configuration or plan conservatively around the official estimate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Towing and the Tow Package
Rivian’s current R2 page quotes towing of up to 4,400 pounds with the Tow Package. The package is a condition of that maximum; an R2 without it should not be assumed to have the same rating.

The headline maximum does not tell you the range impact of towing, and the cited material does not provide a towing-range test. Plan charging stops with additional margin if you will tow.

Home charging and the NACS port
Rivian says R2 has a native NACS port and can pair with the Rivian Wall Charger for up to 38 miles of range per hour. The charger is a separate planning and purchasing decision; the reservation does not represent that home equipment as included.
Before ordering, check where a charger could be installed, whether your electrical service can support it and what local requirements apply. Rivian’s cited material does not establish installation cost or a complete list of third-party charger compatibility. Confirm availability, electrical requirements and compatibility for your home and exact R2 configuration rather than budgeting from the 38-mile-per-hour figure alone.
How to decide whether to reserve now or wait
Reserve now if queue position matters more than immediate certainty
A reservation can make sense if you want to enter Rivian’s invitation process, accept that timing depends on your timestamp and location, and are comfortable deciding on a trim later. The $100 deposit is described as refundable, and Rivian says you can wait if an invitation arrives before you are ready. Keep your account information accurate and monitor the estimated window.
Wait if you need Premium or Standard specifically
Performance with Launch Package was the first announced orderable trim. Premium was expected in late 2026 and Standard in 2027. If you would not buy Performance, reserving does not guarantee that the later trim will be available when your invitation arrives. Review the live availability before placing an order and avoid treating the announced dates as firm commitments.
Wait if your budget depends on a fixed price
The March starting prices are dated figures, and Rivian says pricing and options can change with availability. Because the price is not locked until a confirmed order, include room for a different configuration total and verify the amount shown in your account before accepting it.
Wait if you need a three-row vehicle
R2 is a five-seat, two-row midsize SUV. If your requirement is three rows, this vehicle does not meet it; do not reserve based on the assumption that the cabin layout is equivalent to a larger three-row model.
Common reservation mistakes and how to avoid them
- Confusing a deposit with an order. Keep the reservation confirmation, but remember that no trim, price or delivery date is locked until Rivian confirms the order.
- Using a general launch date as your personal date. Invitation batches began June 9, 2026, but timestamp and delivery location drive individual timing. Use the estimate in your account.
- Treating “up to” range as a guaranteed trip distance. Match the range number to the exact trim and wheels, then allow a buffer for conditions and payload.
- Assuming the fastest acceleration applies to every wheel choice. Rivian’s 3.6-second figure is stated with 21-inch wheels for Performance with Launch Package. Check your selected equipment.
- Forgetting the Tow Package condition. The 4,400-pound figure is quoted with the package. Confirm it is included before planning a trailer.
- Budgeting only for the vehicle. Home charging may require equipment and electrical work. Rivian’s 38-miles-per-hour figure applies to pairing with its Wall Charger and does not establish installation cost.
- Planning on factory pickup. Rivian’s May announcement says factory pickup is not offered and describes delivery through a local Service + Demo Center. Confirm the current handoff location.
- Assuming an unavailable color or interior can be changed later. Review the choices in the active configurator and ask Rivian about the current policy before confirming an order.
What to check when your invitation arrives
- Open the invitation through your Rivian account. Confirm that the reservation, delivery region and estimated window match your records.
- Price the complete build. Start with the displayed trim price, then account for wheels, packages and other selected options. The total shown at this stage is more relevant than a dated starting price.
- Match the build to your use. Verify seating, cargo needs, range estimate, wheel choice, Tow Package status and charging plan.
- Review availability. If your preferred color, interior or trim is unavailable, decide whether to choose an offered configuration or wait. Do not assume Rivian will retrofit or substitute it after confirmation.
- Check delivery details. Review the location, estimated timing and any instructions for the local Service + Demo Center. The two-to-six-week and four-to-eight-week figures are dated company estimates, not guarantees.
- Confirm only when the terms work. Rivian states that configuration and pricing become locked when you place the order and receive confirmation. Read the current order and refund terms before submitting.
