Rivian delivered 51,579 vehicles in 2024, about 2.9% more than in 2023. Revenue also rose, and the company reported its first quarterly gross profit in the fourth quarter. But production fell, and Rivian still recorded a $1.2 billion gross loss and a $4.746 billion net loss for the full year. The year showed genuine progress, not a settled growth or profitability story.
How many Rivian vehicles did the company deliver in 2024?
Rivian reported 51,579 deliveries in 2024, compared with 50,122 in 2023—an increase of 1,457 vehicles, or about 2.9%. Deliveries are vehicles handed over to customers; they are not the same as production, which counts vehicles manufactured.

Rivian’s fourth quarter contributed 14,183 deliveries and 12,727 vehicles produced. Deliveries can exceed production in a period when vehicles built earlier are handed over to customers, so the annual difference between those figures should not be read as a direct measure of demand.
Why did revenue grow while Rivian still lost money?
Rivian’s 2024 revenue was $4.970 billion, up from $4.434 billion in 2023. The increase did not make the company profitable for the year: Rivian reported a $1.200 billion gross loss and a $4.746 billion net loss.

Revenue is money earned from sales and services; gross profit or loss reflects revenue after the costs directly associated with it. Net income or loss also includes operating expenses and other items. Thus, higher revenue alone does not mean a company is earning a profit.
The 2024 revenue mix helps put the total in context. Rivian reported $4.161 billion from new electric vehicles, $333 million from regulatory credits, and $476 million from software and services. Those categories add up to the reported $4.970 billion total.

What was encouraging about Rivian’s 2024 results?
Deliveries and revenue edged higher
Rivian delivered more vehicles and recorded more revenue than in 2023. The gains were modest, but they represented progress against a year in which production was lower.
The fourth quarter reached gross profitability
Rivian reported $170 million in gross profit for Q4 2024: $110 million from automotive and $60 million from software and services. CEO RJ Scaringe said the company had “achieved positive gross profit” in the quarter and reduced automotive cost of goods sold by $31,000 per vehicle delivered compared with Q4 2023. That is a quarter-specific gross-profit result, not evidence that Rivian was profitable across 2024 or on a net basis.

Rivian’s shareholder letter also reported lower operating expenses year over year and automotive cost reductions per delivered vehicle. These are signs of progress on costs, but they did not erase the full-year gross loss.
What held Rivian back?
Delivery growth was limited and production declined
The 2.9% rise in deliveries was small, while production fell by about 13.5%, from 57,232 to 49,476 vehicles. Production and deliveries do not have to move in lockstep because inventory and handover timing differ; the production decline alone does not establish that demand fell.

A component shortage disrupted manufacturing
Rivian attributed a fourth-quarter production impact to a shortage of a shared component in its Enduro motor system. Reuters reported in November 2024 that the shortage had disrupted third-quarter production and prompted Rivian to cut its annual production outlook. Company management said at the time that it expected the shortage not to continue into 2025; that was a forward-looking expectation, not a guarantee.
Product mix and market conditions complicated demand
Scaringe told Reuters in November that Rivian could not build all the products and the product mix it had planned, affecting demand and revenue. Reuters also described weak electric-vehicle demand and high borrowing costs as headwinds for expensive battery-electric vehicles. Those factors offer context, but they do not by themselves prove why Rivian’s annual deliveries changed by a particular amount.

Cost improvements involved retooling
Reuters reported in June 2024 that Rivian had simplified production, removed equipment and parts, and reduced material costs in its van line. Scaringe said the design changes made the vehicle easier to build. Such work can improve unit economics, while also showing that substantial manufacturing changes were needed as the company worked toward durable profitability.

Rivian’s shareholder letter described its technology joint venture with Volkswagen Group as having a total deal size of up to $5.8 billion, including $3.5 billion of expected proceeds over several years. This is a multi-year arrangement subject to its terms—not vehicle revenue or the full amount of cash received in 2024—so it should not be added to 2024 sales or treated as if the entire sum were already available.
What later results say about the 2024 growth
Rivian’s 2025 Form 10-K, published later, reported 42,247 deliveries in 2025, down 18% from 51,579 in 2024. Automotive revenue fell 15% to $3.830 billion, while automotive gross loss narrowed from $1.207 billion in 2024 to $432 million in 2025. The filing attributed the delivery decline in part to the expiration of federal 45W tax credits after September 30, 2025, and lower regulatory-credit sales; higher average selling prices and a higher mix of R1 deliveries partly offset those effects. This later decline shows that 2024’s slight delivery increase did not continue into 2025.
The same filing reported total liquidity of $6.588 billion at December 31, 2025, compared with $9.063 billion at December 31, 2024. Those are dated balance-sheet snapshots, not a calculation of how long the company can fund its operations. Rivian also described continuing capital needs and the possibility that future investment could require debt or equity financing.
