Volkswagen is an investor in Rivian and, separately, an equal partner in a joint venture developing vehicle software and electrical architecture. Rivian’s 2025 results show the opportunity and the challenge: consolidated gross profit turned positive, but the automotive segment remained gross-loss-making and the company reported a $3.626 billion net loss.
What is Rivian Automotive?
Rivian Automotive, Inc. is an American automotive technology company that develops and manufactures electric vehicles, along with related technologies and services. It sells directly to consumer and commercial customers and reports two business segments: Automotive and Software and Services. Rivian was incorporated as a Delaware corporation on March 26, 2015. (Rivian 2025 Form 10-K)
The company’s business spans consumer vehicles, commercial electric delivery vehicles, and software and electrical-architecture work. The commercial fleet relationship with Amazon is financially significant: Rivian reported $900 million of 2025 revenue from Amazon.com and its affiliates, primarily associated with electric delivery-vehicle sales. The same filing reported $1.040 billion in 2024 and $823 million in 2023. Rivian also began selling Adventure Gear through Amazon.com in June 2025; that retail activity is separate from the delivery-vehicle revenue description. (Rivian 2025 Form 10-K)
Who owns Rivian?
Rivian is owned by its shareholders as a public company. Volkswagen Group is a significant investor, but it is not Rivian’s parent company. Volkswagen’s annual report said its equity interest in Rivian rose to 12.3% after it purchased $1 billion of Rivian ordinary shares in June 2025. That is Volkswagen’s reported stake following that transaction, not a current ownership percentage verified for a later date. Rivian’s 2025 Form 10-K says detailed ownership information is incorporated from its 2026 proxy statement; consult that proxy and subsequent ownership filings for current holder rankings or percentages. How does Volkswagen work with Rivian?
The relationship has two distinct parts: Volkswagen’s investment in Rivian and a separate 50/50 technology joint venture. Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies, LLC began operating the joint venture on November 13, 2024. Its purpose is to develop software-defined vehicle architectures and related technology for future vehicles from both companies. Equal ownership of that venture does not mean Volkswagen owns half of Rivian. (Volkswagen Group Annual Report 2025)
Volkswagen’s annual report records these investments and plans:
| Timing | Reported transaction or plan |
|---|---|
| June 2024 | Volkswagen issued a $1 billion convertible note to Rivian; it converted the note into Rivian shares in December 2024. |
| 2024 | Volkswagen invested approximately $1.3 billion for licenses and its interest in the joint venture. |
| June 2025 | Volkswagen bought $1 billion of Rivian ordinary shares. It reported that its Rivian equity interest then rose to 12.3%. |
| 2026 and 2027 | Volkswagen expected to invest up to a further $2.5 billion, subject to milestones, including up to $1.5 billion in Rivian ordinary shares. This was a forward-looking plan, not a completed investment reported in that annual report. |
These figures describe Volkswagen’s historical transactions and its stated milestone-dependent plans in its 2025 annual report. They should not be read as confirmation of later investment or as a current ownership update. (Volkswagen Group Annual Report 2025)
Is Rivian profitable?
Not on a net-income basis in 2025. Rivian reported positive consolidated gross profit, but that measure does not mean the company was profitable overall or that its vehicle business had reached gross profitability. The figures below are U.S. dollars for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2025, as reported by Rivian in its Form 10-K filed in February 2026. (Rivian 2025 Form 10-K)

| Vehicles produced | 42,284 |
| Vehicles delivered | 42,247 |
| Total revenue | $5.387 billion |

| Software and Services gross profit | $576 million |
| Net income (loss) | $(3.626) billion |
Software and Services provided the positive segment contribution while Automotive reported a gross loss. Rivian attributed the increase in Software and Services primarily to electrical-architecture and software-development services for the Volkswagen joint venture, as well as remarketing and vehicle repair and maintenance services. The 2025 consolidated gross profit therefore should not be interpreted as evidence that vehicle production itself was gross profitable. (Rivian 2025 Form 10-K)

R2 is a central growth opportunity
In its 2025 Form 10-K, Rivian said it expected customer deliveries of R2 to begin in the second quarter of 2026 and described the vehicle as foundational to its longer-term growth and profit potential. The company said R2 would use technologies developed for R1 while aiming to reduce complexity and improve cost efficiency. This is the expectation stated in a filing for the year ended December 31, 2025; it is not confirmation that deliveries subsequently began. (Rivian 2025 Form 10-K)

Execution and financing will shape the outcome
Rivian identifies product development and launches, production and delivery scale-up, customer demand, cost control, financing, and competition as factors that can affect future performance. A useful way to assess progress is to track the company across these dimensions:
- Volume: production and deliveries, including whether a new model can be ramped reliably.
- Vehicle economics: Automotive gross profit or loss, rather than consolidated gross profit alone.
- Cash and funding: liquidity and financing needs as production expands.
- Other revenue contributions: the scale and durability of Software and Services, including its reliance on joint-venture work.
- Demand and customer exposure: consumer demand and the role of commercial-fleet customers such as Amazon.
Rivian cautioned in its filing: “Our historical results are not necessarily indicative of the results that may be expected for any period in the future.” The company’s outlook is therefore conditional on execution and market conditions, not a forecast guaranteed by past results.
