Choose the River Indie if useful, built-in cargo capacity is your priority. River publishes 55 litres of lockable storage—43 L under the seat and 12 L in a glovebox—without relying on an add-on compartment. Choose the Ather Rizta if its specific battery variant, charging access and optional 22 L Frunk fit your route better. The Rizta has a 34 L boot; with the Frunk included, Ather says total storage is 56 L.
Those litre figures do not prove that your full-face helmet, laptop bag or grocery load will fit. Before paying, check the compartment shape with your actual items, confirm the exact Rizta variant and Frunk inclusion, and map charging and service near home and work.

River Indie vs Ather Rizta at a glance
These scooters suit different buying priorities even though their headline storage totals are close. River’s 55 L figure is standard built-in capacity split between two compartments. Ather’s 34 L boot is the base figure; the extra 22 L Frunk is an accessory or variant-dependent item that must be confirmed on the quotation. Storage: built-in capacity matters more than the headline total
River Indie: 55 L included in the published configuration
River’s product information divides the Indie’s storage into a 43 L under-seat compartment and a 12 L glovebox. That is useful for commuters who carry a combination of a helmet, rain gear, charging cables, groceries or a work bag and do not want to purchase a separate front compartment. River also lists pannier stays on both sides, accessory mounts and a bag hanger, giving you additional ways to carry items outside the main cavities.
The storage is lockable according to River’s published configuration, but capacity alone does not describe the opening, depth or usable floor area. A large number can still be awkward for a rectangular laptop bag or a tall helmet. Test the actual item you carry every day, and check whether the under-seat space remains usable with the supplied charging equipment.
Ather Rizta: 34 L boot plus a separately described 22 L Frunk
Ather lists 34 L of boot space on its Rizta specification page. Its product page describes an additional 22 L Frunk, while an Ather engineering article dated 28 August 2026 states: “The Storage: Between the 34L underseat boot and the additional 22L Frunk, you have 56L of total storage space.” That is Ather’s design statement, not an independent measurement.

Treat the Frunk as accessory storage unless the exact quote for your scooter says it is fitted and included. Confirm its availability, colour or fitment, and final price with the dealer. A Rizta advertised with 34 L but delivered without the Frunk is not equivalent to the 56 L configuration described by Ather.

How to make a meaningful storage check
- Measure your helmet, laptop bag, top box or grocery crate at its widest and tallest points.
- Ask the dealer to open both compartments on the exact scooter and place those items inside; do not rely on the litre number.
- Check whether hinges, charging hardware, helmet straps or a full bag block the opening.
- Confirm what remains lockable when the Frunk, pannier hardware or other accessories are installed.
- Leave room for rain gear and a charging cable rather than treating every litre as permanently available.
Commute range: compare the test cycle and the exact variant
River’s figures include useful mode-by-mode guidance
River’s official specifications list a 160 km IDC range for the 4 kWh Indie. The same page gives 110 km in Eco, 90 km in Ride and 70 km in Rush. Those mode figures help explain the effect of riding style: selecting the higher-performance mode reduces the manufacturer’s stated distance. They are still laboratory or manufacturer test-cycle claims, not a guaranteed distance in traffic, heat, rain, hills or with a heavy load.
Use the mode number as a planning ceiling rather than a promise. If your daily round trip is 50 km, a 70 km Rush claim leaves little margin for detours, weather or battery ageing. A route that fits comfortably inside the lower Eco or Ride figure gives you more flexibility, but you should still preserve a reserve and identify a charger near both ends of the journey.
Rizta range depends on the battery and version you select
Ather’s current specification page groups several alternatives and displays 123 km and 161 km IDC figures alongside different battery capacities. It lists installed battery alternatives of 2.7, 2.9 and 3.5 kWh, plus 4.3 kW peak power, 22 Nm torque and an 80 km/h top speed. Because the page presents multiple combinations, do not quote a Rizta range without naming the exact battery and variant shown on your order.
An Autocar comparison accessed on 13 October 2026 listed a 3.7 kWh Rizta Z and a 160 km claimed range. That differs from the 3.5 kWh alternative displayed on Ather’s specification page, so use the official, current variant sheet and the dealer’s written quotation to resolve the discrepancy before comparing it with the 4 kWh Indie.

Plan your route with a reserve
- Record the real round-trip distance, including school, shopping or office detours.
- Decide whether you normally use Eco, Ride or Rush on the River, or which Rizta variant and riding profile match your route.
- Keep a reserve for traffic, temperature, hills, passenger weight and battery degradation; neither manufacturer’s IDC number is a guaranteed commute distance.
- Check whether home parking has a safe electrical outlet and whether workplace charging is permitted.
- Map a public charger near home, work and the midpoint before choosing a smaller battery for a lower purchase price.
Charging: home convenience and route coverage
River Indie charging options
River lists a 750 W charger with a stated five-hour charging time and a 480 W option with an eight-hour charging time on its official specification page. Treat these as River’s published charger and time claims for the listed configuration; confirm which charger is included with the variant you are buying and whether the quoted time is the dealer’s current specification.
For a regular commuter, overnight charging is usually the practical test: can you return home, connect the scooter safely and have enough charge for the next departure? Ask where the charging connector is located, whether the cable travels in the scooter, and how the dealer handles a damaged charger or a change in charger specification.
Ather Rizta home charging and Ather Grid
Ather advertises home charging and access to its Ather Grid network. Its Rizta product page claims more than 6,100 public charging points in more than 370 cities. That count is a changing manufacturer claim, so verify live locations and operating status in your city before relying on it for a daily route.

Performance and road use
River publishes 6.7 kW peak power, 4.5 kW continuous power, 26 Nm torque and a 90 km/h top speed in Rush mode. It also quotes 0–40 km/h in 3.7 seconds in Rush mode. Ather lists 4.3 kW peak power, 22 Nm torque and an 80 km/h top speed. These are specification figures, not an instruction to ride at maximum speed or a substitute for a test ride.
The published numbers suggest that the Indie has more peak output and a higher top-speed figure, while the Rizta’s lower figures may be entirely adequate for urban traffic. Your decision should depend on junctions, inclines, passenger use, speed limits and how often you need to merge into faster traffic. Ride both scooters on the roads you actually use if possible, paying attention to low-speed balance, braking feel, steering effort, seat comfort and the ease of placing your feet down.
Wheel and seating details that affect daily comfort
River’s product page lists 14-inch alloy wheels. Ather’s engineering article says the Rizta seat is 900 mm long. Those details do not establish which scooter is more comfortable for every rider, but they are useful prompts for a test ride: check whether your passenger has usable seating, whether the floorboard accepts your feet, and whether the seat height and length work with your riding position.

The comparison page from Autocar India showed ₹1.52 lakh for River Indie Standard and ₹1.57 lakh for Ather Rizta Z 3.7 kWh when accessed on 13 October 2026. These are dated ex-showroom listings. They are not on-road prices and should not be treated as a current offer for every city.

River’s own Indie page asks visitors to select a city for pricing, and the captured page does not provide one broadly applicable figure. Ather’s grouped specification page likewise requires you to identify the exact current configuration. Request an itemised on-road quote rather than comparing two advertisements with different equipment.
Ownership support and service access
No comparable service-centre footprint or independent reliability result is established here. That makes local verification essential. Before booking, ask for the nearest authorised workshop, expected appointment process, parts availability for routine work, roadside-assistance terms and the procedure for a battery or charger fault.
Check the route from your home to the service location, not just the brand’s national presence. A scooter that fits your commute but requires a long trip for every inspection can cost more time than a small difference in purchase price. Ask the dealer to put warranty exclusions, battery coverage, charger coverage and service intervals in writing.

- You want 55 L of published built-in storage without making the Frunk a separate purchase.
- Your normal load includes several small items that benefit from a glovebox plus a large under-seat compartment.
- You value the higher published output, 90 km/h Rush-mode top speed and 14-inch wheels, subject to a satisfactory test ride.
- The 70 km Rush, 90 km Ride or 110 km Eco figures leave an acceptable reserve for your route.
- The local quote, charger option and service location work for your budget and routine.
Pick the Ather Rizta when the variant and charging ecosystem fit better
- Your chosen Rizta battery variant provides enough range margin for your actual round trip.
- You have confirmed whether the 22 L Frunk is included and verified that your cargo fits both compartments.
- Ather Grid locations are convenient and operational along your regular route, with home charging available where you park.
- The Rizta’s 80 km/h top speed and 4.3 kW peak power suit your traffic and passenger needs.
- The exact on-road quote, warranty and nearby authorised service support are acceptable.
When neither headline range nor storage settles it
Choose by the constraint that would inconvenience you most often. If you carry a helmet and work gear every day, physically test storage first. If you finish long shifts far from home, charging location and reserve matter more than a one-litre storage advantage. If your budget is tight, compare complete on-road totals—including charger, Frunk, insurance and incentives—rather than the dated ex-showroom figures.
A purchase-day checklist
- Write down the exact model, trim, battery capacity and claimed range on the quote.
- Measure and test your helmet, bag, groceries and charging cable in the actual compartments.
- For the Rizta, have the Frunk listed as included, optional or unavailable; do not infer it from a 56 L advertisement.
- For the Indie, confirm whether the 750 W or 480 W charger is supplied and which charging time applies.
- Open the current charging map for your home, work and fallback route.
- Obtain a city-specific on-road price with registration, insurance, incentives, accessories and installation itemised.
- Locate the nearest authorised service point and ask about warranty, roadside assistance and battery support.
- Ride both scooters with your usual passenger if relevant, checking low-speed manoeuvring, braking, seat comfort and storage access.
