The same specification page lists 110 km in Eco, 90 km in Ride and 70 km in Rush. In one BikeDekho road test using a mix of Eco and Ride, the scooter covered 115 km before a full recharge. Those figures describe different test bases, so they should not be treated as interchangeable.
Your result depends mainly on speed and riding style, selected mode, rider and cargo weight, hills and other terrain, ambient temperature, road gradient and tyre pressure. River itself says riding style, terrain and load affect range. The most reliable way to plan a trip is to record what your own Indie achieves on a representative route, then leave a margin instead of planning around the 160 km headline.

What River’s range figures actually mean
Range figures are useful only when you know how they were produced. River publishes a certified IDC result, mode-specific figures and other specifications on its current Indie specification page. A road test measures a particular scooter, rider, route and weather. An owner’s dashboard estimate is another kind of evidence again.

River’s dealer FAQ puts the qualification plainly: “Our Indie has a certified IDC range of 160 km. However, just like any other vehicle, the range depends on factors like riding style, terrain and load.” That statement appears on River’s Bommanahalli dealer page, so it should be attributed to River rather than to a named spokesperson. The Indie specification page lists a 4 kWh battery. It also lists a 750 W charger with a stated five-hour charging time and a 480 W charger with a stated eight-hour charging time. These are charging specifications, not extra range, and equipment or timings can change with a model update.
Why the certified 160 km is different from road use
IDC is a controlled certification cycle. It gives buyers a consistent number for comparing vehicles, but it does not recreate every commute. Traffic flow, stop-and-go riding, sustained high speed, gradients, wind, temperature and payload all differ from the conditions used for certification.
Mode figures are also manufacturer-published values rather than independent endurance tests. River lists Eco at 110 km, Ride at 90 km and Rush at 70 km, with top speeds of 50, 80 and 90 km/h respectively. A mode that permits a higher speed gives you more performance headroom, but using that headroom generally consumes energy faster. The figures should therefore be read as separate operating references, not as a promise that switching modes will always produce exactly those distances.
BikeDekho’s 115 km result is valuable because it is a completed road test rather than a certification number. It was conducted with a mix of Eco and Ride modes, under that publication’s particular route and conditions. It does not establish a statistical average for all Indie owners. There is no authoritative published distribution showing how far a typical owner travels on a charge.
How riding mode and speed change kilometres per charge
Eco: the range-first setting
Eco is capped at River’s listed 50 km/h and has the highest mode-specific range figure, 110 km. Choose it when that speed limit fits the road. It is especially appropriate for urban trips where traffic already keeps speeds moderate. The benefit is not merely the label: limiting speed makes it easier to avoid the high energy demand associated with rapid acceleration and fast cruising.
Ride: a middle ground
Ride is listed at 80 km/h and 90 km of range. It provides more speed for faster roads but leaves less stated range than Eco. If your route includes open sections, use Ride where needed and return to a gentler pace in traffic rather than treating the mode as an on/off performance switch.

Rush: reserve performance for when it matters
Rush permits a listed 90 km/h and has a listed 70 km range. Frequent hard acceleration and high-speed cruising can reduce the distance available before charging. Use it for a specific need, not as the default setting when your priority is maximum kilometres per charge.
Do not convert mode figures into a guaranteed route distance
River does not state that every rider will achieve 110, 90 or 70 km in the corresponding mode. Speed, load, gradient and weather still apply. Treat each number as a starting point for a personal baseline.
Throttle, braking and regenerative energy
The V3 manual excerpt recommends avoiding erratic acceleration and using Eco for better range. Smoothly roll on the throttle, maintain a steady pace where traffic allows, and look ahead so you can ease off before a junction instead of repeatedly accelerating and braking.
The manual also describes regenerative braking. Regen can return some energy during deceleration, but the cited material does not establish a fixed distance gain. It is not a reason to brake late or to assume that every downhill section will offset the energy used climbing it. Use the system as part of smooth riding, while keeping normal braking control and following traffic conditions.
Load, hills, temperature and route choice
Rider and cargo weight
River’s dealer FAQ explicitly names load as a range factor. Carry only what the trip requires, distribute luggage securely and account for the weight of a passenger or accessories when estimating a route. River lists accessory mounts and pannier stays; adding carrying equipment can be useful, but the added hardware and cargo still form part of the load.

Hills require energy on the climb. A downhill return may recover some energy through regenerative braking, but it does not make a hilly route equivalent to a flat route. The V3 manual excerpt identifies road gradient as an input to the scooter’s range estimate, while River’s FAQ names terrain more generally.

Ambient temperature
The V3 manual excerpt also identifies ambient temperature as a range-estimation input. Because the cited material does not provide a temperature-by-temperature correction, do not subtract a fixed percentage in cold or hot weather. Instead, use a larger planning margin until you have measured the effect on your own route.
Wind and stop-start traffic
Wind and repeated acceleration change the work the motor must do, even when the dashboard route distance is unchanged. A route with frequent stops, exposed roads or long inclines should be treated as more demanding than a flat, steady-speed route of the same length.
Tyre pressure: a simple maintenance check with a range effect
The V3 manual excerpt warns that low tyre pressure may lower range and recommends checking pressure every two weeks. It lists 28 psi at the front and 33 psi at the rear for that manual version.

River’s manual index says three Indie versions have been launched, and the figures above come from a V3 manual copy hosted by Scribd rather than a directly opened official PDF. Check the manual for your exact scooter on River’s official manual page before inflating. A portable inflator with a pressure gauge can help you restore the specified pressure; it is a maintenance aid, not a range upgrade.
River’s current specification page lists a 110/80-14 front tyre and a 120/70-14 rear tyre. Tyre size does not tell you the correct pressure by itself, so use the value for your version and tyre configuration.
How to establish your Indie’s own usable range
There is no universal real-world figure in the cited material. You can, however, create a practical baseline that reflects your commute instead of relying on a brochure number.

- Start with the correct setup. Confirm the scooter version, tyre condition and pressure from the applicable owner’s manual. Charge fully using your normal charging equipment.
- Choose a representative route. Include the same hills, traffic pattern, passenger or luggage and typical speeds that you expect on the trip you are planning.
- Record the operating details. Note the selected mode, approximate speed, rider and cargo load, weather and whether the route was flat or hilly. These details make one ride comparable with another.
- Measure completed distance. Record the odometer distance at the start and end. Dashboard range estimates are predictions; a completed-distance record is the useful measurement for your route.
- Repeat under similar conditions. One ride can be distorted by traffic, wind or an unusual detour. Several comparable rides give you a more dependable personal baseline.
- Plan below the observed limit. Leave a margin for an unexpected detour, a missed charging opportunity, heavier-than-usual load or weather that is more demanding than the test ride. The sources do not establish a universal reserve percentage, so choose a margin based on your route history rather than presenting one as an official rule.
Keep separate records for Eco, Ride and Rush if you use more than one. A mixed-mode result, such as BikeDekho’s 115 km test, cannot be directly compared with a single-mode figure unless the speed, route and other conditions are also comparable.
Practical steps to get more kilometres from each charge
1. Select the lowest suitable mode
Use Eco when 50 km/h is sufficient. Move to Ride or Rush only when the road and traffic require their additional speed. This is the most direct choice under your control because River’s own figures show a lower stated range as the mode’s top speed rises.
2. Accelerate progressively
Avoid repeated full-throttle launches between closely spaced junctions. Build speed smoothly, hold a steady pace and anticipate traffic lights. This follows the V3 manual excerpt’s advice to avoid erratic acceleration.
3. Look ahead and use deceleration early
Ease off when you see congestion, a red light or a downhill section approaching. Regenerative braking can then contribute during deceleration without encouraging late, energy-wasting braking. The available evidence does not support promising a specific percentage improvement from regen.
4. Check pressure every two weeks
Use a reliable gauge, check when the tyres are in the condition specified by the manual, and adjust to the exact value for your Indie version. Low pressure can reduce range according to the V3 manual excerpt.

5. Remove unnecessary load
Do not carry tools, luggage or accessories that the trip does not need. If you use pannier stays or other carrying equipment, include both the equipment and its contents in your route estimate.

6. Allow for demanding conditions
Build extra margin for long climbs, heavy traffic, extreme ambient temperatures, strong wind or a passenger. Because the sources identify these as influences but do not quantify each effect, a personal log is safer than a fixed correction formula.
7. Charge and plan around the actual trip
Use the charger supplied or specified for your scooter and check the expected charging time for that equipment. River lists 750 W and 480 W charger options with stated five-hour and eight-hour times respectively. Do not confuse a faster charging option with greater battery capacity or range; the Indie specification lists a 4 kWh battery.
How to compare an Indie range claim with another source
Two numbers are comparable only when their test bases are comparable. Use this checklist before deciding that one scooter, mode or review delivers more distance:

For example, comparing the 160 km IDC figure with BikeDekho’s 115 km mixed-mode road test as though one were a pass/fail score would be misleading. The first is a certified-cycle result; the second is one completed route under one publication’s conditions.
What to do when your range suddenly falls
- Check the basics first: verify tyre pressures against the correct manual, look for visible tyre damage and confirm that the scooter is not carrying an unusual load.
- Review the ride: note whether you used Rush more often, travelled faster, faced stronger wind, climbed more or carried a passenger.
- Compare like with like: repeat a familiar route in the same mode and at similar speeds. A single abnormal trip is not enough to identify a fault.
- Check the instrument against distance: record odometer distance and charging history rather than relying only on the remaining-range estimate.
- Use River’s support resources: consult the manual for your version through River’s manual index and contact an authorised service point if a repeatable drop remains after setup and route factors are accounted for.
Do not inflate tyres beyond the specified value or attempt an improvised battery adjustment to recover range. Pressure and maintenance changes should follow the manual for your exact Indie.
Bottom line for trip planning
Use 160 km as River’s IDC comparison figure, not as your guaranteed travel distance. River’s own mode references are 110 km in Eco, 90 km in Ride and 70 km in Rush; BikeDekho recorded 115 km in one mixed Eco/Ride test. For a dependable plan, choose the lowest suitable mode, ride smoothly, maintain the correct tyre pressure, reduce unnecessary load, account for hills and temperature, and base your reserve on repeated measurements from your own scooter.
