Rimac Technology unveiled a next-generation solid-state battery platform at IAA Mobility in Munich on September 8, 2025, working with cell maker ProLogium and materials partner Mitsubishi Chemical Group. It is a supplier technology announcement—not a confirmed battery for a named production car, and not a consumer product with a published price, range or launch date.

What Rimac introduced

Rimac Technology presented its next-generation solid-state battery alongside other battery and powertrain systems at IAA Mobility 2025. The broader showcase also included an Evo battery using 46XX Gen2 NMC cells and a thermoplastic-composite housing, hybrid battery configurations using 46XX and 2170 cells, and new e-axles and electronic-control systems. The solid-state platform is one part of a technology-supplier portfolio, not a vehicle launch.

Rimac describes the new system as a lighter, safer and more energy-dense design intended for automotive production. Those are company claims and goals; the announcement does not provide independently validated complete-pack specifications. Rimac Technology’s announcement and ProLogium’s memorandum announcement describe a collaboration, not a retail product release.

Who is making what?

ProLogium is the cell partner. It describes its technology as a solid-state lithium-ceramic battery with an all-inorganic electrolyte and separator approach. Rimac Technology’s role is in system and pack development and integration; Mitsubishi Chemical Group contributes materials and housing expertise. The available announcements do not say that Rimac manufactured the cells itself.

The collaboration is framed as a memorandum of understanding. Its stated development aims include a module-free architecture, improved packaging efficiency and thermal management, and a design that can be disassembled for repair, reuse and recycling. These are development objectives, not proof that a final production pack already achieves them.

What “solid-state” means—and what it does not

Most conventional lithium-ion EV cells use a liquid or gel electrolyte. A solid-state design replaces that electrolyte system with solid material. The label covers different chemistries and architectures; it does not automatically mean a battery is lithium-free, fireproof, inexpensive or better in every operating condition. ProLogium’s disclosed approach is a lithium-based ceramic system.

Replacing a flammable liquid electrolyte may reduce some fire risks, but safety is not binary. Internal shorts, mechanical damage, defects and thermal events remain relevant. A battery needs validation at cell, pack and vehicle level, including crash and abuse testing.

Solid materials also do not eliminate the engineering challenges of interfaces between battery components, pressure management, charging behavior, cycle life, production yield and cost. A promising cell or demonstrator does not by itself establish a durable, affordable battery that can be produced consistently at automotive scale.

What performance figures are available?

Rimac’s press release does not publish an official energy-density figure for the complete automotive pack or a vehicle-level range. ProLogium’s presentation provides figures for its technology and configurations, but those should not be mistaken for specifications of a Rimac-installed battery.

Figure What the source says How to read it
860 Wh/L Listed in ProLogium’s IAA presentation A presentation-level volumetric-density figure; it is not identified as a complete Rimac vehicle-pack specification.
6.4 minutes to 80% at 400 V Listed in the same presentation for a configuration A company-presented charging claim, not a promise that a vehicle will charge this quickly on any public charger.
Up to 400 Wh/kg and 940 Wh/L Projected for a thick-film Gen 4 silicon configuration Projected figures, not a confirmed production pack result.
Up to 470 Wh/kg and 1,100 Wh/L Projected for an anode-less version A future, test-dependent projection; the presentation described a test report as due in the second half of 2026.

These figures come from ProLogium’s IAA presentation. Cell-level energy density is not the same as complete-pack density: the pack also needs a housing, cooling, wiring, sensors, control electronics and crash protection. Nor does cell density translate directly into driving range, which also depends on usable capacity, vehicle efficiency, tires, aerodynamics, speed and temperature.

A secondary report attributes a 100-kWh capacity, 260 Wh/kg, operation at −20°C and 10–80% charging in 6.5 minutes to the displayed pack. Those figures are not in Rimac’s own release, so they should be treated as reported demonstrator specifications rather than confirmed production-pack data. The report does not make them official vehicle specifications. TVBS’s report is the source for those additional claims.

Why the pack architecture matters

In a conventional battery pack, cells are often grouped into modules before those modules are installed in the pack. A module-free or more directly integrated design can reduce duplicated housings, interconnects and inactive material, potentially improving packaging and reducing mass. The companies also say the intended design should permit disassembly down to individual cells, which could help repair, reuse and recycling.

Direct integration has trade-offs. Engineers still have to manage crash protection, heat and thermal propagation, manufacturing tolerances, safe service procedures and repair costs. Removing modules does not automatically make a pack easier or cheaper to repair. The practical answer will depend on the final design and service documentation.

Is the battery ready for production?

Rimac positions its technology portfolio as production-oriented, and ProLogium says the partnership is intended to support series production. That is not the same as a battery already being manufactured for customer vehicles. A demonstrator, pilot production, series production and customer deliveries are distinct milestones.

ProLogium’s broader European roadmap says construction at its Dunkirk, France, project is scheduled to begin in 2026, with fourth-generation battery production planned from 2028 and a target of 4 GWh of capacity by 2029. These are company plans and targets, not guaranteed dates—and they do not establish when, or whether, a Rimac customer vehicle will use the platform. See ProLogium’s roadmap announcement.

Before the technology’s consumer significance is clear, buyers and automakers will need more than headline density or charging figures: repeatable charge curves, cycle-life and durability data, low-temperature performance under stated conditions, safety testing, manufacturing consistency and a confirmed vehicle application.

Which cars will use it?

No cited announcement names a production Rimac model—or a Bugatti, Porsche or BMW—as a user of this solid-state platform. Rimac’s current Nevera engineering information describes the car’s existing technology but does not identify it as using the newly announced ProLogium solid-state pack.

Rimac Technology has other, separate vehicle programs. Its announced battery cooperation with BMW for the i7 concerns a lithium-ion system using BMW Gen6 4695 cylindrical cells, not this solid-state platform. Likewise, the battery Rimac Technology announced for the Bugatti Tourbillon is a 25-kWh hybrid system, not the new solid-state system. Those projects show Rimac’s supplier work, but they do not confirm a future application for this battery. Sources: BMW’s announcement and Rimac Technology’s Tourbillon announcement.

What to watch for next

  • A named vehicle and delivery timetable: Neither is confirmed for this platform.
  • Pack-level specifications: Look for final usable capacity, pack mass and volume, and clearly defined energy-density figures.
  • Charging conditions: A fast-charge result depends on the cell, pack cooling, battery-management software, starting charge, temperature and charger power. A headline time cannot be assumed at every station.
  • Cold-weather evidence: A claim that a battery operates at a given temperature does not necessarily mean it supports maximum-power driving or rapid charging at that temperature. Preconditioning, starting state of charge and the meaning of “performance” matter.
  • Independent durability and safety validation: Long-term cycling, abuse and crash testing would help establish how the pack performs outside a demonstration.
  • Manufacturing scale: Consistent yield and cost at high volume are crucial to turning a technical platform into a commercially viable product.
