How does the ultra-flat movement work?
Making a mechanical watch this thin requires redesigning parts normally stacked inside a movement. Richard Mille attributes the flat profile to a patented ultra-flat escapement. In its description, the design removes the conventional dart, also called a guard pin, and safety roller, and relocates the banking function to the anchor fork. Those conventional components help bank the lever after shock; changing that arrangement allows the escapement to fit the thinner construction.

The movement uses a Grade 5 titanium baseplate and bridges. Richard Mille also specifies a three-arm titanium-alloy balance with six setting weights, Kif shock protection, and a fast-rotating barrel that completes one revolution in six hours rather than 7.5. What does Richard Mille say about durability?
Richard Mille says the movement underwent more than 6,000 hours of development and laboratory testing and can withstand accelerations exceeding 5,000 g. The brand also says the baseplate was validated for strength. These are manufacturer-reported claims, not independent test findings established by the cited product information. The watch’s stated water resistance is 10 metres, so its thinness should not be mistaken for a claim of broad water-sport suitability.

How many were made, and when did the Ferrari partnership begin?
The RM UP-01 Ferrari is limited to 150 pieces. Richard Mille says the two companies joined in a long-term partnership in 2021; the watch followed in 2022. The official partnership page presents the model as a collaboration between the watchmaker and Ferrari.

The published dimensions make the RM UP-01 Ferrari exceptionally thin, but they do not answer whether it currently holds the thinnest-mechanical-watch record. A fair comparison would need to use the same basis—complete watch thickness rather than movement thickness—and account for whether each contender is mechanical, a production watch, or a concept, as well as the date of the claimed record. The official pages establish Richard Mille’s launch-era positioning and specifications, not a current independent comparison.
