Jaguar has moved its reinvention from a design concept to a named production-oriented car: the Type 01, a four-door electric grand tourer due to open for orders in early 2027. Jaguar’s announced specifications make the proposition more concrete, but they are manufacturer claims, not independent test results—and with orders and deliveries still ahead, there is no basis yet to call the gamble a commercial success or failure.
What is Jaguar changing?
Jaguar is repositioning itself as an all-electric luxury brand, with a new visual identity and a dedicated electric-vehicle platform. This is more than adding an EV to its existing range: the company has framed the shift as a reinvention of what the brand is and what kind of cars it will make.
Jaguar’s official strategy, called Reimagine, describes that move toward electric luxury and sets a target of net zero across its supply chain, products and operations by 2039. That is a company goal, not a result already achieved. JLR’s 2026 annual-report outlook also points to next-generation vehicles and the unveiling of the first new Jaguar as part of the company’s agenda; it does not establish whether the strategy will succeed in the market.
The change is conspicuous partly because Jaguar’s proposition has long been associated with its heritage. The brand’s own history traces a legacy of design departures, including the E-type’s debut at the 1961 Geneva Auto Show. That history gives Jaguar material to draw on, but it also raises the question of how much of the old identity buyers expect to see in a new one.

What is the Jaguar Type 01?
Unveiled in New York on 6 October 2026, the Type 01 is Jaguar’s announced luxury four-door GT and the first production Jaguar built on its Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA), a dedicated EV platform. Jaguar says orders are planned to open in early 2027, with first client deliveries expected in the second half of 2027. Both dates are forward-looking company plans.
The Type 01 replaces uncertainty about the name and basic form of Jaguar’s next car with a specific model announcement. It does not yet provide independent evidence of how the car drives, how quickly it charges in real conditions, or how buyers will respond to it.
How does the Type 01 differ from the Type 00?
The Type 00, presented in December 2024, was explicitly a non-production design concept. It previewed Jaguar’s new design direction and sat within the company’s wider ambition to become an electric-only luxury brand. Jaguar said then that its first production model would be a four-door electric GT built in the UK.

The Type 01 is the announced production-oriented model that follows that concept. Its name, platform and company-published specifications belong to the Type 01 announcement; the Type 00 was not a retail car, and figures previously associated with that concept should not be treated as Type 01 specifications.

Jaguar’s 6 October 2026 announcement gives the following headline figures. They are manufacturer claims, not independent measurements.
| Specification | Jaguar’s stated figure | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Power | More than 1,000 PS | A company-stated output figure; independent performance testing is not established. |
| Electrical architecture | 850 volts | The announced vehicle architecture, not a guarantee of a particular charging result in every situation. |
| Range | 400 miles, EPA | Jaguar’s stated EPA range figure; it is not an independent road-test result. |
| Charging | 200 miles added in 13 minutes using 350 kW charging | Jaguar’s stated charging claim. The announcement figure should not be read as a universal real-world charging time. |
The figures make the Type 01’s intended position clearer: a powerful, long-range luxury GT rather than a small electric runabout. But headline specifications alone do not establish the experience owners will get. A meaningful comparison with other luxury EVs will depend on independently tested range and charging, market-specific availability and price, charging access, performance, ownership experience and whether buyers find the design persuasive.

Why is the reinvention a gamble?
Jaguar is asking buyers to accept a break with its recent image
The brand is changing its look and its product proposition at once. That may help Jaguar stand apart, but it also asks prospective customers to connect a new electric luxury identity with a name whose appeal draws on a long history. Jaguar Managing Director Rawdon Glover described the Type 01 as distilling “the essence of Jaguar into a luxury grand tourer for a new era.” That is the company’s positioning, not an independent judgment that the car has achieved it.
A campaign reaction is not a sales result
The new branding drew criticism before the production-oriented car appeared. The Associated Press reported on 20 November 2024 that the car-free promotional video prompted negative reactions. It also reported that Elon Musk responded with the question, “Do you sell cars?”—a pointed example of the reaction, not a representative survey of buyers.

In the same AP coverage, Villanova School of Business marketing professor Charles Taylor questioned whether the campaign fit Jaguar’s heritage and potential buyers. He argued that a good electric vehicle could build on the prior image rather than discard it. That is expert commentary on the campaign, not evidence that the rebrand has harmed sales or that the Type 01 will fail.

The promised product is still in the future
At the time of the Type 01 unveiling, Jaguar’s planned order opening and first deliveries had not yet arrived. No independent sales, order or financial figures adequate to judge the model’s prospects are established here. The risk is therefore real but unresolved: a radically different brand needs a compelling car, and the announcement alone cannot show whether buyers will pay for it.

“Boldest” is a judgment, not a measurable conclusion established by the Type 01 announcement. What can be said is that Jaguar is making an unusually sweeping wager: it is attempting to become an all-electric luxury brand, introducing a new design identity and launching its first production model on a dedicated EV platform. The Type 01 makes that wager tangible, but it has not yet proved it commercially.
Jaguar’s appeal to history is also deliberate. Its official account points to the E-type’s 1961 debut, while Glover’s Type 01 statement invokes the E-type and XJS. JLR CEO Adrian Mardell made a similar aspiration when the Type 00 was announced, saying the company wanted to recapture Jaguar’s heritage and create the sense of awe associated with the E-type. These statements explain the brand’s intended continuity; they do not establish that today’s buyers will feel it.

What would show whether the gamble is working?
The clearest evidence will come after the car reaches customers, not from campaign attention or a specification sheet. A fair assessment should look for:
- Whether Jaguar opens orders and begins deliveries on the announced schedule.
- Market-specific pricing and availability, neither established by the headline figures in the Type 01 announcement.
- Independent tests of range, charging and performance, rather than relying only on manufacturer claims.
- Customer response and credible order or sales figures once the car is offered for sale.
- Evidence that the design and luxury proposition attract buyers while making the car recognizably Jaguar to them.
Until those measures exist, the most accurate verdict is that Jaguar has made its reinvention more concrete, not that it has won or lost. The Type 01 is the pivotal test the strategy now needs.
