Yes—if you want a roomier electric crossover, more range and CCS fast-charging hardware, and are comfortable paying more than the Leaf’s original price. The 2024 Ariya is not a like-for-like Leaf replacement: it is larger and more expensive, and its range and charging specifications vary by trim. Your budget, routes, home-charging access and preference for a compact hatchback or crossover should decide the upgrade.
What changes when you move from a Leaf to an Ariya?
The Leaf is a compact hatchback; the Ariya is a larger crossover. That makes the Ariya a more natural fit if you need additional passenger or cargo room, but a less natural one if you value the Leaf’s smaller footprint for parking and daily errands. The New Atlas review by Aaron Turpen describes the Ariya as practical and comfortable, but neither as small nor as inexpensive as the Leaf. Those are the reviewer’s impressions, not a direct measurement of cargo space or ownership costs. New Atlas review, November 24, 2024.
How much more range does the Ariya offer?
It depends on the exact trim. Nissan’s U.S. model-year figures show a significant range spread across both lineups; the Ariya’s highest figure belongs to the Venture+, not every Ariya.
| Vehicle and configuration | Battery | EPA-estimated range | Original U.S. MSRP |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 Nissan Ariya Venture+ | 87 kWh | Up to 304 miles | Trim-specific price not stated in Nissan’s March 4, 2024 announcement |
| 2024 Nissan Ariya lineup starting price | 63 kWh or 87 kWh, depending on trim | 214–304 miles across listed configurations | From $39,590 |
| 2024 Nissan Leaf S | 40 kWh | Up to 149 miles | $28,140 |
| 2024 Nissan Leaf SV Plus | 60 kWh | Up to 212 miles | $36,190 |
These are Nissan’s U.S. model-year specifications and historical MSRP figures, not current used-car prices or guarantees of real-world range. Nissan’s March 2024 Ariya announcement lists the Venture+ maximum and battery options; its June 2023 Leaf announcement lists the two Leaf configurations. What did each cost when new?
The 2024 Ariya’s U.S. starting MSRP was $39,590, compared with $28,140 for the Leaf S and $36,190 for the Leaf SV Plus. Nissan’s announced destination and handling charges were $1,390 for the Ariya and $1,115 for the Leaf. Adding those charges gives historical starting totals of $40,980 and $29,255 respectively; actual window stickers, taxes and dealer charges may differ. These are original model-year figures, not a guide to current listings, incentives or used values.
Nissan senior director of EV Strategy and Transformation Trisha Jung said the revised Ariya pricing would “improve the model’s competitiveness and ensure we are delivering maximum value to our customers.” That was Nissan’s explanation of its pricing decision, not independent evidence that the Ariya represents better value. Nissan U.S. Newsroom, March 4, 2024.

Will the Ariya work with your charging routine?
Fast-charging connectors and rated power
For the 2024 U.S. models, Nissan lists CCS and DC fast charging up to 130 kW for the Ariya, while the Leaf brochure lists CHAdeMO. Nissan estimates an Ariya charge from 20% to 80% in 35 minutes with the 63 kWh battery or 40 minutes with the 87 kWh battery at 130 kW. Those are manufacturer estimates at the stated power, not promises for every station or session; charging can vary with the station, battery state, temperature and other conditions. Nissan says its specifications reflect product data as of March 2024. Nissan’s 2024 Ariya press kit and 2024 Nissan Leaf brochure.
Home and workplace charging
Turpen reports that Level 1 or Level 2 access at home or work suited everyday Ariya use during his review. His reported maximum observed rate was 90 kW at the Electrify America chargers he used; that is one reviewer’s experience at those chargers, not a change to Nissan’s 130 kW stated maximum or a prediction for other sessions. If you need a home installation, a 240 V Level 2 J1772 charger may be an option, but confirm Ariya compatibility, your electrical capacity, installation requirements and warranty terms before buying equipment or arranging installation. The Leaf brochure’s charger guidance applies to the Leaf and does not establish that a particular charger is suitable for the Ariya. Nissan’s brochure gives illustrative Leaf Level 2 full-charge estimates of about 7 hours 45 minutes for the 40 kWh model and about 11 hours for the 60 kWh model; Nissan cautions that time and capacity vary with power source, ambient and battery temperature, battery condition and age, and accessory use. Those Leaf estimates should not be treated as Ariya charging times.
Check compatible public charging before relying on it
Nissan’s March 2024 announcement described a planned NACS adapter and access to compatible Superchargers. The review also discusses an optional adapter. Because availability and network access can depend on date and vehicle, verify the adapter and access arrangements that apply to the specific Ariya you are considering rather than assuming compatibility. What is the driving experience like?
Turpen characterizes the Ariya as capable, practical and comfortable, but not especially engaging to drive. He also finds its native infotainment interface dated. Drivers who mainly use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto may care less about the built-in interface, according to the review. Treat these as one reviewer’s subjective observations rather than universal judgments or comparative test results. New Atlas review, November 24, 2024.

- Consider it if your Leaf feels too small, your regular trips benefit from a higher-range configuration, and the Ariya’s crossover format and historical price premium fit your priorities.
- Compare carefully if you rely on public fast charging: check connector availability on your actual routes, and assess the specific Ariya trim rather than assuming every version offers the Venture+ range.
- Keep the Leaf in the running if a compact hatchback, lower original entry price or the Leaf’s charging setup better suits your needs. The two cars are not interchangeable on size, price or fast-charging connector.
For a used purchase, inspect the particular car’s trim, battery and charging equipment, and evaluate current local pricing independently. The original model-year MSRPs above do not establish present-day inventory or used-market value.
