The 2025 BMW M240i does not need to be a full M car to make a strong case for itself. Its 382-hp turbocharged inline-six, compact coupe body, quick automatic transmission, and available all-wheel drive make it one of BMW’s most convincing performance cars for daily use.
It is also not flawless. The steering gives little information about the front tires, the ride can be firm on rough pavement, the back seats are barely practical, and there is no manual transmission. Even so, the M240i remains a standout because it delivers serious pace without demanding the compromises of an M2.

The 2025 M240i is part of the second-generation G42 2 Series Coupe, which arrived for 2022. BMW made a light update for 2025 rather than replacing the car with an all-new model.

The interface is cleaner, but BMW has not restored physical controls for everything. Climate settings, seat heating, and steering-wheel heating are handled through the touchscreen or voice commands. That looks modern, but it is less convenient than a dedicated button when the driver wants to make a quick adjustment without looking away from the road.
The interior also gains waterfall-style ambient lighting around the center air vents, with nine selectable colors. The M240i comes with M Fine Brushed Aluminum trim and a flat-bottom M leather steering wheel featuring a red 12-o’clock marker and M-color stitching. Carbon fiber and open-pore wood are available if the standard aluminum finish is not appealing.
The B58 remains the main attraction
Under the hood is BMW’s 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six from the B58 engine family. For the U.S.-specification 2025 M240i, it produces:

The engine’s appeal is not limited to its peak output. It develops maximum torque from just 1,800 rpm and holds it through 5,000 rpm, so the car responds immediately in normal traffic and does not need to be revved hard to feel fast. It is smooth, quiet, and refined when driven gently, yet has enough reserve to turn an ordinary highway merge into a serious acceleration event.
BMW rates the rear-wheel-drive car at 4.5 seconds from zero to 60 mph. The xDrive version is rated at 4.1 seconds. Independent testing has produced an even quicker 3.6-second result, but that is an instrumented test figure under favorable conditions, not BMW’s official rating for every M240i.

The eight-speed automatic is an excellent match for the engine. It shifts quickly when the driver requests it and remains unobtrusive in daily driving. The absence of a manual is a disappointment for enthusiasts who see the M240i’s compact, rear-drive layout as an ideal candidate for three pedals. Buyers who insist on a manual BMW performance coupe have to step up to the M2.
Rear-wheel drive or xDrive?
The rear-wheel-drive M240i is the lighter choice, with a published curb weight of 3,748 pounds. The xDrive model weighs 3,871 pounds, but its extra traction helps it launch harder and makes it more reassuring in wet or snowy conditions.

The choice depends more on climate and priorities than on capability. The rear-drive car is the purer enthusiast option and has the lower starting price. xDrive is the faster option in BMW’s acceleration figures and the easier car to use year-round in regions with poor weather. Neither version offers a manual gearbox.
Both use a performance-oriented chassis with variable sport steering, 19-inch tires, and four-piston fixed front brake calipers. M Sport brakes are standard on the M240i rather than being an expensive upgrade from the basic 230i specification.
How it drives
The M240i’s compact dimensions are a major part of its appeal. At a time when many performance cars have become wide and heavy, the 2 Series Coupe still feels manageable on a narrow road or in a crowded parking garage. The short body and rear-biased character make it more playful than a larger BMW sedan, while the inline-six gives it the effortless speed of a much bigger car.

Grip and outright pace are not the problem. The bigger criticism is steering feel. The wheel is accurate enough, but it does not communicate much about what the front tires are doing. Drivers get less information about road texture and available grip than they might expect from a compact BMW performance coupe. That lack of feedback makes the car feel less special on a winding road, even though it remains quick and composed.

The ride is another compromise. The M240i is not brutally uncomfortable, but it is firm, especially when the road has large bumps, broken pavement, or sharp expansion joints. That firmness is acceptable for many owners because the car remains controlled, but shoppers expecting luxury-sedan softness should take an extended test drive over the roads they use most often.
In other words, the M240i is better at covering ground quickly than at delivering constant steering communication. It is a fast, stable, refined sports coupe—not the most delicate or tactile BMW in the lineup.
A 2+2 with a useful trunk
The front cabin is comfortable for adults, and the driving position is easy to tailor. The rear seats are a different story. The 2 Series is best understood as a 2+2, not as a genuine four-adult car.
Adults can technically sit in back, but access is awkward and legroom is limited. Regular rear-seat passengers will quickly make the M240i feel like the wrong vehicle. A child seat can be installed, although reaching the anchors and maneuvering the seat through the small opening takes patience.

Those figures describe launch-year pricing and should not be treated as a guaranteed price for leftover inventory or a used example in August 2026. Dealer discounts, options, mileage, condition, and local supply can change the transaction price significantly.

BMW service bulletin SIB 33 01 25 addresses rattling from the luggage-compartment area over rough roads on G42 2 Series Coupes with the B58D engine and option code 2VF Adaptive M Suspension. The procedure can involve replacing rear support bearings, auxiliary shock absorbers, stabilizer components, and stabilizer supports. The bulletin does not mean every car has the problem, but a test drive over broken pavement should be part of the inspection.
- Check the VIN for recalls. As of August 9, 2026, NHTSA campaign 26V438000 covers certain 2022–2025 BMW 2 Series Coupes. The issue involves an engine starter that can overheat and catch fire because of wear in an internal component. The remedy is starter replacement at no charge. Check the individual VIN through NHTSA rather than relying on a generic “no recalls” claim.
- Test the infotainment controls. Confirm that the center display, voice commands, climate functions, seat heating, and steering-wheel heating all work. The 2025 car routes several everyday controls through the touchscreen, so a malfunction can affect more than entertainment features.
- Inspect the tires and wheels. The M240i’s performance tires and 19-inch wheels can be expensive to replace, and bent wheels or uneven tire wear may indicate hard impacts or alignment problems.

Is it really one of BMW’s crown jewels?
