Renault Group says it will offer the Fireman Access patents free of charge to automakers and parts suppliers through a collaborative licensing platform. The vehicle-integrated feature gives firefighters a way to direct water into a traction battery when a fire spreads to it. The licence is conditional: applicants are screened, and licensees agree to share improvements with the community.
What Renault is sharing
On 18 February 2025, Renault Group announced that it would make the seven patents covering Fireman Access available to the global automotive industry under a free licence. The offer is aimed at manufacturers and parts suppliers, not individual vehicle owners. Renault described the initiative as the first practical expression of its road-safety commitment alongside the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety. “Free” does not mean an unrestricted public-domain release. Renault’s Universal Patent page invites automotive and industrial entities to contact the company or request a licence. Renault conducts integrity checks and reserves the right to refuse requests. Licensees also agree to make improvements available to other members of the collaborative community.
How Fireman Access works
Renault describes Fireman Access as an opening in the traction-battery casing, sealed during normal use by an adhesive disc. If a fire spreads to the battery, a firefighter’s high-pressure hose jet dislodges the disc. Water can then enter the battery enclosure and reach the cells. This is a feature integrated into a vehicle, not a retrofit or consumer fire-suppression product described by Renault’s sources. Its purpose is to give emergency responders a direct means of applying water to the battery after a crash or other incident has led to a battery fire.
What Renault says about response time and water use
Renault Group’s 2025 announcement says a battery fire can be extinguished “in just a few minutes, compared with several hours and ten times as much water without this feature.” Renault UK gives a more specific estimate, saying intervention time falls from several hours to around ten minutes. Both are Renault’s claims; the cited company materials do not provide an independent comparative study, test protocol, or sample details. They should not be treated as universal outcomes for every vehicle, battery, or fire.

Renault’s 2025 release also says that more than 5,000 firefighters had been trained in 19 countries. That is a company-reported road-safety figure, not an independently verified count in the cited material.
Where Renault said the system was fitted
At the time of its February 2025 announcement, Renault said Fireman Access was fitted on all electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles sold worldwide by Renault, Dacia, Alpine, and Mobilize. That statement reflects the company’s announcement at that time; the cited sources do not audit individual models or markets. It does not establish adoption by other automakers.

Why firefighters were part of the development context
Renault says its collaboration with firefighters began in 2010. The company describes training exercises involving vehicles and presents Fireman Access alongside other response aids, including rescue sheets and QR-code vehicle information. These tools address a broader practical issue: responders need vehicle-specific information and workable access during a time-critical rescue.
Christophe Lenglos, identified by Renault as a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Yvelines Fire and Rescue Department, described the urgency after a serious crash: “Every minute counts. Our primary goal as a first responders is to save as much time as possible with each call-out.” Renault Group feature on its work with firefighters

What the open licence does—and does not—establish
- It creates a route for industry use: automakers and parts suppliers can seek a free licence from Renault.
- It includes a sharing condition: licensees agree to make upgrades available to other community members.
- It is subject to screening: Renault says it checks applicants and can decline a request.
- It is not consumer access: the announcement does not describe a product consumers can buy or install.
- It is not evidence of wider adoption: the sources establish Renault’s offer and its own fitment statement, not use by other manufacturers.
For automakers considering the technology, relevant questions include compatibility with their battery enclosure designs, safe firefighter access, and independently documented results for intervention time and water use. Renault’s public materials explain its mechanism and licensing approach, but do not establish comparative performance against competing systems.
