Choose the Renault Kiger if a turbo-petrol engine, CVT automatic, 205 mm claimed ground clearance or 405-litre claimed boot is central to your decision. What separates the Kiger and Punch?
The Renault Kiger and Tata Punch are five-seat small SUVs aimed at buyers who want a compact footprint with a higher seating position. Their most important difference is the range of choices beneath the body shell.

Start with fuel and transmission
Fuel and gearbox requirements eliminate more versions than the badge does. Decide these first, then compare equipment and price within the remaining choices.
When the Kiger’s petrol range fits
Renault lists 72 PS and 100 PS petrol outputs for the Kiger. It also lists manual, AMT and CVT transmissions. That gives the Kiger a CVT route for buyers who want a conventional continuously variable automatic, as well as manual and automated-manual alternatives. The 100 PS engine is the relevant Kiger choice when the higher-output petrol option is required; confirm which engine and gearbox are paired in the exact trim you are considering.
Renault presents the Kiger as a petrol SUV. If your shortlist requires factory-fitted compressed natural gas, the Kiger’s listed powertrain range does not provide the same iCNG choice shown on Tata’s Punch page.
When the Punch’s fuel flexibility matters
Tata lists the Punch with petrol, iCNG and turbo-petrol options. The specification page identifies five-speed manual and AMT choices for petrol and iCNG, while the turbo-petrol version is paired with a six-speed manual. This makes the Punch the more relevant starting point for a buyer who wants CNG operation, but iCNG availability, trim and delivery timing should be confirmed with a local dealer.

The Punch’s turbo-petrol manual is not a substitute for an automatic. If you require an automatic, compare the Kiger CVT or AMT with the Punch petrol or iCNG AMT in similarly equipped trims. Do not compare a base manual Punch with a highly equipped automatic Kiger and call the price difference a model advantage.
Price: compare on-road totals, not starting numbers
Renault currently lists the Kiger from ₹5,81,000. The manufacturer identifies this as an ex-showroom figure, excluding local taxes, and states that the price applicable on the purchase date is final. It is therefore a starting reference, not the amount needed to register and drive the car away. See Renault’s Kiger prices and warranty page for the manufacturer’s qualification.
A current Punch price was not established in the reviewed official material. Rather than fill that gap with an old list price, request a written quote from a Tata dealer in your registration city. Taxes, registration, insurance, handling-related charges, accessories, exchange benefits and finance offers can change the final amount.

Use this quote method
- Choose one exact Kiger trim, engine and transmission and one exact Punch trim, engine and transmission.
- Ask both dealers for an itemised on-road quotation dated the same day.
- Separate mandatory registration and statutory charges from optional insurance, accessories and protection packages.
- Ask the sales consultant to state every discount’s expiry date and whether it depends on finance, exchange or a specific insurer.
- Compare the payable total, down payment, loan amount and total interest—not only the monthly instalment.
- Have the dealer write the manufacturing month, delivery estimate and price-validity period on the quotation.
For a budget framed as “below ₹10 lakh,” the final answer depends on city, tax structure and the chosen trim. A sub-₹10-lakh ex-showroom number can still become a higher on-road amount after registration and insurance.

Safety: equipment and crash-test results answer different questions
Do not merge a feature list with an independent crash assessment. They describe different kinds of evidence.
What Renault claims for the Kiger
In its 24 August 2025 update announcement, Renault says the Kiger has 21 standard safety features, including six airbags, electronic stability control, traction control, hill-start assist and ISOFIX across variants. Renault also lists safety-related and convenience equipment such as a multi-view camera on selected trims. “Standard” applies to the equipment claim made by Renault; it is not an independent crash-test score. Verify the fitment on the invoice and the vehicle delivered, especially if a dealer proposes a different model year.
What the Punch ICE assessment establishes
The Bharat NCAP Punch ICE fact sheet dated February 2026 identifies a five-star rating. It lists electronic stability control, curtain airbags, pedestrian protection and seat-belt reminders as standard across variants within that assessment. Treat the result as applying to the tested Punch ICE scope and assessment date. It should not automatically be transferred to a different fuel system, facelift, body configuration or future model without a matching assessment.

The dated fact sheet is stronger evidence for a crash-rating statement than an undated marketing summary. It still does not tell you every detail of a particular showroom car’s equipment, so check the exact variant’s safety sheet and walk around the delivered vehicle before registration.

- Premium Material: Crafted from premium EVA material, our car seat side gap filler boasts a combination of wear-resistant, softness&durability. Maintenance is effortless, simply rinse and wipe to quickly clean the dust and debris in corners and crevices
How to make a fair safety comparison
- Write down the exact variant, model year and powertrain for both cars.
- Confirm the number and location of airbags, ESC, ISOFIX, hill-start assistance, traction control and seat-belt reminders on that version.
- Record whether the evidence is a manufacturer fitment claim or an independent Bharat NCAP result.
- Ask whether an optional safety package is included in the quote or costs extra.
- Do not use an older Kiger rating as proof of the updated model’s score; the updated Kiger claim cited here concerns equipment, not a new independent crash result.
Clearance, boot space and daily practicality
Renault lists 205 mm of ground clearance and 405 litres of boot capacity for the Kiger. Those are manufacturer figures and useful when judging speed breakers, rough access roads and luggage needs. They are not a guarantee of clearance under every load condition, nor a measure of usable space with all seats occupied.
The reviewed official Punch specification extract did not provide a directly comparable clearance or boot figure. Avoid declaring a numerical Punch disadvantage from missing data. If these dimensions decide your purchase, ask the dealer for the current official specification sheet and measure the boot with your own stroller, suitcase or work equipment.
Check practical fit at the dealership
- Park both cars in the same area and sit in the driver’s seat with your normal driving position.
- Have the tallest regular passenger sit behind you; check knee, head and shoulder room rather than relying on exterior size.
- Load the largest item you carry regularly and check the hatch opening, floor height and seat-folding procedure.
- Drive over a representative speed breaker and a broken patch at low speed. Listen for contact and judge visibility from the actual seat.
- Test the reverse camera and parking sensors in daylight and shade. A multi-view camera, where fitted on the Kiger, is trim-dependent.
Equipment and trim matching
Feature names can hide large price differences. Build a simple requirement list before you compare brochures.
| Your requirement | What to verify | Why it changes the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic driving | Whether the quoted Kiger has CVT or AMT, or the Punch has petrol/iCNG AMT | CVT and AMT have different operating characteristics and are not equivalent transmissions |
| Maximum luggage | Published boot figure and physical test with your items | The Kiger’s 405 L claim may not predict the fit of every object |
| All-weather access | Ground clearance and underbody clearance on the actual load | Manufacturer clearance is a reference, not a loaded-vehicle guarantee |
| Seat comfort | Adjustment range and, where offered, ventilated front seats | Renault identifies ventilated seats as trim-dependent |
| Parking visibility | Camera type, sensor coverage and display on the exact trim | The Kiger multi-view camera is not listed as universal equipment |
The most reliable comparison is “same budget, same gearbox, similar safety equipment,” not “base model versus top model.” If one car includes an expensive convenience feature that the other cannot be ordered with, mark it as a preference rather than a universal superiority.

Ownership, warranty and service checks
Renault states that the Kiger carries a standard warranty of three years or 100,000 km, whichever comes first. Confirm what is covered, exclusions, roadside assistance, transfer conditions and scheduled-service requirements in the written warranty booklet.
A directly comparable current Tata warranty term was not established in the reviewed sources. Ask the Tata dealer for the current standard warranty and any paid extension, then compare duration, distance cap, exclusions and claim process with Renault’s terms. Do not assume the two policies are equivalent because both are new-car warranties.
Questions to ask before booking
- How many authorised service locations are practical from your home and workplace?
- What is the scheduled-service interval and typical labour scope for the chosen engine and transmission?
- Are consumables, roadside assistance and extended coverage included or optional?
- For an iCNG Punch, where can inspections and repairs be performed, and how does that affect service scheduling?
- What happens to warranty coverage if accessories, dash cameras or electrical equipment are installed outside the dealer?
Service access can outweigh a small specification difference when the vehicle is kept for several years. Get answers in writing and retain the signed quotation.
Which one should different buyers choose?
Choose the Kiger when the following is true
- You specifically want a CVT automatic rather than an AMT.
- You want the listed 100 PS petrol option or the choice between 72 PS and 100 PS outputs.
- The manufacturer-listed 205 mm clearance and 405 L boot suit your routes and luggage.
- You value Renault’s stated 21-feature safety package, including six airbags and ESC, while understanding that it is an equipment claim rather than a crash rating.
- The Kiger quote is lower on-road for an equivalently equipped version in your city.
Choose the Punch when the following is true
- You need an iCNG powertrain and accept its available manual or AMT configuration.
- You want a turbo-petrol Punch with a six-speed manual.
- The February 2026 Bharat NCAP five-star Punch ICE assessment is a major part of your buying decision and your chosen vehicle falls within its tested scope.
- The Punch trim provides the safety and convenience equipment you require at a better local on-road price.
- Your nearby Tata service network and delivery terms are more convenient.
When neither headline advantage settles it
If you are choosing between petrol automatics below a fixed on-road budget, drive the exact Kiger CVT or AMT and Punch AMT you can actually afford. Compare low-speed response, parking control, visibility, seat comfort and road noise on the same route. A specification-sheet preference should not override a transmission that feels difficult in your daily traffic.
A repeatable buying decision in six steps
- Set the non-negotiables. Write down fuel, automatic or manual requirement, maximum on-road budget, minimum safety equipment and boot needs.
- Shortlist exact versions. Select one Kiger and one Punch variant with similar safety and convenience equipment. Include the iCNG or turbo choice only if it matches your use.
- Verify current specifications. Check the live Renault and Tata pages, then ask the dealer to confirm model year, engine, transmission and standard equipment in writing.
- Drive both cars back-to-back. Use the same route, including traffic, a speed breaker, a tight parking manoeuvre and an open stretch. Note your observations immediately.
- Collect dated on-road quotes. Compare taxes, registration, insurance, accessories, discounts, finance costs, delivery timing and manufacturing month.
- Recheck the delivered car. Match the VIN, variant, airbags, camera, wheels, tyre condition, odometer, warranty documents and promised accessories before registration.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using ex-showroom price as the purchase budget: Renault’s ₹5,81,000 starting figure excludes local taxes and is not an on-road total.
- Comparing badges instead of powertrains: A Kiger CVT, Kiger AMT, Punch petrol AMT and Punch iCNG AMT deliver different ownership propositions.
- Calling equipment a crash score: Renault’s 21-feature statement and Tata’s Bharat NCAP fact sheet are different kinds of evidence.
- Applying a test result too broadly: Keep the Punch five-star result within the Punch ICE and February 2026 assessment scope.
- Assuming every trim has the same camera or comfort equipment: Renault identifies ventilated seats and a multi-view camera as trim-dependent.
- Ignoring warranty asymmetry: Renault’s three-year/100,000-km term is verified here; obtain Tata’s current written term before comparing ownership cost.
- Relying on an old internet quote: Ask for a same-day quotation in your registration city because taxes, offers and insurance change.
Final recommendation
Make the Kiger your first test drive if your priority is a petrol SUV with a CVT option, Renault’s listed 205 mm clearance and 405 L boot, or the 100 PS petrol choice. Make the Punch your first test drive if iCNG availability or the Punch ICE’s February 2026 Bharat NCAP five-star assessment is more important than those Kiger attributes.
The purchase decision should be made at trim level. Once you have matched fuel, gearbox, safety equipment and practical features, the deciding evidence is the written on-road quote and your experience in the exact cars—not a model-wide claim based on a base price or a single headline statistic.
