Choose the Renault Kiger AMT if avoiding clutch work is your priority, particularly for regular stop-and-go traffic. Choose the manual if you want direct control over every gear change or would rather keep the purchase price lower. The available evidence does not establish a real-world fuel-economy, reliability or lifetime-maintenance winner, so this is a preference and usage decision rather than a proven performance ranking.
This comparison applies to the India-market Kiger with Renault’s naturally aspirated 1.0-litre engine. The turbocharged Kiger uses a manual gearbox or a CVT, not the AMT discussed here.

What the Kiger transmission choice actually is
Renault’s current India configurator lists four powertrain combinations: a 1.0-litre naturally aspirated engine with a manual gearbox, the same engine with an AMT, a 1.0-litre turbo engine with a manual gearbox, and the turbo engine with a CVT. You can verify the live combinations in the Renault Kiger Configurator.
For the naturally aspirated version, Autocar India’s 24 June 2026 guide lists 72hp and 96Nm, with either a five-speed manual or a five-speed AMT. The turbo engine produces 100hp and 160Nm and is paired with a manual or CVT. A turbo manual-versus-CVT decision therefore involves different outputs and a different automatic technology; it should not be folded into an AMT-versus-manual verdict.

How an AMT differs from the manual
Manual transmission
In the manual Kiger, you select each gear and operate the clutch pedal yourself. That gives you control over when to hold a gear, when to shift and how to coordinate clutch engagement during starts, inclines and crawling traffic. It also requires continuous pedal work in congestion and more coordination when someone else is learning to drive the car.
Automated manual transmission
An AMT uses the basic concept of a manual gearbox but automates clutch operation and gear selection with electronic and hydraulic or electromechanical actuators. There is no clutch pedal for the driver. The system decides when to disengage the clutch, change ratio and re-engage it, while the accelerator and brake remain under your control.
That automation removes the repetitive work that many city drivers dislike. It does not turn the Kiger into a continuously variable or dual-clutch vehicle, and the available material does not provide a controlled Kiger test that measures shift smoothness, response time or acceleration against the manual. Expect the two versions to feel different and drive both before deciding.
Current trim availability
Autocar India’s 24 June 2026 guide lists the naturally aspirated AMT on the Evolution and Techno trims, and not on the top-spec Emotion. The naturally aspirated manual appears across the listed trim range in that guide. Renault’s configurator independently shows manual and AMT powertrains, but the live site and local dealer remain the final authority for the exact city and model year.

Match the same engine and trim when comparing prices or equipment. An Evolution manual should be compared with an Evolution AMT, and a Techno manual with a Techno AMT. Comparing a lower-trim manual with a higher-trim AMT confuses transmission cost with the value of additional equipment.
Price difference: what the published snapshot shows
The following figures are ex-showroom prices from Autocar India’s guide dated 24 June 2026. They are a dated reference, not a live quotation, and exclude registration, insurance, taxes or dealer-specific charges.

Renault labels prices in its configurator as ex-showroom figures for selected city limits and directs buyers to dealers for exact pricing. Check the current figure for your registration location at Renault’s configurator. Renault’s 2025 launch-release prices are historical and should not replace the live quote.
Choose the AMT when convenience is worth the premium
Frequent stop-start traffic
The strongest case for the AMT is repeated crawling in urban traffic. Removing clutch-pedal work can reduce fatigue during long queues, parking manoeuvres and slow approaches to junctions. This is a usage-based recommendation, not the result of a published Kiger city test. If traffic is the main reason you are considering the AMT, arrange a drive during the busiest period you normally encounter.
Several people will drive the car
An AMT can make the Kiger easier for drivers who are uncomfortable coordinating a clutch and gear lever. It may also simplify handovers between family members with different levels of manual-driving experience. Confirm that every intended driver is comfortable with the selector, creep behaviour and braking response during the test drive.

You value a clutch-free commute more than the lowest entry price
The cited price snapshot places the AMT ₹44,000 above the manual in Evolution and ₹50,000 above it in Techno. Treat that difference as the cost of automated operation, not proof that the AMT is mechanically superior. Include the full on-road quote and your financing cost in the decision.
Choose the manual when control and price matter more
You enjoy selecting gears
The manual leaves shift timing, gear choice and clutch engagement to you. That can be useful on winding roads, when holding a lower gear on a descent, or whenever you prefer to decide exactly how the engine responds. The 72hp, 96Nm naturally aspirated engine is the same basic powerplant in the matched manual and AMT versions, so the transmission choice—not a different engine output—is the central difference.
You want to spend less upfront
In both matched examples in the 2026 guide, the manual costs less. The saving may be more important than clutch convenience if your driving is mostly open roads, your annual traffic exposure is low, or you are working within a strict purchase budget.
You want to avoid automated-clutch components
The available sources do not establish Kiger-specific actuator failure rates, clutch life, repair bills or long-term reliability for either transmission. A manual also has wear items, including its clutch, while an AMT adds control hardware. Do not assume one will cost less over the life of the vehicle. Ask the dealer for the exact service schedule, warranty coverage and replacement terms for the model year you are buying.
Fuel economy: what you can and cannot conclude
Autocar India’s specification page lists claimed economy figures by variant, but the available material does not include a controlled, same-route AMT-versus-manual test of the Kiger. Claimed figures are not a substitute for comparable city driving, and traffic, road gradient, air-conditioning use, tyre pressures and driving style can move real consumption substantially.

Before purchase, record the official figure for the exact engine, trim and transmission in the current configurator or quotation. If fuel cost is decisive, seek owner data from comparable routes and model years, then repeat the same route in both cars if a dealer can provide test drives. Do not treat a headline variant figure as proof that the AMT or manual is the economy winner.
Performance and driving feel: test rather than assume
Both naturally aspirated versions use the listed 72hp and 96Nm engine, while the turbo versions use a different 100hp, 160Nm engine and different transmissions. No controlled acceleration, hill-climb, overtaking or shift-response results for the AMT against the manual are available. That means no evidence-based claim can be made that one Kiger is faster, smoother or better on a particular road.
During a drive, pay attention to the behaviours that affect your route:
- How easily you can move away from a junction without rushing the accelerator.
- Whether the AMT’s automated clutch engagement suits your pace in a traffic queue.
- How confidently the car reverses into a tight space and starts on an incline.
- Whether the manual’s clutch pedal and shift effort remain comfortable after 30 to 45 minutes.
- How much planning you need for an overtake or a quick merge on your usual roads.
Ask the salesperson to explain every selector position and any manual override available on the exact car. Only evaluate a feature after confirming that it is fitted to that variant.

Safety and equipment are not transmission advantages
Renault’s 2025 launch material describes the new Kiger as having 21 standard safety features and six airbags, including side and curtain airbags. The listed equipment includes electronic stability control, traction control, hill-start assist, tyre-pressure monitoring, three-point seatbelts and ISOFIX. The current Renault Kiger model page also lists 405 litres of boot space and 205mm of ground clearance.

Those are model-level or manufacturer-listed specifications; they do not establish a safety advantage for the AMT. Safety equipment can vary by trim and model year, so have the dealer identify the airbags and electronic systems on the exact vehicle in your quotation. Do not infer that an AMT has stronger crash protection or different stability control simply because it is automatic.
A practical same-day comparison procedure
- Configure identical cars. Select the naturally aspirated engine and the same trim, then switch only between manual and AMT. Save the current ex-showroom and on-road quotations.
- Inspect the equipment list. Check airbags, stability systems, parking aids, infotainment and other features line by line. Record any difference before attributing a price change to the transmission.
- Drive the manual first. Use a route containing a quiet start, an incline, a tight parking manoeuvre, a speed breaker and normal traffic. Note clutch effort, visibility and whether the gear ratios suit your pace.
- Drive the AMT on the same route. Repeat the starts, crawl, reverse and incline. Spend enough time in slow traffic to judge whether automated clutch operation reduces work or feels difficult to predict.
- Ask about service and warranty terms. Request the scheduled service intervals, clutch and actuator coverage, exclusions, roadside assistance and the price basis for repairs. Obtain the answers in writing for the exact model year.
- Recheck availability before booking. Confirm that the selected AMT or manual is still offered in your city, that the vehicle’s manufacturing date matches the quoted model year and that the final invoice has not changed.
Questions to put to the dealer
- Is this quotation for the naturally aspirated 1.0-litre engine, not the turbo-CVT version?
- Is the AMT available on this exact Evolution or Techno grade in my city today?
- Which safety features and airbags are fitted to this VIN and model year?
- What are the scheduled maintenance intervals for the gearbox, clutch and actuator system?
- What does the standard warranty cover if the clutch actuator or control module needs replacement?
- Can I test-drive both transmissions on the same route, including congestion and an incline?
- Which charges in the on-road price are government fees, insurance, accessories or dealer services?

Do not confuse the AMT choice with the turbo choice
A buyer attracted by stronger output may be considering the 100hp, 160Nm turbo engine. Its automatic option is a CVT, not the five-speed AMT paired with the 72hp, 96Nm naturally aspirated engine. Moving from the naturally aspirated AMT to the turbo CVT changes the engine, transmission and driving character at the same time. Decide first whether your priority is clutch-free operation at the naturally aspirated price point or the turbo powertrain, then compare transmissions within that engine family.
Bottom line for a Kiger buyer
The Kiger AMT is the sensible convenience choice when your daily route involves frequent slow traffic and you are willing to pay the documented premium in a matched trim. The manual is the rational value-and-control choice when you prefer to operate the clutch yourself or want the lower purchase price. Neither transmission has a proven fuel-economy, reliability or lifetime-cost advantage in the available evidence. Configure identical trims, test both on your actual route, and let the current dealer quotation and written warranty terms settle the final decision.
