First identify which Gordini you have
Renault used the Gordini name on several different cars. Renault Group’s historical model list dates the Dauphine Gordini to 1957–1967, the Renault 8 Gordini to 1964–1970, and the Renault 12 Gordini to 1970–1974. Those cars do not share the same body panels, rust pattern, or parts catalogue.

Where does a Renault Dauphine rust?
A Car Renault Norway Dauphine inspection bulletin (issue identified as 4/2000) calls out several recurring areas. Treat its list as a historical club guide, not a guarantee that every car has the same damage or that every repair will be inexpensive.
Wings
Inspect the complete wing panels rather than looking only for an obvious hole. The bulletin describes corrosion across the wings and specifically warns that wings are difficult to repair because their shape has few straight lines. A neat-looking patch can still conceal thin metal or distortion around the repair. Expect more fabrication and finishing time here than at a flat section of floor.
Areas below the headlights
Examine the metal below each headlight closely, including the transition into adjacent panels. Bubbling paint, uneven filler, open seams or a different surface texture indicate that the area needs cleaning back to sound metal before you estimate work. Do not accept a quick visual inspection through the lamp opening as proof that the surrounding structure is sound.
Door skins
Check both door skins for swelling, perforation and previous repairs. Open and close each door while watching the gaps and latch operation. A skin can be rusty while the door frame remains usable, but corrosion at edges or mounting areas may turn a cosmetic job into a replacement or fabrication exercise.
Chassis legs and crossmembers
These are structural inspection points. Look for layered corrosion, previous plates, crushed sections, distorted seams and repairs that do not follow the original load paths. Determine whether a patch restores the section or merely covers weakened metal. Structural welding should be assessed by someone experienced with unitary vehicle bodies before you set a final budget.

Floorpan between the boot and front seats
The bulletin identifies the floorpan section between the boot and the front seats. Lift carpets and remove loose sound deadening where possible; surface rust hidden by coverings is not an accurate indication of remaining thickness. Check both sides of the panel and the transitions into adjacent structural members, then document every perforation before cutting.
Front suspension turrets
Rust around the front suspension turrets deserves priority because these areas carry suspension loads. Inspect the turret metal, surrounding seams and any reinforcement for thinning or cracking. If corrosion reaches the attachment structure, do not treat it as a simple cosmetic patch.

Sills
Inspect the full sill length and compare the extent of corrosion with the adjoining front and rear wing areas, as the club bulletin advises. Probe carefully only after protecting yourself from loose scale, and use access openings or an inspection camera when available. Sill condition affects jacking points, door alignment and the shell’s rigidity, so record whether damage is limited to an outer skin or extends into inner structure.
A practical Dauphine inspection sequence
- Confirm identity. Photograph identification plates, body numbers, badges and trim before dismantling anything. Record the year and market because parts described as Dauphine may not be correct for a Gordini variant.
- Make the shell accessible. Remove carpets, loose trim and detachable liners where safe. Rust hidden behind upholstery or sound deadening cannot be classified from the outside.
- Map every affected area. Mark wings, headlight areas, door skins, chassis members, floor, turrets and sills on a body diagram. Photograph each area with a scale reference.
- Separate surface corrosion from perforation. Clean a small representative area to sound metal. Do not use a cosmetic coating to hide a section whose thickness you have not established.
- Check alignment and previous repairs. Measure door gaps, inspect weld quality and look for overlapping plates, filler or heat distortion. A car with less visible rust can still need more work if earlier repairs are poorly executed.
- Obtain a structural opinion. Have a marque specialist or experienced body technician inspect chassis legs, crossmembers, floor transitions, turrets and sills before you approve major cutting.

The available buyer guides do not provide a dependable general restoration price, rust-incidence percentage or labor benchmark. The extent of corrosion, access, previous repairs, fabrication quality and the condition of the rest of the car determine the real figure.
Are Renault Gordini parts hard to find?
For a Dauphine, body panels are a planning risk rather than a guaranteed catalog purchase. The older club bulletin describes sills as among the few panels then being remanufactured and says owners reported substantial fitting work. It also says other bodywork may require secondhand or new-old-stock pieces. A later buyer’s guide notes that some current Dauphine panel supply comes from Argentina, but it does not identify a guaranteed supplier or confirm stock for a particular Gordini shell.

Can you still buy Dauphine sill panels?
You may find a sill repair panel, but availability and fit are not established for every car. Contact the seller with photographs, measurements and the body number. Ask whether the panel is for a Dauphine rather than an R8 or R12, which side it fits, what material and gauge it uses, and whether the return policy covers a panel that requires modification.

Protect the panel from corrosion during the fitting process, but do not permanently weld it until door gaps, sill height and adjacent structural repairs have been checked.
Why Argentine supply needs verification
Argentina is identified in later buyer-guide coverage as a source of some Dauphine panels. That is a geographic sourcing observation, not proof of a specific manufacturer, current inventory or direct fitment. Confirm shipping, customs requirements, side and variant, and obtain clear photographs or drawings before paying for a hard-to-return body panel.
Plan the restoration around the shell, not the trim
- Freeze the specification. Decide whether the goal is an original Gordini, a sympathetic road car or a competition-style build. This affects which trim and mechanical parts justify long searches.
- Strip only as far as needed to expose structure. Keep reusable fasteners and label every piece, but prioritize access to floors, sills, chassis members and turrets.
- Write a metalwork schedule. Group work by structural area, then by outer panels. Repairing cosmetic panels before confirming shell geometry can force you to redo them.
- Source before cutting irreplaceable sections. Photograph the original profile and measure reference points. If a replacement panel is unavailable, those records help a fabricator reproduce the shape.
- Trial-fit adjacent panels. Door gaps, wing alignment and sill height must be checked together. A panel that looks correct on a bench may not fit a shell altered by earlier repairs.
- Protect completed metal. Seal and coat repaired areas according to the product manufacturer’s system, while preserving drainage and access for future inspection.
- Reassemble with a parts log. Record source, side, modification and remaining stock for every panel and trim item. This prevents an unverified substitute from being mistaken for a correct Gordini part later.
How to compare candidate cars or repair paths
There is no standardized score for Dauphine restoration difficulty. Compare cars and repair options using the same questions each time.

Use manuals for systems-specific work
Club Gordini’s manual index lists workshop material for the front suspension, engine, clutch, electrical system, gearbox, steering and brakes, along with historical technical articles. The index establishes that this material exists, but it does not establish that every item is a complete physical book, that every edition is still available, or that current ordering terms are unchanged.
Match any manual to the exact model and year before following specifications. Keep the body repair record separate from mechanical notes: a Dauphine manual will not make an R8 or R12 body panel correct, and a generic Renault procedure may omit Gordini-specific details.

Welding over scale or filler
Fix: expose sound metal first, document what is removed, and have structural areas reviewed before closing them.
Buying trim before proving the shell
Fix: reserve funds and storage space for structural metalwork. Scarce upholstery or badges cannot compensate for an unsafe or badly distorted body.

Verify every panel’s current availability and fitment, and do not assume Dauphine evidence applies to an R8 or R12.
