Renault Gordini Buying Guide: What to Check Before You Buy

Before buying a Renault Gordini, identify the exact R8 or R12 version, verify its paperwork and numbers, inspect the shell, test the mechanical systems and price defects from a specialist’s written estimate.

By CarCody Team

Identify the exact Gordini before you inspect its condition. A Renault 8 Gordini is a rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive saloon; a Renault 12 Gordini is front-engined and front-wheel drive. Both can wear blue paint, white stripes or a Gordini badge without being factory-built Gordinis. Match the car’s identifiers to its paperwork and history, then have a marque specialist inspect it—especially the shell, engine specification and previous repairs.

Start by establishing which Gordini is for sale

“Renault Gordini” is not one specification. The listing should identify the model, version, engine, gearbox and claimed year. Do not apply an R8 checklist to an R12, or assume that a familiar livery proves factory identity.

Model Factory layout Key versions and output Production information What to verify on the car
Renault 8 Gordini Longitudinal rear engine, rear-wheel drive, three-box saloon 1108 cc R1134, 95 SAE hp, four-speed gearbox; 1255 cc R1135, 1100/1300-generation history commonly distinguished by a five-speed gearbox and 110 hp range figures. Renault’s museum summary gives 1108–1255 cc and 95–110 hp, with 170–175 kph stated top speeds depending on version. Renault The Originals Museum gives production from 1964 to 1970 and over 11,800 cars. Renault’s historical overview separately records 2,626 R1134 1100s and 8,981 R1135 1300s. Type, chassis/body identifiers, engine number and specification, gearbox, front auxiliary tank on a 1300, four headlamps and documented provenance.
Renault 12 Gordini Front engine, front-wheel drive 1565 cc, 113 hp DIN at 6,250 rpm, front ventilated disc brakes and a stated 185 kph top speed. Renault’s historical overview says production ended in 1974 after 5,188 examples. Identity, 1565 cc specification, drivetrain, structural condition and whether competition-oriented equipment has been retained or altered.

Keep measurement conventions with the figures. The R8 history uses SAE horsepower for the 1108 cc engine, while the R12 museum specification uses DIN horsepower. Those ratings are not interchangeable. A seller who quotes a number without identifying its version or measurement standard has not yet established the car’s specification.

How to interpret the R8 generations

Renault’s historical account calls the 1100 a type R1134. The 1300/type R1135 appeared in October 1966 with a 1255 cc type 812-02 engine, five-speed gearbox, four headlamps and an additional 26-litre tank beneath the front hood. The engine, gearbox and tank arrangement should agree with the claimed version; a replacement engine or altered fuel system may be perfectly usable but changes what you are buying.

What makes the R12 different

Renault describes the R12 Gordini as a front-wheel-drive departure from the rear-engined R8 and states that it was the first front-wheel-drive Renault to enter competition with such a high level of power. Historical competition equipment included removed bumpers, tubular-frame front seats with stretched fabric and a rear seat reduced to foam blocks covered in anthracite material. Treat those details as context, not a universal road-car checklist: inspect the individual car and document every modification.

Before viewing: assemble an evidence file

Ask the seller for photographs and records before travelling. A sound-looking classic can still conceal a repaired shell, an incorrect engine or missing trim that costs more to rectify than the asking-price difference between two cars.

  • Request the registration document, chassis or body-number photographs, engine-number photographs, restoration invoices and dated images taken before paintwork.
  • Ask which parts are original, which are refurbished and which are replacements or transplants. Have the seller identify the gearbox as well as the engine.
  • Ask when the car last ran, how long it has been stored, and whether cooling, braking or electrical faults are currently known.
  • Confirm that a cold start is possible when you arrive. An engine already warm can hide difficult starting, smoke or an automatic-choke problem.
  • Write down missing brightwork, dashboard pieces, switches, seats, tools, wheels and trim before discussing price.

Identifiers should be compared with the paperwork, restoration records and claimed type/year. A 6 November 2003 Motorlegend buyer guide lists locations and ranges for R8 1134/1135 plates, but that dated secondary source is only a cross-check. Do not treat an old plate-location description as standalone proof; ask a Renault specialist to verify the identifiers and the continuity of the history.

Inspect a Renault 8 Gordini in this order

1. Examine the shell before the mechanicals

On an R8, structural condition comes first. Corrosion may be substantially worse underneath fresh paint. Inspect the inner wings, bulkhead, floors, sills and outer panels, looking for swelling seams, uneven gaps, rippled metal, rust bubbles, thick underseal and changes in panel texture. Raise the car safely or use a lift so the underside, suspension attachment areas and repaired edges can be seen rather than inferred.

  • 1/24 car in metal
  • Vehicle screwed on base, in blister: no box
  • A great gift idea!

Prior repairs are not automatically a reason to walk away. The relevant questions are whether the repair removed the damaged metal, whether the replacement sections are correctly shaped and welded, and whether the work was protected afterward. Ask for restoration invoices and dated photographs showing the shell before, during and after repair. A specialist should inspect seams and areas hidden by coatings; a magnet or paint-depth reading alone cannot establish structural quality.

  • High-risk evidence: fresh paint with no photographs, thick underseal hiding every seam, mismatched floor sections, perforation near suspension or bulkhead areas, and doors or lids that fit only after force.
  • Potentially acceptable evidence: clearly photographed metalwork, accessible welds, consistent panel gaps, documented corrosion treatment and a specialist’s written assessment.

2. Confirm identity, originality and engine specification

Record the body/chassis identifier and engine number yourself, then compare them with the registration papers and invoices. Confirm that the number format and location are plausible for the claimed R1134 or R1135, but have a marque specialist make the final assessment. Replicas are common, and a blue body with white stripes or a Gordini badge is not evidence of factory origin.

Determine whether the fitted engine is the correct 1108 cc or 1255 cc specification, a rebuilt original unit or a later transplant. A transplant can provide useful performance and reliability while reducing originality. Gordini engine parts are more highly stressed than ordinary road-car components, so the quality of the build, clearances, cooling and service history matter more than the mere presence of a desirable engine number.

3. Insist on a cold start and check cooling

Arrive with the engine cold. The buyer guide for R8/R10 cars notes that the automatic choke can be unreliable; difficult starting is therefore a diagnostic clue, not just an inconvenience. Listen from cold and as the engine warms:

  • COLLECTIBLE DISPLAY ITEM: Designed for collectors ages 14 and up. Intended for display by Renault enthusiasts, automotive collectors and diecast model fans, making an excellent gift choice.
  • Emulsion at the oil filler can indicate alloy-head corrosion or contamination and needs investigation.
  • Timing-gear rattling, a bottom-end rumble or excessive oil blowing may indicate a tired engine.
  • Check coolant level, the condition of the coolant and evidence of previous overheating or oil contamination.
  • Watch the temperature during the complete road test, not only during a short driveway run.

The guide describes R8 cooling as potentially marginal and recommends inhibitor. That is maintenance advice, not a diagnosis of every car. A cooling system that has been flushed, pressure-tested and documented is worth more than one that merely shows a normal gauge reading on a brief test.

4. Test the gearbox, mounts and rear suspension

Select every gear from cold and warm, accelerate and decelerate in each ratio, and check that the gearbox stays engaged. Worn shifting can worsen and gears jumping out under load is a serious defect. Ask whether the gearbox has been rebuilt and inspect for leaks around the casing and mounts.

Look at the rear suspension for corrosion and weak dampers. Negative rear camber is not automatically a deliberate lowered setup: failed gearbox mountings can produce an abnormal stance. Compare both sides, inspect mounting metal and have the geometry checked if the wheels do not sit symmetrically.

5. Check steering, brakes and handbrake operation

Feel for steering-rack play, knocks and delayed response around the straight-ahead position. During braking, the car should remain stable without pulling or juddering. Test the handbrake on a gentle incline and release it fully afterward. The buyer guide flags seizing handbrake linkage, calipers and rear discs after periods of disuse. A car that has been stored should have brake operation, hoses, wheel cylinders or calipers and tyres assessed together by a competent workshop.

6. Account for scarce trim and completeness

R8/R10 chromework can be difficult to find, and a complete, sound set is a meaningful advantage. Dashboard and switchgear components may also be hard to source. Photograph every missing or damaged item and obtain a parts-availability check and written repair estimate before agreeing a price. A cheap incomplete car is not necessarily cheaper once scarce trim, rechroming and interior work are included.

Inspect a Renault 12 Gordini without assuming it is an R8

The available buyer guidance is less detailed for R12-specific faults, so use a Renault specialist rather than transferring R8 weaknesses to the front-wheel-drive car. Start by confirming the claimed 1565 cc engine, 113 hp DIN at 6,250 rpm specification and the identity documents. Then inspect the shell, drivetrain, brakes and cooling in the same disciplined order used for any high-performance 1970s classic.

Check structural condition and previous changes

Look for corrosion, poor repairs, distorted panel gaps and water traps throughout the floor, sills, bulkheads, suspension pick-up areas and inner panels. Ask exactly what was removed or changed during restoration. A competition-style interior may be historically plausible, but missing bumpers, tubular seats or a foam-block rear seat should be documented modifications, not assumed factory equipment on every road car.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify the front-drive running gear

On the road, check clutch take-up, gear selection, acceleration under load, driveline vibration and steering response. Inspect driveshafts, joints, mounts and the front suspension for wear or damage. Confirm that the front ventilated discs and the rest of the braking system operate evenly. Have the specialist distinguish an original specification from a later upgrade and record whether the change improves usability at the expense of historical correctness.

Use a controlled road test

  1. Cold start: verify that the seller has not pre-warmed the engine; note starting effort, choke operation, smoke and abnormal noises.
  2. Idle and warm-up: watch the temperature, oil-pressure indication if fitted, charging behaviour and any leaks while the engine reaches operating temperature.
  3. Low-speed controls: test clutch, steering, handbrake, brakes and gear selection in a safe area.
  4. Progressive acceleration: use each gear, listening for timing, bottom-end or transmission noise and checking for hesitation or overheating.
  5. Load and overrun: lift off the throttle and reapply it; note gear jump-out, driveline backlash, vibration and smoke.
  6. Firm braking: brake progressively on a clear, dry road and check for pulling, judder or a pedal that changes height.
  7. After the drive: inspect for coolant, oil or brake-fluid leaks, recheck the temperature and make sure the handbrake and calipers have released.

Do not turn a road test into a high-speed demonstration. The purpose is to reproduce faults safely and give the specialist evidence for a lift inspection, compression or leak-down testing where appropriate, and a written estimate.

Compare two cars on the same decision axes

Decision axis Questions to ask Why it changes value
Identity and provenance Do identifiers, papers, invoices and claimed version agree? Is there a documented chain of ownership or restoration? Factory identity and a credible history are difficult to recreate; a badge or paint scheme is not proof.
Structural shell Where was metal replaced? Are welds accessible, sound and protected? Is corrosion hidden by coatings? Shell repairs can dominate the cost and complexity of restoration.
Engine and originality Is the engine correct for R1134/R1135 or R12 1565 cc specification? Is it rebuilt, transplanted or undocumented? A transplant may improve performance but changes originality and future buyer expectations.
Transmission and running gear Does every gear select and hold? Are mounts, dampers, steering, brakes and tyres serviceable? Immediate safety work and gearbox rebuilding can outweigh a modest purchase-price saving.
Completeness Are chromework, dashboard, switches, seats, lights and trim present and repairable? Scarce parts and specialist finishing can be expensive or slow to source.
Documented work Are there dated photos, invoices, measurements and descriptions of what was replaced? Evidence reduces the risk of paying for an unverified restoration story.
Correction cost What does a specialist’s written estimate say for structural, mechanical and cosmetic defects? Use real estimates and local market evidence rather than an old guide price.

For an R8, decide explicitly whether you want a documented, close-to-original car or a modified/transplanted performance setup. Neither is automatically superior; the mistake is paying an originality premium for a car that cannot substantiate it. For an R12, compare the claimed 1565 cc/113 hp DIN specification, identity and history, shell condition and changes from its competition-oriented equipment.

How to think about price when no current valuation is established

Do not use figures in the 6 November 2003 Motorlegend R8 guide as today’s value. That publication dates its own guide and warns that the prices may no longer reflect the market. No current transaction dataset or reliable valuation was established here, and the same limitation applies to the R12.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build a current, local comparison from cars with matching model, version, condition and documentation. Then subtract the cost of defects identified by a specialist. Obtain written estimates for shell repairs, engine or gearbox work, braking systems, tyres, trim and paint; include a contingency for hidden corrosion discovered after disassembly. A structurally sound, complete car can rationally cost more than a cheaper project, even when both wear the same livery.

Red flags that should change the deal

  • The seller will not provide identifier photographs or refuses an independent inspection.
  • The engine is warm on arrival despite an agreed cold start, or the temperature rises during a short test.
  • Fresh paint and thick underseal are unsupported by photographs or invoices.
  • Numbers, paperwork and the claimed type/year do not agree.
  • Gears jump out, the rear sits with unexplained negative camber, or the handbrake/calipers remain partly seized.
  • Missing R8 chromework or dashboard components are described as “easy to find” without a parts check.
  • An originality premium is requested for a car with an undocumented transplant or replica identity.

Pause the purchase when a defect affects the shell, identity or braking system. A specialist inspection is cheaper than discovering that a cosmetic bargain needs a complete structural rebuild.

What to put in the purchase file

  • Photographs of every identifier, the engine bay, underside, suspension mounts, repairs and trim.
  • Copies of registration documents, invoices, restoration photographs and inspection reports.
  • A written list of original, rebuilt, replacement and modified components.
  • The cold-start and road-test observations, including temperature behaviour and gear selection.
  • Written estimates for each defect and a record of the assumptions behind the agreed price.

This file helps a future owner understand the car and protects you from relying on an informal description that cannot be checked later.

Bottom line for an R8 or R12 Gordini buyer

Buy the documented car with the healthiest shell, not the car with the most convincing stripes. Establish whether it is an R8 R1134/R1135 or an R12, verify identifiers and specification, inspect structural metalwork with a specialist, complete a cold start and controlled road test, and price every correction from written estimates. Treat historical production figures as identification context—not proof of rarity or a current valuation—and treat any originality claim without evidence as unproven.
