Renault Clio V6 buying guide: choosing Phase 1 or Phase 2

The Phase 2 is the more developed road-going Clio V6, while the TWR-built Phase 1 offers earlier provenance and a more demanding chassis. Condition, originality and documented belt service should decide the purchase.

For most road buyers, a well-documented Phase 2 is the stronger choice because its revised rear-axle geometry, suspension and control systems make the car more developed. A Phase 1 remains desirable for its TWR-built provenance and more demanding original chassis character. In either case, condition, originality and specialist maintenance history matter more than the badge on the boot.

This is a mid-engined, two-seat, rear-wheel-drive Clio with very limited luggage space. It is not an easy car to drive quickly at the limit, and neither phase should be treated as a casual purchase. A specialist inspection, proof of major belt work and careful checks for body damage are essential.

What is the Renault Clio V6?

Renault introduced the Clio V6 concept at the 1998 Paris Motor Show. Road-car sales are described as beginning in 2000 by Renault’s heritage museum, while Renault Group Portugal describes commercialization in 2001. The difference reflects how the sources define announcement, production and market launch rather than two different cars.

Unlike a normal front-engined Clio, the V6 has its engine mounted behind the front seats, occupying the space where the rear bench would be. Both phases are two-seat, rear-wheel-drive cars with compact luggage compartments. The layout gives the car its distinctive proportions and sound, but it also makes access, servicing and everyday practicality unusually demanding.

Do not confuse either road-going phase with the Clio V6 Trophy race car. The Trophy was a competition model; a road car should be assessed by its road-car identity, registration documents and specification, not by race-car imagery or parts fitted for track use.

Phase 1 versus Phase 2 at a glance

Item Phase 1 Phase 2 How to read it
Development and production Developed by TWR and built by TWR in Uddevalla, Sweden Production returned to Renault Sport at Dieppe, in the former Alpine factory Provenance is part of the appeal, but verify the individual car rather than relying on appearance.
Power figure 226 hp in Renault’s heritage museum; 230 cv in Renault Group Portugal material 255 hp/cv in both cited Renault sources Published figures use different units and source conventions, so retain the attribution.
Torque 300 Nm in Renault Group Portugal material Not stated in the supplied Renault material Do not fill the Phase 2 cell with an assumed figure.
Chassis changes Original TWR-era rear-axle and suspension specification Revised rear-axle kinematics, suspension settings, firmer suspension, new damper stops, longer guide arms and reinforced subframes Phase 2 changes target control and consistency, not effortless driving at the limit.
Wheelbase and front track Baseline for comparison Renault Group Portugal states a 33 mm longer wheelbase and 23 mm wider front track PistonHeads assigns the 23 mm and 33 mm increases differently; do not combine the sources into one unqualified specification.
Gearing Earlier six-speed specification PistonHeads reports shorter final-drive gearing Confirm the transmission and any changes on the car you are viewing.
Exterior and equipment Earlier body and wheel treatment Revised front and rear styling, new air intakes, 18-inch wheels and more paint choices; Renault’s museum records a 13-colour palette Trim can be changed, so use documents and mechanical details to establish phase.

Which phase should you buy?

Choose Phase 2 for the more developed road package

The Phase 2’s 255 hp output, revised rear-axle kinematics and suspension changes are the clearest engineering reasons to prefer it for regular road use. Renault Group Portugal also lists firmer suspension, revised damper stops, longer guide arms and reinforced subframes. These changes are intended to improve control and confidence compared with the earlier car.

That does not make a Phase 2 benign. Specialist buying guidance still calls for care in fast bends and on wet roads. A worn example, a car with poor alignment or unsuitable modifications can undermine the benefits of the later specification.

Choose Phase 1 for TWR provenance and the original challenge

The Phase 1 is the TWR-developed and TWR-built car. Its earlier chassis character is more demanding, which is precisely what attracts buyers who want the first interpretation of the concept. The lower published power figure does not make it an inferior collectible; provenance, originality and condition can outweigh the numerical advantage of a later car.

Buy Phase 1 with realistic expectations. Less precise shift action is reported in specialist guidance, and the original chassis rewards a careful driver rather than one who assumes the car will correct mistakes.

Let condition decide when the cars are otherwise close

A straight, original Phase 1 with complete records is a better purchase than a neglected Phase 2. Conversely, a Phase 2 with missing belt history, damaged bodywork or undocumented suspension work is not automatically good value. Rank cars by identity, structural and cosmetic condition, maintenance evidence and inspection results before ranking them by phase.

How to establish a car’s phase and provenance

  1. Start with identity documents. Check the vehicle identification number, registration documents and recorded model description. Ask the seller to explain any mismatch between the documents and the advertised phase.
  2. Trace the production story. Phase 1 cars were produced by TWR in Uddevalla; Phase 2 cars were built by Renault Sport at Dieppe. A specialist can compare the car’s identifying details with period records.
  3. Separate factory equipment from later changes. Phase 2 styling, 18-inch wheels and additional colours are useful clues, not proof. Wheels, bumpers, intakes, suspension and interior parts can be replaced.
  4. Read the service file for phase-specific work. Specialist invoices should identify the car consistently and record major mechanical or chassis changes. Gaps, vague descriptions and unexplained parts deserve questions before a deposit is paid.
  5. Confirm whether modifications are documented. Ask who designed and fitted altered suspension, brakes, wheels, engine-control parts or body panels. A modification is not automatically bad, but unknown specification and unknown workmanship increase risk.

Inspection checklist before you buy

Use a technician who knows the Clio V6. The following points come from specialist used-car guidance and should be treated as a focused buyer’s checklist, not a substitute for the manufacturer’s complete inspection schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gearbox and shift quality

Drive the car fully warm and select every gear under different loads. Crunching shifts can indicate worn synchronisers. Phase 1 shift action may feel less precise even when healthy, so compare the sensation with a specialist’s reference car rather than condemning a car on feel alone. A seller who will not allow a proper drive has not provided enough evidence for a purchase.

Phase 2 injection-electronics recall and engine running

For a Phase 2, request documentary proof that the injection-electronics recall was completed. Investigate any misfire, hesitation or warning light instead of accepting a claim that the car simply needs a tune-up. Check ignition-coil condition and ask whether the fault has recurred.

Cambelt, dephaser and related work

Ask for dates and mileage for the cambelt and dephaser service, then identify the parts replaced at the same time. An invoice that says only belt changed leaves important questions unanswered. Have a V6 specialist assess whether the work matches the current maintenance schedule and the car’s mileage.

Rear suspension, bushes and ABS rings

Inspect suspension bushes closely; the specialist guide reports that they can wear quickly. Look for play, uneven tyre wear and deterioration in rubber components. Inspect the ABS rings and confirm that warning lights are not being hidden by a temporary repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Body panels, paint and evidence of impact

The wide body uses glassfibre-reinforced panels over a Clio body. Check panel gaps, fasteners, paint texture and the inside of each accessible panel for signs of poor repair. Clio V6-specific bodywork can be costly and scarce, so a cosmetic issue may be more than a routine body-shop job.

Front storage compartment and catches

Look for stone damage to the front spoiler, water ingress in the front boot and fragile or damaged bonnet catches. Lift carpets and inspect the compartment for dampness, staining and corrosion in adjacent hardware. Confirm that the bonnet opens, closes and latches securely.

Wheels, tyres and alignment

Check wheels for cracks, buckling and incorrect offsets, then inspect tyre age, matching and wear patterns. Uneven wear can point to worn bushes, incorrect alignment or accident damage. Do not treat expensive-looking wheels as evidence that the underlying suspension is correct.

Originality and repair quality

Record every non-standard part in the inspection report. Ask for photographs or invoices for repaired damage and replacement panels. A documented, professionally executed improvement may be acceptable; undocumented work makes it difficult to value the car or predict future repairs.

Maintenance requirements and ownership reality

Routine servicing

PistonHeads reports routine service intervals of 12,000 miles or two years. Confirm the current schedule with a qualified Renault V6 specialist because an interval in an old guide does not prove that every car has been maintained correctly. Review oil, filter, cooling, brake and electrical work as dated entries rather than relying on a stamped book alone.

Five-year cambelt and dephaser interval

The same guide reports cambelt and dephaser replacement every five years or 72,000 miles. Use whichever comes first as the trigger for investigation, then verify the actual work date and mileage. Ask what related parts were changed during the job and whether the invoice identifies the technician and parts used.

Use engine-out access to address related items

Engine access makes maintenance more involved, and the specialist guide suggests considering the water pump and clutch when the engine is out. These are planning recommendations, not a promise that every car needs both parts immediately. A specialist should inspect them and explain the evidence for replacement.

Daily checks are less convenient

The V6’s position makes even oil checks more involved than on an ordinary Clio. That inconvenience is one reason a regular specialist relationship matters. A clean engine bay or polished body cannot replace proof that fluid levels, leaks and scheduled work have been monitored.

Production numbers and what they mean for buyers

Renault’s Originals Museum records 2,822 Clio V6s in total, including 1,309 Phase 2 cars, and says production ended in July 2005. Renault Group Portugal reports 1,631 Phase 1 cars and 1,309 Phase 2 cars. Those figures do not add up to the museum’s stated total, and Renault Germany press material gives another first-phase number. Treat the count as source-dependent rather than claiming a settled Phase 1 total.

Rarity alone does not establish a fair price. A low-production car can still need major mechanical, body or electrical work. The useful question is how the particular car compares with other examples of the same phase, mileage, originality, provenance and documented maintenance.

Market, pricing and how to judge value

Historical asking prices and listings in the PistonHeads guide reflect that publication period. They are not verified current market values, and the available evidence does not establish a reliable present-day transaction average or regional valuation range.

Build your comparison from live cars in your own market. Record the asking price, phase, mileage, ownership file, belt date, originality, accident history, modifications and inspection findings. A car needing immediate belt work or body-panel repair should be compared with running examples only after estimating the specialist work required; do not subtract an invented average repair cost.

A sensible buying process

  1. Define your use. Decide whether the car is for occasional road driving, a collection or an event-focused build. The road-going Clio V6 has limited luggage capacity and two seats, so practical expectations matter.
  2. Shortlist by evidence. Prefer advertisements with clear identity, consistent photographs, mileage records and named maintenance work. Treat missing information as a reason to ask questions, not as proof of a bargain.
  3. Inspect before negotiating. Arrange an independent specialist inspection, including a lift inspection, diagnostic scan where appropriate, road test and review of the file.
  4. Price the immediate work. Include overdue belt/dephaser service, tyres, bushes, ABS components, leaks, body repairs and any recall evidence still missing.
  5. Verify the paperwork. Match the VIN and phase description across registration documents, invoices and specialist records. Resolve discrepancies in writing.
  6. Make the decision on the complete car. Choose the Phase 2 for its developed road package, the Phase 1 for its TWR origin and character, or walk away from either if the evidence and condition are poor.

Common buyer mistakes

  • Buying the phase, not the car: a later chassis cannot compensate for neglected servicing or hidden accident damage.
  • Assuming a recall was completed: request documentary evidence for Phase 2 injection-electronics work.
  • Accepting a vague belt invoice: confirm dates, mileage, dephaser work and associated parts.
  • Ignoring body scarcity: damaged Clio V6-specific fibreglass panels may be difficult and expensive to source.
  • Using a general inspection only: engine access, phase-specific suspension and unusual bodywork justify a V6 specialist.
  • Comparing historical adverts with today’s market: old asking prices do not establish current value.
  • Treating race-car parts as proof of desirability: the Clio V6 Trophy is a separate competition context, not a shortcut to validating a road car.

Verdict: Phase 1 or Phase 2?

Buy a Phase 2 when you want the more developed road-going package and can find one with original structure, correct specification and complete specialist records. Buy a Phase 1 when TWR provenance and its more demanding original chassis are central to the experience you want. In both cases, reject cars with uncertain identity, overdue major service work, poor repairs or unexplained modifications. The best Clio V6 is the example whose history and inspection findings make its phase an informed choice rather than a gamble.
