Choose a Lancia Delta HF Integrale if four-wheel-drive rally history, traction and the evolution of a successful hatchback-based competition car matter more. They are both rally-bred icons, but they represent almost opposite engineering solutions. The Renault puts its turbocharged engine behind the occupants and sends power to the rear wheels; the Delta HF family uses permanent all-wheel drive. Your decision should start with that difference, then narrow to the exact Renault or Delta version.

The comparison is not a claim that one car is universally faster or more enjoyable. The available specifications cover different versions and, in the Delta’s case, separate road and Group A rally cars. They establish the cars’ concepts and histories, not a modern back-to-back road test.

Why the layouts create such different cars
Renault’s mid-rear, rear-wheel-drive idea
Renault’s official heritage account describes the Renault 5 Turbo as rear-mid-engined and rear-wheel drive. Moving the engine into the rear of the cabin displaced the normal rear seat, turning an ordinary supermini shape into a purpose-built performance package. That architecture is the Turbo 2’s defining feature: the car is small outside, but its engine is behind the occupants rather than ahead of them.
For a buyer, this layout is a reason to choose the Renault even before considering horsepower. It is mechanically unusual, visually dramatic and closely tied to the car’s rally purpose. Calling it more agile, more difficult or more entertaining than the Delta would require a controlled road comparison; those are driving judgments, not conclusions established by the specifications here.

Lancia’s permanent all-wheel-drive strategy
The Delta HF line took a different route. Stellantis Heritage describes four generations of all-wheel-drive Delta HF cars from 1986 into the early 1990s. Permanent all-wheel drive gave the Delta a traction-focused identity and allowed Lancia to develop one road-car family alongside its Group A rally program.
The Delta also began as a hatchback-derived concept, so its appeal is different from the Renault’s. It looks like a compact practical car transformed for competition, whereas the Turbo 2 looks and feels like a special-purpose mid-engine machine. Neither description makes the other obsolete; they appeal to different ideas of what a rally car for the road should be.
Renault 5 Turbo 2: the exact car you are considering
Turbo family versus Turbo 2
“Renault 5 Turbo” can mean the entire family, while “Turbo 2” identifies a particular evolution. Renault says the production car was officially launched in 1980 after a 1978 show-car reveal. Its official heritage page reports 4,857 Renault 5 Turbo family cars in total. That is not the Turbo 2 production number.
The Turbo 2 arrived in 1983. Lane Motor Museum explains that Renault used more stock Renault 5 components and replaced many of the original Turbo’s light-alloy parts to reduce production cost while retaining performance. The museum lists 3,183 Turbo 2s produced. When checking an advert or chassis documentation, make sure the seller is not using the 4,857 family figure as though it described Turbo 2s alone.
Turbo 2 road-car specification
Lane Motor Museum’s entry for a 1983 Renault 5 Turbo 2 lists a turbocharged 1,379 cc four-cylinder engine, 158 hp, a five-speed manual transmission and mid-engine/rear-wheel drive. Those figures describe the specific museum car entry, not every Renault 5 Turbo variant.

Renault’s broader heritage page gives engine sizes from 1,397 to 1,527 cc and power from 160 to 350 hp across the Turbo family. That range includes different road, evolution and competition versions. It should not be used to assign 350 hp to a standard Turbo 2, or to treat the 1,379 cc museum specification as a universal family specification.
Rally associations and collector appeal
Renault identifies Cévennes, Tour de Corse and Maxi Turbo competition versions in its heritage material. The company says the Renault 5 Turbo made a strong impression and became “a cult car, highly sought after by collectors,” a description attributed to The Originals Renault Museum / Renault. Lane Motor Museum likewise describes the Turbo 2 as intended for rallying while also being popular as a road-legal car.

A US buyer should therefore confirm whether a particular car is one of those officially imported examples, a later import or a car with a different market history.
Lancia Delta HF Integrale: identify the generation first
HF 4WD, Integrale, 16V and Evoluzione are not one specification
“Delta Integrale” covers a sequence of cars rather than a single unchanging model. Stellantis Heritage describes four all-wheel-drive HF generations beginning in 1986 and continuing into the early 1990s. The family includes the HF 4WD, the 1988 Integrale development, the 1989 16-valve model and the 1991 Evoluzione.
That sequence changes what a buyer can reasonably expect from a car advertised simply as an “Integrale.” Ask for the year, exact badge, engine and drivetrain documentation before comparing it with a Turbo 2. A 1987 HF 4WD and a 1991 Evoluzione belong to the same celebrated lineage but are not interchangeable specifications.

The 1987 HF 4WD road and rally cars
Stellantis lists the 1987 Delta HF 4WD road model with a 2.0-liter engine producing 165 hp. Its Group A rally version is listed at 265 hp at 6,250 rpm. Those numbers illustrate why road and competition specifications must be kept separate: the rally car’s output is not the output of an original showroom HF 4WD.
What changed through the later updates
According to Stellantis’ heritage account, the 1988 Integrale gained widened wheel arches to accommodate wider tires and larger front air intakes. The same account associates a six-speed gearbox and weight reduction with that evolution. In 1989, Lancia identified a 16-valve model, followed by the Evoluzione in 1991. Do not automatically assign any one of those changes to every car carrying an Integrale name; verify the particular generation.
Which car has the stronger rally history?
The Delta’s documented WRC record
For the Delta HF line, Stellantis Heritage reports six World Rally Constructors’ Championships from 1987 through 1992, four Drivers’ Championships in 1987–1989 and 1991, and 46 overall wins in WRC-counting rallies. These are achievements for the Delta HF family across its generations, not a claim that every road-going Integrale has identical competition equipment.
The Renault’s competition story is different
Renault’s heritage material emphasizes the Turbo family’s competition evolutions, including Cévennes, Tour de Corse and Maxi Turbo versions, and records the model’s strong impact on rally culture. The cited material does not provide a directly comparable total of WRC constructors’ titles or victories for the Turbo 2. It is therefore accurate to say that the Delta has the stronger documented WRC record in these sources, but not to turn that aggregate record into a head-to-head result between two specific road cars.
Choose the Renault 5 Turbo 2 if these priorities sound like you
You want the most unusual mechanical layout
The Renault is the clear choice when a mid-rear engine and rear-wheel drive are central to the purchase. Its engine location, two-seat-focused cabin arrangement and compact dimensions are not cosmetic details; they define the car’s identity.

You are buying a collector-focused special
The Turbo 2’s documented production of 3,183 cars and Renault’s description of the Turbo as a cult collector car support its appeal as a scarce, distinctive object. That does not establish a current market value, but it does explain why originality, provenance and correct version identification deserve priority during a purchase.
You prefer a simpler story to explain at a car meet
“Turbocharged mid-engine Renault 5 with rear-wheel drive” communicates the car’s purpose immediately. If you enjoy the engineering story as much as the competition results, the Turbo 2 offers a particularly concentrated example of rally technology adapted to a road-legal compact.

You are drawn to permanent all-wheel-drive rally history
The Delta is the better fit when the car’s permanent AWD system and the 1987–1992 championship run are the main attraction. Its six constructors’ titles, four drivers’ titles and 46 WRC wins give the family an unusually substantial documented record.
You want to follow an evolutionary lineage
The HF 4WD, Integrale, 16V and Evoluzione show a visible progression from the 1986 all-wheel-drive model through the later updates. A buyer who enjoys comparing body changes, engine-valve layouts and competition development may find that progression more compelling than the Renault’s narrower Turbo 2 identity.
You prefer the idea of a rally-developed hatchback
The Delta’s hatchback-derived form and traction-oriented drivetrain create a different emotional connection: it is a compact road car whose competition success was built through continuous development. Choose it when that combination matters more than the Renault’s mid-engine layout.

Which one costs less?
No current, market-specific asking-price or auction-value data is established here for either a Turbo 2 or a particular Delta generation. Production totals alone cannot determine today’s price. Condition, originality, location, documentation and exact version can all change the figure, so compare current listings or recent sales for the precise car you are considering.
Which one is cheaper or easier to maintain?
The cited material does not establish comparative maintenance costs, parts availability, reliability or service intervals. Do not label either model the economical or dependable winner without version-specific inspection and contemporary ownership evidence.
Which one is better every day?
The sources establish layouts, power figures, production and rally history, but not comfort, noise, fuel consumption, luggage capacity or modern traffic behavior. - Identify the exact version. For the Renault, establish whether the car is a Turbo, Turbo 2 or another competition evolution. For the Lancia, record whether it is HF 4WD, Integrale, 16V or Evoluzione.
- Match the specification to the badge. A Turbo 2 listing should be consistent with the 1,379 cc, 158 hp, five-speed manual specification cited by Lane Motor Museum; a 1987 HF 4WD should not be represented by the 265 hp Group A rally figure.
- Verify production and import claims. Use 3,183 for Turbo 2 production, 4,857 only for the Renault 5 Turbo family, and treat the approximately 250 US imports as an estimate rather than an exact registry count.
- Check provenance and originality. Rally replicas, modified road cars and competition conversions can look similar in photographs. Confirm chassis identity, engine, gearbox, bodywork and documentation.
- Separate history from condition. A famous badge does not prove that a particular car is mechanically sound. Commission an inspection by a specialist familiar with the exact drivetrain and model year.

Pick the Renault 5 Turbo 2 when the defining experience is a rare, compact, mid-rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive car with a five-speed manual and a direct link to Renault’s Turbo competition program. Pick the Lancia Delta HF Integrale when permanent all-wheel drive, an evolving family of HF generations and the Delta’s six-title WRC record are the deciding factors.
