Renault 5 Turbo 2 Buyer’s Guide: Common Problems, Parts and Maintenance

Before buying a Renault 5 Turbo 2, verify identity and provenance, inspect the shell and chassis, test cooling, turbo, fuel injection, compression, suspension and brakes, then confirm manuals and parts support.

By CarCody Team

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest way to buy a Renault 5 Turbo 2 is to make the car prove its identity, structure and mechanical condition before you negotiate on price. Have a specialist who knows the model inspect the shell and chassis, cooling system, turbocharger, fuel injection, compression, gearbox, suspension and brakes. A long road test must include a fully warm restart. Overheating, smoke, lost boost, hot-start difficulty, an uneven idle and rust are useful warning clues reported by a secondary buyer’s guide, but no published denominator or reliability study establishes how often they occur. Treat them as prompts for testing, not as failure probabilities.

This guide explains what to verify, which documents and parts channels exist, how Turbo 2 differs from Turbo 1, and how to compare two individual cars without mistaking a low odometer reading or a fresh cosmetic restoration for proof of condition.

What a Renault 5 Turbo 2 is—and what must be proven

The Renault 5 Turbo is described by Car Collector International’s undated buyer’s guide (page crawled in 2026) as a mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive car with a turbocharged 1.4-litre inline-four and five-speed manual gearbox. The guide characterizes the later Turbo 2 as retaining that engine specification while using more standard Renault 5 body panels and interior trim than Turbo 1.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That description is useful orientation, not a substitute for checking a particular car. The same guide gives approximate production totals of 1,820 Turbo 1 cars and 3,160 Turbo 2 cars. Those figures are not presented here as a definitive factory production record; no primary production register was identified. Rarity makes identity and provenance especially important: a correct-looking shell can contain non-original panels, a replacement drivetrain or undocumented structural work.

Turbo 1 and Turbo 2 in practical buying terms

Area Turbo 1 Turbo 2 What to verify on a Turbo 2
Body and trim The cited guide describes bespoke aluminium panels and a dedicated interior. The cited guide describes more standard Renault 5 panels and trim. Confirm that the car is represented accurately and that replacements or conversions are documented.
Engine and layout The guide describes a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, turbocharged 1.4-litre inline-four and five-speed manual. Match the engine, gearbox and installation to the car’s paperwork and inspect for undocumented modifications.
Rarity figures Approximately 1,820, according to the undated guide. Approximately 3,160, according to the undated guide. Use the figures as context only, not as a valuation formula or proof of authenticity.
Best purchase criterion No version is automatically the better buy. Prioritize identity, structural condition, repair quality, mechanical evidence, originality, records and parts access.

Start with identity, paperwork and provenance

Before inspecting paint or listening for turbo noise, establish exactly what the seller is offering. Record the vehicle identification number and compare it with the title or registration, import documents, historic invoices and any factory or club records. Ask for a continuous ownership timeline, not just the most recent bill of sale. Gaps are not automatic disqualifiers, but they should be priced as uncertainty.

  • Check that the VIN or chassis identity is legible, consistent across documents and located where the model’s documentation says it should be.
  • Ask whether the engine, gearbox, body panels, interior and wheels are original, period-correct replacements or later upgrades.
  • Request photographs of the car before restoration and invoices for shell repairs, paint, engine work, turbocharger work and gearbox work.
  • Look for evidence of accident repair, corrosion removal and changes made in different countries or ownership periods.
  • Confirm whether the car is a genuine Turbo 2 rather than a standard Renault 5 converted to Turbo-style appearance.

A specialist inspection should include a lift and permission to remove trim or access inspection points where necessary. A seller who will not provide the VIN, cold start or adequate inspection time has increased your risk before the mechanical examination begins.

Inspect the shell, chassis and corrosion repairs

Rust and poor structural repairs are among the most consequential findings because cosmetics can hide them and a correct mechanical rebuild cannot compensate for a weak shell. The buyer’s guide specifically calls out corrosion at sills and wheel arches and advises examining the underside, chassis and repair quality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Exterior and visible structure

  • Inspect sills, wheel arches, door bottoms, seams, floors, engine-bay edges and the areas around suspension and subframe mountings.
  • Look for mismatched texture, waviness, overspray, fresh underseal or paint that stops at an inaccessible edge. These can indicate repairs rather than routine protection.
  • Use a paint-thickness comparison across adjacent panels, but do not treat a meter reading as a structural test.
  • Check panel gaps, door and hatch alignment and whether fasteners show repeated removal.

Underside and chassis

On a lift, inspect the floor, rails, jacking points, bulkheads, suspension pick-up areas and seams. A specialist should distinguish a sound, documented repair from filler over corrosion or a distorted structure. Ask for photographs before and after repairs and the name of the shop that performed them. If the underside is covered in recent coating, insist on evidence of what was repaired underneath or budget for careful removal and reinspection.

Mechanical inspection: the systems that deserve specialist attention

Cold start and compression

Arrive with the engine genuinely cold; a pre-warmed car can conceal hard starting, smoke or an unstable idle. Observe cranking speed, oil pressure behavior if the car has a gauge, exhaust smoke and the time required to settle into a steady idle. The guide recommends checking compression or leak-down condition. Have a qualified technician perform and record the test with the engine at the specified temperature and throttle position, then compare cylinder-to-cylinder results rather than relying on one number without its test conditions.

Cooling system and overheating clues

Inspect the radiator, hoses, expansion tank, clamps, fans, wiring, water pump area and coolant condition. Look for staining, an unexplained loss of coolant, a pressurized system before the engine is warm, or signs that coolant has been expelled. During a sufficiently long road test, monitor temperature under traffic, steady cruising and boost. The cited guide lists overheating as a reported problem area; it does not establish a failure rate. A temperature that rises only after the car is heat-soaked still requires diagnosis.

Turbocharger, boost and exhaust smoke

Check the turbocharger for shaft play, oil leakage, damaged compressor or turbine blades, cracked housings and insecure hoses. Inspect the wastegate and boost-control plumbing for poor repairs or disconnected lines. Under controlled acceleration, note whether boost builds progressively and whether the engine emits blue, white or persistent black smoke. Smoke or lost boost are reported inspection clues, not proof of a failed turbo: the cause may also be lubrication, fuelling, ignition, a hose leak or an exhaust problem. A specialist should test the system before you authorize an expensive turbo replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fuel injection and hot-start behavior

Allow the car to reach full operating temperature, switch it off for a short heat soak and restart it. Hot-start difficulty, an uneven idle or hesitation can point toward the fuel-injection system, although other faults can produce the same symptoms. Check fuel lines, filters, pumps, electrical connections and signs of leakage. Record whether the symptom occurs cold, hot, under load or only after sitting; that pattern helps a specialist avoid replacing parts by guesswork.

Gearbox, clutch and driveline

During the road test, select every gear when cold and hot. Listen for bearing noise that changes with clutch-pedal position, check for baulking or jumping out of gear, and feel for clutch slip under load. Inspect driveshafts, CV joints, mounts and leaks on the lift. The guide emphasizes confirming gearbox and engine parts availability; an unusual transmission component can turn a small defect into a long restoration delay, so identify the exact specification before purchase.

Suspension, steering and brakes

Inspect springs, dampers, bushes, ball joints, steering joints, wheel bearings, brake discs or drums, calipers, hoses and hard lines. Uneven tyre wear can indicate alignment, bent components or worn bushes. On the road, check straight-line stability, steering return, brake pull, pedal firmness and vibration. A brake system that feels acceptable on a short drive may show fade or pull after repeated stops; test it safely and legally, then inspect temperatures and leaks.

Use the road test to expose heat-related faults

A brief lap around the block is insufficient. The buyer’s guide recommends a sufficiently long drive so heat-related symptoms can appear. Agree the route and conditions in advance and record observations rather than relying on memory.

  1. Start from cold and note cranking, smoke, idle quality and warning lights.
  2. Drive gently until coolant and oil are at normal operating temperature; watch for leaks, smells or abnormal temperature movement.
  3. Use progressive acceleration through the gears, listening for detonation, misfire, drivetrain knocks and inconsistent boost.
  4. Include steady-speed running and stop-start traffic where safe, then repeat acceleration after heat soak.
  5. Park, switch off for a short period and perform a hot restart. Record any extended cranking, stalling or uneven idle.
  6. After the drive, inspect for coolant, oil or fuel leaks and ask the technician to scan or test any warning system fitted to that individual car.

An owner-forum index includes the German title “Laufprobleme/Ruckeln über…” (“running problems/jerking…”). That heading demonstrates the kind of symptom owners discuss; it does not establish that the defect is widespread or that a particular component is responsible.

Documentation: finding the correct MR 221 material

Renault’s The Originals Services historical-manual catalog identifies an R5 turbo / MR 221 manual in its collection of historic repair and parts manuals. A specialist documentation retailer also advertises MR 221 repair documentation, PR 1073 parts lists and Renault 5 Turbo owner handbooks. These listings establish that model-specific documentation channels exist; they do not prove that a particular edition is complete, currently in stock or correct for every Turbo 2.

The catalog’s exact Dutch wording is: “Raadpleeg onze reparatiehandleidingen en onderdelenhandleidingen voor je iconische Renaults.” Before paying for a manual, confirm its language, revision, legibility, included supplements and whether it covers your car’s Turbo 2 configuration. Match procedures and specifications to the vehicle’s identity rather than applying a generic Renault 5 manual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Documentation checklist

  • Obtain the MR 221 repair manual or an equivalent authoritative edition appropriate to the car.
  • Use the PR 1073 parts list to identify assemblies and part references, while checking supersessions with a specialist.
  • Collect owner handbooks, wiring information, gearbox and engine records, and invoices for major work.
  • Record the manual edition and revision in the car’s file so future owners know what was used.
  • Ask a specialist to resolve any conflict between a retailer’s description and the car’s actual variant.

Parts planning before you commit

Parts support is a purchase criterion, not a restoration detail to solve later. The buyer’s guide advises confirming availability of model-specific bodywork, electronics, gearbox and engine parts. A retailer lists relevant documentation and parts, and an owners’ forum has technical and parts-seeking sections, but neither source proves current stock for a specific component.

Build a parts-risk list

  1. List every nonstandard or visibly worn item found during inspection, including trim, lights, body sections, wiring, cooling hardware, turbo components, gearbox parts and brake pieces.
  2. For each item, record the original reference, acceptable alternatives, condition of the fitted part and whether a specialist can repair it.
  3. Call or email suppliers with the exact model, year or chassis information and ask whether the part is physically in stock, made to order or merely catalogued.
  4. Price shipping, taxes, fabrication and lead time. A listed part without a delivery commitment is not a completed repair plan.
  5. Keep the seller’s answers with the inspection report so a future change in availability is traceable.

Prioritize structural and safety-critical parts first. Cosmetic trim may be difficult to source, but a questionable suspension mount, brake component or cooling part should influence the purchase decision immediately.

Maintenance planning after purchase

Even a lightly used collector car ages while parked. The buyer’s guide recommends budgeting annually and paying particular attention to old fluids, tyres and rubber components. That is a practical recommendation, not a verified Renault service interval. Establish a baseline when the car arrives instead of assuming low mileage means deferred maintenance is harmless.

Baseline work to document

  • Record compression or leak-down results, coolant condition, oil and filter condition, fuel-filter condition and fluid leaks.
  • Date-code tyres and inspect sidewalls, tread and storage damage; replace unsafe tyres regardless of mileage.
  • Replace or test aged hoses, belts, seals, fuel lines and other rubber components according to the correct manual and specialist advice.
  • Inspect brake fluid, hoses, discs, pads, calipers and parking-brake operation.
  • Check battery, charging, grounds, connectors, fuses and heat-damaged wiring.
  • Grease or service mechanical joints where specified and record every part number fitted.
  • Set a repeatable inspection routine for leaks, coolant level, tyre pressure, boost behavior, brake feel and unusual noises.

The guide estimates annual running costs of $5,000–$18,000 and typical collector mileage of 1,000–4,000 miles. Those are the guide publisher’s estimates; its methodology and geography are not established, so use them only as a rough planning range, not as a universal ownership cost or service schedule.

How to compare two Turbo 2 examples

Compare evidence, not advertisements. A lower asking price can be rational when the car has complete records and a sound shell, while a highly polished example can conceal undocumented structural work. Use the same inspection sequence and ask each seller the same questions.

Comparison axis Questions to answer Why it changes the decision
Identity and provenance Do VIN, documents, ownership history and variant description agree? Unresolved identity risk can overwhelm apparent condition or rarity.
Structure and repairs Are sills, arches, floors, chassis and mounting points sound, and are repairs documented? Structural corrosion and poor repairs are costly and safety-critical.
Mechanical evidence Are cold-start, hot-restart, cooling, boost, compression and leak findings recorded? Measured evidence is more useful than a short demonstration drive.
Originality Which panels, trim, engine, gearbox and controls are original or replaced? Correct parts affect authenticity, future maintenance and resale expectations.
Service records Are invoices dated, itemized and tied to mileage or ownership? Records show what was actually done and reveal long periods of uncertainty.
Parts and specialist access Can required body, electronic, gearbox, engine, cooling and brake parts be sourced? A repair that is technically possible may still be impractical without parts or expertise.

Costs, mileage and market evidence: keep the labels attached

Individual auction results cited by the buyer’s guide from 2025 and January 2026 are transactions, not a valuation index. Condition, specification, provenance, currency and sale terms vary, so do not convert one result into a current market price. Obtain the complete auction-house, date, currency, lot and result details before using any sale as a comparison, and date your notes because values are volatile.

The same caution applies to running-cost and mileage figures. The guide’s $5,000–$18,000 annual estimate and 1,000–4,000-mile collector-mileage range describe that publisher’s assumptions, not a measured population. Your budget should instead combine the inspection findings, local labor rates, transport and taxes, parts lead times and a reserve for unknown work.

Common buying mistakes and better decisions

Buying the paint before checking the shell

Fresh paint can hide corrosion or a poor repair. Insist on a lift inspection, photographs and access to seams, floors and mounting points.

Accepting a warm engine demonstration

Require a cold start and a hot restart. A car that starts only when pre-warmed has not passed the test.

Assuming a symptom names the failed part

Smoke, lost boost, hot-start trouble and uneven idle have multiple possible causes. Pay for diagnosis and measured tests before agreeing to a repair allowance.

Confusing a parts listing with available stock

Ask whether the exact component is physically available, what its lead time is and whether it is new, rebuilt or used. Keep written confirmation.

Using the wrong manual

Verify MR 221 edition, completeness and Turbo 2 applicability. A generic Renault 5 document may omit model-specific systems or specifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Letting rarity excuse missing records

Scarcity does not replace provenance. If identity, repairs or drivetrain changes cannot be documented, treat that uncertainty as a condition issue and negotiate—or walk away.

A practical go/no-go decision

  1. Proceed to specialist inspection only after the seller supplies identity documents and permits a cold start, lift inspection and sufficiently long road test.
  2. Pause and price the risk when findings are repairable but documentation, parts availability or structural history is incomplete. Obtain written estimates and delivery times.
  3. Walk away when identity is inconsistent, structural corrosion is concealed, the seller blocks independent inspection, or safety-critical faults cannot be diagnosed with available parts or expertise.
  4. Buy with confidence when provenance is coherent, the shell and chassis are sound, mechanical tests are documented, originality is understood, and a realistic parts and maintenance plan fits your budget.

A Renault 5 Turbo 2 can be an extraordinary collector car, but its purchase decision should look more like a documented engineering audit than a quick classic-car test drive. The winning example is not necessarily the most original-looking or the most expensive; it is the one whose identity, structure, mechanical condition, records and future support are all explainable.
